Re: TV: A Succession of Watchmen in The Good Place

I meant satellite radio. Which I love.

I was just making a joke that satellite isn’t real radio by way of a really bad cheese joke. It wasn’t my finest work.

Not every joke lands.

The pilot episode is free on YouTube thanks to CBS:

Seems to be the trend now, as NBC also released the pilot for Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist on YouTube as well. https://youtu.be/6IKGBlnu9YI

It removes some of the perceived risk of signing up for a new service when they can get a taste of the quality for free even before the free week of service on initial sign up. #marketing?

I've only seen the pilot but it was good. Patrick Stewart is a UNESCO World Heritage treasure.

The second episode is a bit slower obviously, but they are setting everything up great! And agreed on Patrick Stewart :)

It's about 50 times stranger / more impactful for me because he looks, sounds, and acts very much like my departed father, and he has those Montaigne depth that draw me in.

My god I would love to see Stewart do a series on Montaigne's essays. It's such a natural pairing. The man is the very essence of equanimity.

Blind Date is back on Bravo. The captioning is as funny as Pop Up Video. Also they appear to have decided to only have very pretty girls with big... personalities.

Huge...tracts of land?

The ending of The Good Place was appropriate and well done. I just ordered the book and I will report back in a few thousand Jeremy Bearemies.

Finished The Man in the High Castle last night. The last two episodes were amazing, but the ending seemed... flat. It was good still, but something was just ... off.

Have you read the book? Highly recommend (nothing like the series; they basically just used the title).

Re: TV: A Succession of Watchmen in The Good Place

I have not, but I do want to read it now.

It's wonderful but please treat them as completely separate stories. Only the premise is the same. The book doesn't care at all about the politics or the intrigue, it's Dick's typical philosophical stuff about mind and reality.

Added to my Amazon cart.

Speaking of MitHC, how has Rufus Sewell not won an Emmy or a Golden Globe yet? And how was his only nomination been for a one episode guest spot on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel? Watching him spiral on MitHC reminded me of Bryan Cranstons fall on Breaking Bad. You are rooting for him but then you remember that he chose to be a goddammed Nazi.

Sewell's new mini-series "Agatha Christie’s The Pale Horse" on Amazon looks to be good.

The ending reveal in E1 of McMillions?

Am also interesting in checking out The Pharmacist.

I enjoyed Ep 1 of McMillions, but it felt a little bit like a story that could be told over a couple of episodes as opposed to how long they made it. Did we really need to spend all of that time talking about what a backwater that particular FBI office is, or how the one young agent was so in love with the idea of going undercover? Not real sure how that adds to the ultimate story.

True enough. I suppose the theory is if the viewer is exposed to more backstory - especially of many of the characters involved - they'll be more vested in seeing how it all plays out. I wouldn't have minded if more ended up on the editing room floor.
