TRP: Summer, come now!

Re: TRP: Summer, come now!

1. I did not know that.

Once when I was a kid, I had my feet dangling over the dock at a friend's house. Pumpkinseeds and bluegills would repeatedly come up and try to take tiny bites out of our toes. I agree, they're unbelievably dumb. I've heard that you can occasionally catch them without bait - just hooks painted metallic gold.

Re: TRP: Summer, come now!

Sunfish/pumpkinseeds/bluegills will nibble most things that look smaller than them; even human toes.

Of course, they're a pain in the arse to fillet. We had a rule that we had to catch at least a half-dozen decent-sized ones before dad would break out the fillet knife, but we almost always wound up with enough to make a batch of fish chowder/"chowdah" every October or November.

They're a great "instant gratification" fish for young ones, or older ones with incredibly short attention spans. Case in point--my dad at the front of the boat trying to catch a record breaking bass, me in the back of the boat using half the worms on bluegills.

Re: TRP: Summer, come now!

Well, I'm on vacation up at Lake of the Woods, Ontario. It's been an amazing week of fishing, 11 muskies boated in 3.5 days. I caught the biggest one of my life today at 1pm. 51" ~38#

Awesome! That would be one hell of a vacation! I've always wanted to go to the Lake of the Woods and the Northwest Angle.

Re: TRP: Summer, come now!

I have fished, but not in a while. I just don't really enjoy it. Deer hunting on the other hand, is an annual event. I love killing those ****ers.

Re: TRP: Summer, come now!

I have fished, and do fish, badly, but I do it. I never did hunt. I took firearm safety training and know how to shoot, but never had anyone to go with. My son really, really wants to hunt and he has his friearm safety certificate as well. A buddy of ours who is Mr. Outdoors is talking about taking him deer hunting this fall. Hope it works out.

Re: TRP: Summer, come now!

Fished in my childhood, but haven't done it for a while. I enjoy doing it, but I am rarely at a lake to do so.

Never hunted and most likely never will.

Re: TRP: Summer, come now!

I've been hunting one time, so I could say that I've had the experience. Best nap of my life. It's not for me, but I will defend those who do participate (properly, legally, and safely) 110%.
I love fishing, but don't get out to do it often. I'm also the woman whose family hosts a bass tournament every year and won said tournament as an 8 year old. Like I mentioned before, while it's fun to seek out and land the trophy fish, I'm usually the one wasting all the bait on panfish.

Honestly, hunting is fishing was how my family gets 60% of our meat we eat. My mom never buys beef--we use venison instead. If one of us hunts/catches it, it will be eaten, and what we can't eat/freeze at home, we pass along to relatives or it was sent back to Marquette/Allendale with me/my sister. Between that and having a garden, it's pretty much how my parents managed to stay off of public assistance when they first got married. (And, yes, before the political debate fires up, I realize how freaking lucky they were to have that option and that not everyone can do something like that.) Redneck? Probably. Do I care? Not in the least.

Re: TRP: Summer, come now!

Never been hunting, but went fishing as a kid haven't done it in a while though. Never learned how to use a spinner rod either, for some reason.

Hopefully it works out that he can go. If he enjoys it, hunting will be something that he'll be able to enjoy for the rest of his life. And it really can be quite rewarding, there isn't anything quite like bagging a big buck, and in Shirtless's case, I'm sure the same goes for the big fish that he chases.

It'll likely depend on his hockey schedule as much as anything. The buddy's brother has a hunting "cabin" on about 40 acres in 'Sconny with lots of deer on it or moving through it. It's about as easy a hunting situation as one can get. He just needs a 'Sconny license and an open weekend when my buddy is going to be up there. I should take him to the range to shoot some more as he's not a very good shot yet.

Re: TRP: Summer, come now!

I hunted as a teenager (mostly whitetail, some turkey), but have since lost interest. Part of that has to do with seeing far fewer deer on my family's property after I was about 15, due mainly to the unlimited OTC doe licenses the DNR handed out for a period of years because of the bovine TB outbreak. They finally quit doing that, but not before the local population was slightly overharvested, which combined with winterkill to significantly impact the local population for a number of years.

The other part, is that getting up at 5 AM sort of lost its appeal during my undergrad years. :p

I really think the best part of bagging the big buck on my wall or that musky yesterday is that I got to do it with my dad. I think his smile both times was bigger than mine :)
