tUMD @ UNO: On Friday, Janurary 13th UMD will disappoint 16,000 Maverick Fans

Re: tUMD @ UNO: On Friday, Janurary 13th UMD will disappoint 16,000 Maverick Fans

I'm not going to wait til we hoist our trophies. Red Cows, you're an idiot. Instant gratification!

Many tUMD fans were WAY off about how this season was going to go. We knew we had some good returning players, but in addition to what AMSoil already said, we did not know that senior Scott Kishel would be playing at such a high level (he's not Faulk, but he has really blown us away with his improvement) and we didn't know that Casto would be such a talent.

Say what you want about the pre-season analysis, but tUMD is not the Wild.

I felt about the same as DHG at the beginning of the season, but my biggest area of concern, even bigger than the scoring we lost, was the consistency of Reiter. Obviously he was spectacular in the Tourney last year, but was inconsistent throughout the year and I wasn't sure he wouldn't go back to that come this season. Other than the first two weekends, he has looked great and our schedule sets us up very well for a run at the MacNaughton Cup. I don't see the Dogs going through any significant slump in the 2nd half.

Well, yes, but the 3667 people at Lawson are all yelling some form of the word "suck" simultaneously. It's the CCHA fan's favorite word.

It should be a great series if UNO can overcome its recent personnel adversity (loss of Hudson, injury of Sustr, Random Goalie of the Day (tm)).

But to tell a WCHA team that they're playing in a big barn where beer is served isn't exactly the most intimidating thing you can say, nor is it terribly novel. (Judging by their fans' Twitter feeds, UMD hockey players are in front of more drunk people at church in Duluth than they will be in Omaha. And I say that with all respect, having done a couple tours of duty with NMU's liver-blasting Puckheads.)

I'm glad UNO is at home for this series, as UNO plays well here. And UNO plays a better power play on paper than UMD plays a PK. Beyond that, you gotta like how tDogs are playing.

I cannot recall a time where a team said "we would have won that game if it wasn't for that crowd!" opposing teams fans can also feed visiting teams. I am not worried about the crowd on Friday.

True, but there is a reason why its called home field advantage and everybody wants it, no matter what the sport.

It does matter. We'll see if it does this weekend or not in this particular case. UNO crowds tend to sit on their hands for the first period or two too much, sometimes. One of the problems in the two previous "sell out" games, IMO, has been that there has been a sizable very casual hockey fan contingent at those games. Those folks aren't necessarily the most "passionate".

Lawson Arena seats 3667 people!!! That's a hostile crowd? Angry mob might be more like it. Multiply that number by 4 or so and add alcohol.

The Omaha Lancers (USHL) had more people than that at their game at the Omaha Civic Auditorium on Saturday night.

I don't think the two environment situations are very comparable.

I don't know if alcohol is served at Lawson but let me remind everyone that at one end of the Centurylink Center is the "Bud Bar" which is a big full service bar with a commanding view of the arena from that end. That said, I think the early start might temper the level of pregame "festivities" a bit.

Win or lose, the Friday night game will be an event. It will certainly help UMD if they can get the crowd out of the game, early on.

I've been to your arena for both series we've played there since you joined the WCHA. I'm guessing your WCHA road series attended so far equals SCSU's NCs. Omaha is not a hostile crowd, not even CLOSE. Mankato is a more hostile crowd. Its not about # of people in the building, its about noise, and smaller barns ENHANCE that... there's way more people at a Gopher home game than an SCSU home game, now ask a player which is a louder building.

And did I misread that... or did you say tUMD will be a team 4-6?!?

Should have put some quotes around hostile.:) All the chat in the series thread and on USCHO write-ups was that WMU was expecting sellouts and hostility with #1 coming into their building. I have no idea what it was like as I didn't see or hear about the games aside from the scores. My point was that tUMD seemed to handle what was supposed to be a "hostile" crowd at WMU(albeit a smaller crowd) so we'll see what happens against UNO in their "sellout" game this season. Obviously the crowd at UNO will be much much larger than WMU. :p

Nope, I think you're referring to my quoting tUMD Penalty Box earlier on.

Gotcha... Figured I missed something in there.

