tUMD @ UW-M - Don't worry Badger fans, Crandall won't be playing...

Re: tUMD @ UW-M - Don't worry Badger fans, Crandall won't be playing...

I was wondering if that was you. Dude, lose the weird arch-back thing - you looked retarded. :D I enjoyed watching you guys bantering with the student section. Even got your very own a**hole cheer!
It is called Bernie! Badger fans jump around.

Hard to complain about the tie, but I think Bucky left a point out on the ice tonight.
Overall, I was pretty happy with it. With some crisper passing, they might have gotten through the UMD trap a little better, but overall they played very well against a very good team. I feel like they were a little stronger with the puck than they had been when they played Minnesota, and it showed with some of the chances they had coming out of the corners.

Not a big fan of the "make noise" graphics they decided to run this year - actually I think it's kind of embarrassing the even need something like that.
That and some of the canned music they've started to play here and there really is embarrassing. I get that the crowds are down this year, and the student section isn't going to be as engaged during finals week as they normally would, but we've still got (maybe) 10,000+ fans, Phil and a fantastic pep band. Those kind of cheap tricks shouldn't be necessary to keep the Kohl Center. Perhaps the sad truth is that, even though they weren't necessary four or five years ago, they might be now. Depressing.

Shepherd looks at play as Lamb bumps the UW player along the half boards. UW sees Shep watching play, performs Oswald dive, Shep calls penalty. Good call on Shep's helmet....what a metrosexual Daddy's boy.

My Doctor doesn't let me talk about Shepherd. Some crap about blood pressure and dyeing.

Re: tUMD @ UW-M - Don't worry Badger fans, Crandall won't be playing...

From a guy cheering for UW: Badgers lucky to get a point this weekend. Outplayed and outclassed this weekend. Both goals tonight were when UW was down; a 2 on a hipcheck shouldn't have been called but 15 seconds later when a guy didn't get up they made a phantom call. Then a 2 was turned into a 5. If tUMD doesn't come out flat early Friday they easily take 4.

I hope my boys take notice... This is a sweepable team on the road if you grind it out for a full 120.

Schools like piped in music because it gives them a level of general control over the response of the students. They play X and the student's do Y, they don't have to worry about the student's doing Z whenever they want. They want the students to just follow the herd and do as they are instructed.

As for the crowd size and energy, it is the inevitable result of a poor previous season, a terrible start, and a rose bowl bound football team.

As for this UW hockey team, this was statement weekend for the rest of the season. With UMD's help they made quite the statement, albeit a negative one.

I'm afraid you're 100% correct on this assessment.

Which is all fair and good, as you can only expect so much when the team isn't doing well. However, Prof. Leckrone gets paid for a reason. Why not let him do his job, instead of pre-empting him with canned music with an increasing frequency? The band produces better atmosphere than piped in music, and IMO provides more/better opportunities for crowd response.

As for the stuff that actually matters (what happens on the ice, as opposed to what I'm usually complaining about), I'm not positive that it was entirely a negative statement. While I couldn't see tonight's game, and the team has played inconsistently, I do think that they are playing better overall. The puck security seems to have improved as the year goes on, and I think the offensive is working a little more cohesively than the rag-tag efforts we saw earlier in the season.

That said, I do think that you're right in that going 0-1-1 doesn't help us get anywhere closer to home ice in the WCHA playoffs (at this point, it's the only thing we're playing for in the WCHA), nor does it help our abysmal RPI situation:
RPI: .4953
RPI (ranking): 34
W-L-T: 7-9-2
Win %: .4444
Win % (ranking): 38t
SOS: .5122
SOS (ranking): 23
We'd have to have our RPI jump a good .05 before we can sniff an at-large bid. Getting into the NCAAs will require a remarkable streak- one where we cannot afford to have any one-point weekends, even if it's against a team as good as the Bulldogs.

The "Make Noise" and "LOUDER" scoreboard instructions are a huge pet peeve of mine at all major sporting events. These instructions are usually given during timeouts or other lulls and contrary to the moment. Makes as much sense to instruct SIMMER DOWN NOW after a home team OT goal.

Dear Tyler Barnes,

Please stop yard sailing.

Sincerely,
A fan who challenges your respect for the nature of the game.

I'll take three points anytime. Hope we don't get soft over the break.

My personal highlight was the PigTen announcers complimenting Sandy on staying calm on Friday night. They thought a lot of coaches would become angered by some of the officiating, but not Sandy, he was calm as could be. That doesn't sound like any hockey coach, much less Sandelin. But, when they zoomed in on tUMD bench Sandy was asking Shep if his mom was a trucker. :p

I think an at-large bid is a million-to-one shot at this point. They'll need to win a large majority of the remaining games to make that happen.

Gotta agree with Euro - the Dogs were the better team this weekend, and by a substantial margin.

So your saying there is a chance??:)
