TRP: Hail Marys And False Hopes

Re: TRP: Hail Marys And False Hopes

I just threw some dirt on it and walked off the pain. I'm a trooper. :D
That always works. Dirt does a good job of stopping bleeding.

I once saw my grandpa cut his hand with piece of glass he was carrying, down to the bone, there was no way he was going to stop working, much less go to the hospital, so he wrapped it in a dirty, oily rag he found on the floor of his truck, and then wrapped some duct tape over that. He worked the rest of the day, then we went home and my grandma got a little mad at him.:p

Gotta love the old-schoolers. :D

Re: TRP: Hail Marys And False Hopes

The police in Switzerland carry stop signs when attempting to chase down a fleeing driver?

Re: TRP: Hail Marys And False Hopes

In case you haven't noticed, they are not a confrontational people. :p
Seriously, I'm picturing one guy driving the police car down the autobahn at 100 MPH while the other guy's hanging out the window, waving a stop sign like the ones the crossing guards use to shuttle children to school.

Re: TRP: Hail Marys And False Hopes

If I ever am rich enough so the offenses wouldn't really cost me, I have a new goal. I wanna top this stat:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091020/ap_on_fe_st/eu_switzerland_reckless_driving

My little brother fell short. Only 8 offenses in 2 minutes, though the ratio of offenses to minutes was better:

* Speeding (10-20mph over the limit)
* Running a red light
* Running a stop sign
* Wrong way on a one-way
* Tail light out
* Open container
* Not-a-drop (he was 19)
* No seat belt

Trying to evade police in Madison, WI. For some reason, they didn't give him a breathalyzer after he admitted to drinking. Probably because they already had him for $2,000+ in fines.

Well, it's obvious where he gets his lack of smarts......just sayin'.......

Yeah, the problem was that I never beat the living ***** out of him when we were young. I beat him, all right, but never a respect-my-authority type beating. Thus his disdain for authority.

He has mellowed out, however. I say he already has his smarts by avoiding the full wrath of a Plante26 beatdown.:D

I went the non-violent route with my bro. Sure there were confrontations (think there weren't? :D ) but I showed him how to "work the system," and he's done just fine. One of his most embarassing slipups? Getting caught for speeding (was doing 70 in a 55) on consecutive Thanksgivings at the exact same spot on the highway. :eek: Thankfully, I was with him both times. Why?

First time, he tried lying badly, and said he was doing the limit. It was all I could do to not smack him over the head. Got a big ticket for that one (though he avoided the reckless driving charge). I told him what he did wrong.

Second time? He admitted to doing about 63 or so, since there was no way he was getting out of a ticket, and got a small ticket plus a no-charge fixit ticket/warning for his speedometer. :)

My way out: Take the ticket and request a jury trial. No prosecutor wants to pay for 10-12 people to sit and listen to arguments about a $200 speeding ticket. I've plead down several tickets from LOTS of money (and a license suspension for a 30-40 over the limit) to next to nothing or deferred prosecution. Tricks of the trade from a seasoned vet. :D

Yeah, there's that route, which he should have done on the first one. But with that second one, I bet the jury would have made an example of him (assuming the cop showed up, which I think he would have). The second one was small enough to not even bother fighting.

Other tips I've learned from my uncle (who's a sergeant in Olmstead County, cop for prob about 30 years or so; even was on the front lines of the Hormel strike back in the 80's) is that when pulled over, rest your hands on the steering wheel, wrist over wrist.

Most cops recognize that is a sign that you are not going to go for anything (like a weapon, etc) and you won't be causing trouble.

Also, little things like putting your hazards on, leaving your headlights on (at night/bad weather), and saying "sir" or "officer" when finishing a statement/question. Simple things that go a long way.

Re: TRP: Hail Marys And False Hopes

I've actually been in a car on two occasions where sheriff's officers have pulled the vehicle over for having a tail light out, both times the my friend who was driving asked the officer if he could go back and take a look at it with him. It was late night both times. And both times the officer said no because he wouldn't be giving him a ticket just wanted to make him aware of it. Both times, there was nothing wrong with the tail lights.

From what I've understood, it's one way of a police officer being able to pull someone over to see if they are drunk without much cause. Unfortunately for the officers that did pull my friend over, he did lodge a complaint to the sheriff's office, and both times the officers were instructed to write and hand deliver written apologies for wasting my friend's time. Boy, that was awkward, but awesome to watch.

Bolded part is truth. They used to do random checkpoints for drunks (especially after concerts and such), but that was unconstitutional, so then they pulled over people for any violation. One of the more common ones was "obsctructed windshield" violations. Those air fresheners hanging from your rearview mirror? Stickers on the windshield? Technically illegal (at least for MN law). And most people don't signal lane changes around here, which is also one of the more common reasons to pull someone over when you want to do a "legal checkpoint" sting.

I'm all for it, actually, even though it might be a PITA for me. I don't want drunks on the road.

Quiz got a ticket for the stuff hanging from her rearview mirror in Iowa. She got pulled over for 7 over, and in addition to that ticket, got a ticket for obstructed view. We asked a few cops in Colorado what their take on it is...and they said yes, it is technically illegal, however, like the seat belt law, they can't pull you over for just that. They will not give you the ticket for obstructed view unless you mouth off though. In Quiz's case, it was a rookie cop (we still had the info and the Lone Tree PD dug up his stuff. Fresh out of the military and 1st year on the job.)

Re: TRP: Hail Marys And False Hopes

Ugh. Couldn't sleep last night for no apparent reason, couldn't get up this morning as a result.

In Minnesota the seat belt is now a primary offense so they can pull you over for it...
