Tuesday January 8th score updates: Norwich/Middlebury the 145th meeting of The Game

Re: Tuesday January 8th score updates: Norwich/Middlebury the 145th meeting of The Ga

He looked good for a rookie

I assumed so from the box score. That's one positive Geneseo can take away from the game.
It looks like Rich Manley didn't play either.

Norwich is now 9-2-1 in its last 12 games vs. Middlebury.

The Norwich senior class is 5-0-1 against the Panthers, including two shut out victories.

So it sounds like Haude was hit by an Adrian player on a partial breakaway. I assume it wasn't intentional, but I hope the injury's not bad.

What is up with Middlebury's goaltending??? Liam Moorfield-Yee is getting most of the starts as of late and has yet to win a game (0-4-0). Is Nick BonDurant injured? His (5- 1- 2) suggests he is the Panthers best option between the pipes.

Despite his 0-4 record, he has played well in net and the responsibility for the losses are more due to the lack of offense than anything. He is the best option.

I thought Yee played very well yesterday for Midd.

Moorfield-Yee's stats look to be a bit better than BonDurant's but the real issue is that Middlebury hasn't scored many goals during the current slump . .

Goalie W/L records are about as meaningful as W/L records for pitchers

Felix Hernandez had 13 wins for Seattle least year and Jason Vargas had 14. Which one of those two do you want starting a game for you?

Re: Tuesday January 8th score updates: Norwich/Middlebury the 145th meeting of The Ga

Yee's problem is not so much with his offense but with his D-men who are not clearing players out of the crease. Two of the Norwich goals were tap-ins from the doorstep by guys who should never have been allowed to be there. In addition to that, they did not seem to be able to cope with Norwich's speed. Yee is very, very quick with excellent lateral movement and will be tough to beat.

Any hockey guy will tell you the goalie's Save Percentage is the true measuring stick. I've seen goalies who stand on their head and make 45 saves, but let 4 in every night. THose types will never win the Goals Against Average title, but are sometimes more talented than the guy who makes 18 saves a night and lets in 2. Often times, the guy who plays on a bad junior team, or prep team, can not adjust to playing for a real good college team where he see's only a fraction of the shots.

Poor Mr. Katz just plays on a HORRIFIC team !!! I like the fact that the coach said he doesn't give up many rebounds !!!

I'm sure there are many DIII teams that would like to have him in goal for them

Re: Tuesday January 8th score updates: Norwich/Middlebury the 145th meeting of The Ga

I thoroughly enjoyed the Midd-Norwich game on Tuesday. There was lot of good hockey played on both sides. Norwich has better players than Midd, and I'd hate to see them when they are really clicking. I was impressed by the effort from the Panthers. This year's version seems to be much more willing to work hard. They have a ways to go, but they could end up being a very good team by the end of the year and challenge for a NESCAC title. But they're not there yet.
I did find the atmosphere quite bland however. Time may have distorted my memories, but I remember these games as being much more physical on the ice and much more verbal in the stands. There doesn't seem to be the passion on either side. The was a good crowd, particularly for a Tuesday night, good student presence by the second period, and the Norwich faithful travel quite well. I think the environment contribuets to the subdued atmosphere. The Chip Kenyon arena, while an amazing facility, is a rather sterile place and is very well sound proofed. Aren't hockey rinks supposed to be noisy? While I'm happy not to be freezing my *** off, there was something more intimate about the cold, gloomy, old Duke Nelson area. And that old horse barn at Norwich was like playing hockey in someone's flooded basement with half the lights off. Those places got the juices going more than today's McShane and Beaney ice palaces. It's a different time and hockey is in a different place than it was back then, but I'd like to see everyone to have a more energizing experience at the game. Maybe if the Panthers had been able to tie it up late and send it to OT it would have gotten more raucous.

Re: Tuesday January 8th score updates: Norwich/Middlebury the 145th meeting of The Ga

maybe Midd could install St. Louis as a permanent referee- that would turn up the volume.

I've been to some NU/Midd games at Chip Kenyon where it got really raucous. This year's edition didn't seem to have the same kind of buzz going in, and the home crowd didn't seem to get into the game the way they have in the past.

The Governor needs to get involved with some sort of revolving trophy among the D-III hockey schools.

Trouble with that idea is can Middlebury clear room in the schedule to play Castleton (and St. Mikes?)?

Re: Tuesday January 8th score updates: Norwich/Middlebury the 145th meeting of The Ga

The atmosphere at the Kenyon has definitely changed over the last few years. It's sad that so many fans will only support a winning team. The average attendance
has dropped by maybe 7-800. The biggest difference in the noise level is the lack of student support, though. In days gone by there always seemed to be one student who would take a leadership role, and get the students fired up. Now that the leadership has been absent for four years, the cheers have been lost. I really miss the old standards; " There's only one Middlebury"," Tiny Bubbles", " Warm up the bus", and even the" Middlebury Cheer" that was evident after every Panther goal has faded into oblivion....
Sadly Middlebury is becoming a bouncy ball crazy campus, and hockey is falling by the wayside.
