Re: TRP: Summer, come now!

I saw an interesting altercation this weekend at the Knoxville Nationals sprint car race, and just wanted to see what y'all felt about this since most of us need to watch sports on bench style seats at some point...

At the Knoxville Raceway, the seating in the stands is on benches with everything being reserved seating... My group of 3 had seats 21, 22, 23 in Row 24... In seats 15, 16, 17, and 18 were four, um, rather large people... They arrived at the seats before we did... When we walked up, we sat in our seats... At the time, we hadn't noticed that the larger people were actually in seats 15-18, but were occupying the space for 15-20... Every seat for this race in about Row 10 or higher is sold... Well, just as the opening ceremonies are wrapping up, and the E-main is about to be pushed off, here come the people that own seats 19 & 20... The entire row, both to the right and left, is solid people...

At first, these two are kinda confused, thinking they have the wrong row or section... Then one of them asks my friend Kevin what seats we had... He tells them... So the guy then turns to the large guy who is sitting in 19/20, next to Kevin, and asks him to move since it's not his seat... Big Guy #1 claims that it indeed is his seat... The other guy refutes that and says that he and his buddy have 19 & 20... Large guy basically tells him that he is S.O.L. since the row is solid people and that there is not enough room... So the other guy that just walked up just yells down the row that we need to open up two seats... Everyone just kinda snickers and says that we're in there solid... Guy in 13 or 14 says that he has 13 or 14 and that is where he is, so he ain't moving...

At this point, pretty much everyone not directly involved realized that the 4 large people were taking up 6 seats and felt awkward... We couldn't move from the seats we had, and the row to the left of us was solid to the end of the row... Big Guy throws in another comment about how the row is solid, so these guys are S.O.L. At this point, the guy that owned seat 20 made a comment about the group of larger people under his breath... Right after making this comment, his buddy grabbed him, and they went down to the base of the stands and spoke with an usher... At this point, the usher came up about 1/2 way up the stands, looked at our row, said something to the two guys, and they then went below the stands, never to be seen again...

I would assume that the two guys got their seats moved, but I really don't know... But this was awkward to be on the outside of this mess... Everyone knew the problem, but didn't really want to say anything... My group didn't want to give up our seats obviously, but we all sympathized with the other guys... I even felt sorta bad for the larger people, but at the same time, you have to realize that bench seating is going to be tight... The one big guy had a "Too F*ing Bad" attitude about the deal, despite knowing that he was taking up 1.5 seats...

Just a really awkward deal to be around...

Re: TRP: Summer, come now!

You should have to pay for the # of seats you take up. 1.5? Too f*king bad. Eat less or pay more. I have zero sympathy for the big guys. They should have to pay for 1.5 seats.

Re: TRP: Summer, come now!

It's a fine line you're dancing on here. Say something and you're liable to face a discrimination suit, but there has to be an element of common farking sense, too. Perhaps a disclaimer when you're purchasing tickets, saying that this ticket guarantees you a space of X inches on the bench. Beyond that, you have to pay the additional seat charge.

But isn't that the definition of a bench seat? You have halfway between the seat number to your right and the seat number to your left. Anything more and you're now preventing another customer from sitting in their seat.

I've said the same thing about airplane passengers. We should all have to get on a scale with our bags before the flight and we pay per mile per pound. I'm not exactly a bean pole so it's not like I'm trying to take advantage of the system.

It is, but anymore unless you make a specific qualification, assumptions like what Raceboarder saw today happen.

Re: TRP: Summer, come now!

Ive seen the same problem at Lambeau field during Packer games luckily I havent had any abnormally large people in my row. I agree with dx in that you should have to pay for the amount of space you take up but the problem at Lambeau is a later november/december game where Im going to take up more space with winter clothes but Im sure as hell not paying for more space

Re: TRP: Summer, come now!

Seems summer is just about done (re: title of thread). Sure, we'll have an Indian Summer stretch (wait, is that PC? No? Good.) but for the most part, no more 90s, 80s are waning, and 60s/70s are becoming the norm.

And the best part? Crisp fall nights. Spring has similar temps, but it's a whole different feeling. Methinks I need to find a campfire, a cigar, and a beverage of choice in the coming weeks.

This is not surprising at all. Softball post right here!

Also: fall means hockey season is coming!

Re: TRP: Summer, come now!

I was contacted today via email and asked to interview for a job in NYC. I've been at my current job for a little over two months and I have nine months left on my lease, the timing sucks.
