tUMD and UMTC Home and Home: Winner will be decided in a dive off

Re: tUMD and UMTC Home and Home: Winner will be decided in a dive off

UMD fans are quickly getting to a Jan level for me as well. 50+ year old woman taunting us and a probably 40-something dude grabbing his crotch and telling me to "suck it"? Grow up. There was a few years ago where I deserved everything that came to me as an opposing fan, but we literally were minding our own business the whole game. We cheered about the good thing(s) that happened for the Gophers and we disagreed with the little girls laying on the ice and a couple goofy calls, but never got in any faces of fans or anything like that. UMD fans have always played the "we don't want you" game when Gopher fans cheered for them but I always had a little soft spot in my heart anyway. I know UMD fans still won't care but I always thought this used to be a fun rivalry, now it' seems like UMD fans are getting a little too big for the britches.

That's a disappointing to hear.

As being "too big for our britches"...what as you define it as? Is there a certain level of pride and expectation UMD fans should have? Anything above that is not good?

Lol. Can't imagine why any UMD fans would have a predisposition to dislike Gopher fans...

The way you guys view your little sister schools is patronizing. I'm surprised they take it as well as they do to be honest.

Now don't get me wrong here, I'm not suggesting that you should view them in any other way. I certainly wouldn't if in your shoes. Keep them down and in their place. Just don't expect their undying gratitude that you notice them from time to time.

As for the fan interaction, did you consider that maybe said fans are projecting onto you because of things that have happened in the past with other Gopher fans. Rivalries and "fan hatred" don't happen in a vacuum or overnight. Incidents in passing at an event didn't just happen in that instant - or at least they didn't come out of nowhere.

You said yourself - "There was a few years ago where I deserved everything that came to me as an opposing fan..."

I've no doubt.

I've mellowed a LOT in the past 10 years or so, but like you, there was a time a few years ago where I was right in the middle of it all.

I don't feel the need anymore coz age and wisdom have allowed me to be quietly self confident in the knowledge that we are simply better than all of you (regardless of game to game results or individual season's accomplishments). No need to point it out anymore.

That comment stems from ever since you guys won your title. I'm all for pride about your team and you guys swept the #1 team in the nation this weekend. It's a big feat and it's a big deal and UMD fans deserve(d) to celebrate, but why couldn't fans just enjoy it instead having to shove it in my face? My thing is I don't feel like I did anything to anybody to provoke these actions toward me(and I'm sure I have in the past as I said, but I didn't do anything this weekend). Like I said, this rivalry used to be fun and friendly for me, but I after this weekend.....not so much. I'm not generalizing all UMD fans, but it was a weird feeling being in Duluth this weekend after some very enjoyable trips up there in years past.

Lol. Any of the predisposition I do is done right here on a messageboard. The fans that "interacted" with me felt as if they just came out of the woodwork for "OMG ITS GOOOFER WEEKEND!!!11!!!!".

If some guy came up to me an said "Hey buddy, I saw you a couple years ago cocking off after you guys won up here so SUCK IT!" I'd probably say I had that one coming. I'd even give it a pass if it was some drunk kid from the student section but these were grown *** people who felt the need to go out of their way to taunt us thought we did nothing to them. No time for that.

Some guy at Old Chicago after the game just kept taunting non-stop and was clearly overserved. If I was thinking more clearly I probably would've brought it to the attn of the bartender and got him a kiddie cocktail.

For the most part, I don't mind the taunting. Primarily because it doesn't happen very often, so we are typically coming from the position of power. Yes I typically talk big and throw smack around when I can, but isn't that the whole point? I'm not typically an in your face type of fan and usually get left alone by opposing fans. Sure there are some morons that shout stuff, but not really directed at me but more into general space to see who reacts.

The only time it ever happened to me was a group of WI football fans got in my face at a game. That has completely defined my outlook of bucky fans so obviously they are all a bunch of jerks. Right Gurt? :D

I was pretty much left alone in Duluth so it didn't bother me. One or two guys were yelling as I was walking through canal park but that was no big deal. Maybe it was because I am just such an imposing figure in real life that these guys don't want to cross me. Yeah... that's got to be it. :)

I don't know, Badger fans have generally been nice to me.

:p:D

I've run into crappy/confrontational fans in Minnesota, Chicago and other places and have even been chirped here by a Packer fan once while wearing a Blackhawks hat - he wrongly assumed that I must be a Bear fan.

It's all good and I don't take it personally or get hurt by it nor does it change my opinion of fanbases or even the individual fans in question - unless it gets threatening or violent.

Even on here - we don't really know each other and trolling can be such fun at times. :)

This seems odd, I know, but you never hear about Sioux fans showing inappropriate behavior. It's a nice bunch of people who live up there.

Probably not worth writing about it because trolling them wouldn't be too effective since most can't read.

:D

Sorry but that one was set up perfectly and too easy not to take.

That's hockey for you. My guess is the people that rubbed it in were attending their first and only game of the year. As for being different since we won a title...it's changed the mindset but it's hard me to describe how. My best guess is think about how annoying a fanbase must be if they had one 5, 6 or 7 titles :D I'd get over that one.

I think fanbases get increasingly intolerable until they peak at 5, then they start to mellow until they are quite delightful people by the time they hit 7. The cycle must begin again somehow, because 9 doesn't appear to be a healthy number.

Some fanbases even nearly disappear when they hit 7. It's almost reason enough to cheer for UMTC to win back to back.

+1, and I concur.

I have has plenty of unprovoked interactions with ******** gopher fans at and near the mooch. Some jib jab about tArrogance.

It sounds like you don't enjoy the rivalry now that you guys are loosing all the time. That is kinda normal. :)

This grammar hurts my head. The spelling doesn't help, either.

I'm sorry to hear that.

No.

Never happened, fans at Mariucci would never provoke opposing fans or get into a heated argument, we are peaceful folk who enjoy a good nap.