Re: tUMD @ UNO: On Friday, Janurary 13th UMD will disappoint 16,000 Maverick Fans

This is going to be a great series! UNO has a tendency to play to their competition. They tend to play great against the teams they shouldn't beat, and play like crap against teams they should beat. There will be alot of non-hockey people there Friday nite due to all the free tickets, so I really don't expect the crowd to be a factor except for the bathroom lines. I think a split will be the results of the weekend.

!!! I totally can!!! The stupid teddy bear game against Buttmidji where people kept whipping bears on the ice. That was at home though.

But, hockey isn't like the Metrodome, where Jared Allen tries to get everyone loud on 3rd down.

Re: tUMD @ UNO: On Friday, Janurary 13th UMD will disappoint 16,000 Maverick Fans

Yes the Bulldogs lost a lot of scoring from last year and yes we historically haven't been in the same recruiting stratosphere as some of the bigger names. What we have is something that other teams do not have. We have a group of very dedicated and focused players who believe in this team. In addition, I'm hearing something that I've seen no one else talk about. I've noticed and others have also noticed how our forward play has improved over the last couple of seasons. My belief and the belief of many insiders is this improved play at forward is the result of Derek Plante working with the forwards. He may not be the best recruiter but he is absolutely the best on-ice coach of forwards we've ever had IMO. If you don't believe me, ask the players. He is a big reason for us leading the country in scoring this year in spite of having lost a lot of scorers from last year's team.

Not really the thread for this, but I will say I agree 100% on the on ice coach part. He is fantastic, but, that said if he doesn't figure out how to recruit real soon, he will have to coach in the minors or USHL, because assistant coach's in college hockey have to be both coach's and recruiters. There is no way around this fact. He needs to find out how to walk in a Canadian/USA players living room, flash some Stanly cup/NHL Cred at them, and land a big time recruit. Otherwise he won't be on UMD's staff for long. Sandy isn't going to go out and hit the road recruiting, he has paid his dues with that.

Re: tUMD @ UNO: On Friday, Janurary 13th UMD will disappoint 16,000 Maverick Fans

The question is: "When does the streak end for tUMD?"

WMU was supposed to be a hostile, sellout environment to make it tough on tDogs. I only saw the scores, not the commentary but it appears tDogs weren't affected too much by the crowd at WMU. Will it be different at UNO this weekend with the predicted sellout? Hard to say. UNO is a decent, (currently)middle of the pack team that could surprise. Hard to say if tUMD will be affected by the crowd. Should be a fun series and I hope I can catch some of the game on TV Friday!

The one part about that is WMU only has 3500 seats, this is 17,000. But I'm sure there will be 2000+ no shows, and not to mention do they know how/win to get hostile for a hockey game? I can actually see the bulldogs winning friday, by being amped to let a crowd down, and then having the let down saturday. But then again, who knows with this sqaud.

Like I said, make sure you have a 3 goal lead in the 3rd if you want to win.

On the flip side, 3500 loud fans can do just as much damage in a small enclosed barn, i.e. WMU's barn, as a huge Xcel Center style 17,000 seat arena. I would argue more, as we used to out-do NoDak with the Old DECC vs The new ralph. Those fans on top of you does a lot more than you think. No to mention I bet the WMU fans are much more educated on hockey than the random 17,000 UNO fans who decided to buy tickets for the "event."

This one has actually crossed my mind. Same thing when the Fighting Sio....(oops) were here last year for the (very) first time last season. By the way, the place rocked for that (thanks, students) and it played out like a title fight in a wild game in front of over 11,000 (with easily 1000 or better of those in green).

I assume we're gonna see at least a fair amount of maroon and gold?

You'll see some. We don't travel that well.

EDIT: You will see a bunch of UMD fans. There is a bus full of old people coming from Duluth.

Wait, what are you doing in your own team's game thread? :p :p :p

I knew this would draw a response from you. I'm surprised it took so long. I'm going to agree and disagree with you. I agree that he needs to recruit. He does not, however, have to recruit in Canada to keep his job. He is focused on the Midwest and primarily Minnesota. Herter and Sandelin are the ones making the trips to Canada. He will also get a longer leash than most on the recruiting due to his work on the ice, which is critically important. Believe me, his work with the forwards and the vast improvements in our offensive game are being recognized by his boss. It is his work that has led to a lot of our success the past year and a half and a big reason why we lead the nation in goals per game.
