Re: TRP: Will Wh*re for Pancakes

Someone please invent a time machine so Brent can go back to 1953 where he belongs.

I don't want to pay $80/mo or whatever for a handheld computer with a 4 square inch screen. What's wrong with that? I have a laptop, so I could theoretically get the 'net wherever I go, whenever I want. And it's about $80/mo for that. See a difference there?

Now, if I were in the sort of profession where it's needed, fine. Dandy. Awesome. But I'm not. And it's becoming tougher and tougher to just get a *ing phone. It's bullsh*. And as for the apps: gee, can I pay a couple bucks so my phone sounds like a light saber, or talks to me in a celebrity voice, or notifies me when I approach a McDonald's that serves the McRib? Ooooo can I can I? * that *.

Goddam sheep. That's all you *ers are.

Re: TRP: Will Wh*re for Pancakes

Seriously brent. It is way to handy to have everything that this thing does in my pocket. And why would you want to carry an entire laptop everywhere?

I don't. And you know why? Because I don't want to carry a computer wherever I go. Just like these smartphones. I don't want to pay an extra $20-40 to have an option I'll never use, and don't want to use.

Re: TRP: Will Wh*re for Pancakes

I have to agree with Brent... I just want a phone that can do calls, texts, and have an alarm wake me up the next morning... I could really live without many of the apps out there... I can live without the internet for a few hours at a time... Sure, there is convenience in having the web all the time... The only times that I really felt I needed the net however, are both related to baseball umpiring... It's nice to have access to a current radar and a GPS app for finding fields for the first time... Those are the only occurrences in the past year or so where I really felt disadvantaged by not having a smart phone... I've never felt compelled to have one at any other times really...

The other thing that keeps me away from a smart phone is their durability... I am rough on my phone...I'm outdoors well over 100 days/year fishing, snowboarding, hiking, ect... My phones are constantly exposed to moisture, dirt/dust, and will regularly take shots...I've had 3 phones since starting college in 2003... Only one was replaced due to breakage... I know people that go through 2-3 phones in a year... I just don't trust the new technologies to stand up to the abuse I put my phones through... My current Motorola has been "riced" 3 times already... The sides are beaten and marked up... But it keeps ticking... Can I put a Blackberry or IPhone through that?

Best phone I ever had was a Motorola. That thing was a beast, until they discontinued it and then my battery died (and no replacement was to be found). I beat the * out of it, had all the "features" I wanted, including a signal that would withstand a lead bomb shelter. I miss that phone. :(

I'm an IT guy, and I actually agree with Brent. Until work forces me (if ever), there are certain places where I want to be off the grid.

Re: TRP: Will Wh*re for Pancakes

Ironically, technology has gotten us to the point where phones are great at everything except - wait for it - calls.

This is actually good because I'd rather text anyway - it's more convenient for everyone involved.

As for smart phones, I have no need for them unless I decide at some point I want continuous and costly access to the 'net. Right now, I have no need for that, so I'm not going to add $60-80 per month to my budget.

Re: TRP: Will Wh*re for Pancakes

And now that I think about this, I am kinda curious what is out there without a camera in it... All the lawyers that I saw over my past few visits to traffic court had phones... The Will County Courthouse doesn't allow anything with a camera or recording device inside the building however... Just kind of a random thought since I was told by some kid salesmen at the cell phone place "everything that we (Cingular at the time) offer has a camera now" when shopping for my current phone....

Re: TRP: Will Wh*re for Pancakes

Quiz's dad threw me on their family and friends plan, so now I'm saving even more money. It was a wise decision, IMO. The iPhone? He had it for free from his company.

Re: TRP: Will Wh*re for Pancakes

****ing hippie.

This.

Someone please invent a time machine so Brent can go back to 1953 where he belongs.

And M*ing THIS!

I have a job and being able to e-mail whenever, wherever is part of that job. I also manage my kid's hockey and soccer teams and having e-mail in my pocket wherever I am helps those mightily. Other than that I don't need many apps, but some are cool.

Re: TRP: Will Wh*re for Pancakes

But for conveying a brief message (* Hockey, Meet Here, etc), especially at someplace like the F4, texting is great and very useful.
What do you care? You never go to the dam n thing unless it's in your backyard anyway. :p

My Blackberry was very rugged, surprisingly. I dropped that thing and used it on the farm where it saw everything from dirt/dust and manure to oil/greese and fuel. Never had a problem with its durability. Jury is still out on the Droid, I haven't had it long enough, or put it through enough to say that it is durable.

They have OFF buttons...

The ones that suck at calls are iphones, if you get a smartphone from a company that actually makes phones, like motorola, then it works great as a phone. My blackberry was also very good at plain old calls.

What I like to use it for is: checking sports scores no matter where I am, changing fantasy rosters, checking the weather, checking traffic conditions to see which route to take, searching for nearby restaurants when I'm in a new place, checking flight statuses on the go, listening to music (streaming or mp3) when I'm at work, unit conversions in the palm of my hand, flashlight, turn by turn navigation.

Re: TRP: Will Wh*re for Pancakes

I love my smart phone/internet in my pocket. I was a "my phone calls and texts" person until my power went out in July and the bf could play on the internet via his phone and check things like weather report. I was jealous, and it was time for a new phone anyway.

I have an LG Ally, half of that decision was that it is good for making phone calls, my primary use. Another big part of the decision is that it has a physical keyboard.

I use my internet in a pocket to pass time while waiting for things, check e-mail as soon as I get it, and look up opposing hockey team roster's so I can yell at them. And to check scores.

That was the best thing he could come up with to do during a blackout? WEAK. :p
