No, I have had a few other UMD gamers over the years and I actually won two in the recent auction. (At one point, my collection contained at least one game worn jersey of every current D-I men's hockey team, but I let a few slip away.) I could not believe the prices some of those UMD jerseys went for, especially the guys who didn't even play in that game.

The system UMD uses is not the greatest auction program in the world. The sort function does not really work and the front screen showing the jerseys available doesn't show the actual current highest bid. (You have to view each auction to see that amount.) I'm guessing someone has to update that manually and in the last day it was way too hectic to keep it accurate. I also learned the hard way that they amount you enter is the new bid, it is not a "proxy" format where your bid only increases as necessary (luckily another bidder solved that mistake for me by outbidding me). The auction stated that the "first" bid was $250, but it wouldn't accept anything under $274 for the opening bid.

Ehh, it's all water over the dam at this point. I was just glad I was able to get a couple. The Beavers rink opening jerseys were sold outright by the team for $500 a pop, so these were a bit more reasonable.

I've had a few other UMD jerseys over the years (even had a #29 before it was retired, but sadly not Brett's). All but one got traded away for something I wanted more and went to more deserving homes. I'm friends with a couple jersey collecting guys who bleed tMaroon and tGold. One guy alone has more than 50 UMD gamers and some of them are 20+ years old - sweet stuff! They have absorbed the majority of the jerseys I've let go. One deal even involved a case of hand-delivered beer to get it done! You do what it takes when you see something you can't live without.

I didn't even notice that until you mentioned it. I went back and looked at the email again, I know more than a couple of those email addresses.

Some of those guys are pretty private collectors. They fly below the radar - No web site, no webshots, no Flickr, no Facebook, etc. You won't see some of those jerseys again until the owner passes on to the next life. Lost to the sands of time...

Well I've never seen that variation (sounds like a good suggestion for a future MTU v NMU game to get the rivalry going again), however I have seen the guest of honor bounce the puck off the home captain's stick so hard that the visitor had to get the puck and push it back to the home captain so he could "win" the faceoff.

It is a really stupid format that lacked a lot of the features I expect from auctions. Mr. RWD, another bidder (who wanted your jersey) and I all were outbid at the last second, but the thing made it look like we won. I realized it in time and bid on another one (I had three tabs open for alternative jerseys), but Mr. RWD was not so lucky. tUMD isn't exactly technically advanced.

No thanks was my take on that auction. I want no part of a jersey that we worn once and lost 5-0 to UND. The only way I would have been talked into buying one of those is IF it said UMD or Bulldogs instead of Duluth. It's the University of Minnesota Duluth, or UMD, or I'll even let Minnesota-Duluth slide. But not Duluth. Duluth is what those arrogant a holes at minnesota call UMD when weakly masking an attempt to slight us.

NEAR HOUGHTON, MI -- Yooper Task Force reports have begun circulating that a UMD fan was found bound to a large tree in the middle of the woods this past weekend. The police are saying that the unnamed Bulldog was tied using carefully-braided locks of his own hair in conjunction with a specially-engineered roping material that Michigan Tech experts guess would have lasted a full 75 years without deteriorating. An American flag was draped about his shoulders.

Police hypothesize that the imprisonment was carried out by a band of rogue UP deer, sick of spending all their time running from people with guns. Michigan Tech students and faculty, however, suspect that one of the American flags flying proudly at their university may have ripped itself from the flag pole, disoriented the UMD student by flapping around in his face, then taken him hostage with its own bare grommets.

"American flags are, shockingly, quite sentient and aware of their surroundings," explained one history professor. "Usually they wiggle around in the wind, shine brightly, and do the whole I-Love-America deal. However, when provoked, they can be ferocious. Our best guess is that this Bulldogs fan must have done something pretty foolish to invoke the ire of our national symbol." What exactly that might have been, the professor noted, is something we will only learn with time. "Flags are a secretive species, and not eager to reveal their secret thoughts. We can only hope that someday this one tells us the truth about why it mounted this assault."

In wholly unrelated news, the John MacInnes Ice Arena has announced its intent to hire a standing army of 58 bouncers. A generous alumni donation to the school will be used to pay for their dark sunglasses, earpieces, and matching black jackets.

no (but I saw that too this morning). I think a "nerve" would be what was struck by having a group of fans screaming to drown out the national anthem being sung live by a senior citizens' choir. Curious... how do you celebrate Pearl Harbor Day, by egging the VFW Hall?
