TRP: Hail Marys And False Hopes

Re: TRP: Hail Marys And False Hopes

I actually could deal with the West Virginia thing better than the eastern Virginia/east coast. I get along great with rednecks and hillbillys.

Brother, you ain't seen a real hillbilly like the hillbillies they've got in West Virginia.

Re: TRP: Hail Marys And False Hopes

I *ing hate the half hour before interviews with a passion

Note to self: also not a great idea to down a travel-size cup of Mountain Dew an hour before an interview.

I just wish I could get an interview. I am trained in nothing, and everything wants 2 **** years of experience. I am effed.

Heh, I keep seeing ads for US Army Bandsmen wanted on Careerbuilder. Maybe you have a future there? ;)

Re: TRP: Hail Marys And False Hopes

I work in Minneapolis...though the company is based in Indiana.

Virginia, huh. I don't think I'd like living in Virginia, but then, I wouldn't like living anywhere that doesn't lie somewhere between Lake Michigan and the Rocky Mountains.
Western Virginia is very pretty, but the whole state is too dang humid.

Sloe - You can feed far more people per acre with plants than with any animal, be it cattle, hogs, chickens, etc, for a very simple reason. Animals eat plants, and there is loss in the conversion of plant mass to animal mass. Therefore, raising plants is more efficient. This is a very well established and widely recognized fact, even among beef/hog/chicken researchers. That being said, I enjoyed my steak Monday night and my chicken last night.

I pulled up to a Walmart in Arkansas a few years ago, and saw a family that was stereotypical hillbilly. Mom and dad were missing a few teeth, the kids weren't wearing shoes, all the males were dressed in overalls w/o shirts. They could have walked right out of a movie set!

I have been seriously considering enlisting with the Navy or Navy Reserve and go with music there.

Or, I could buck up, practice, and get good enough to be accepted to a school of music.

Both options don't appeal to me, even though I know either puts my future in a much better place than it is now. Stupid having to work for success. This blows. :D

Become a bartender. Seems like sound advice to me.:p

I wouldn't mind tending bar, but I don't think my company will let me take on another evening/weekend job, since I'm salaried. It is in the code of conduct.

If you've got a college degree, talk to Spherion or a similar type of company. They'll at least get you some temp gigs. I got laid off during the 2003 recession, and that's how I ended up with my company (temped for another temp agency which my employer has disavowed as being too expensive). Now I'm a business analyst supporting the department for which I temped, working on yet another multi-million dollar project. A lot of people get picked up full-time after a few temp gigs. And you don't necessarily need a degree in business to get a start with a financial company. In fact, the guy who manages the production managers likes to boast (or he did until he realized that it was keeping him back by being an *) that he has a psych degree and he manages people who went to school for the stuff we do.
I've been on both sides. It's more fun to be the guy sitting there going "hehehehehehe, I wonder if he's nervous!" :D
I hate being the one giving the interview. My manager has every prospective new employee get interviewed by my entire dept. We're looking for a few things from that, including whether or not we could tolerate the person's personality. I hate wading through the BS to every answer we give. We usually hire on Ops Analysts (entry-level analysts) and therefore it's usually production staffers looking for a promotion. They realize once we start asking some rudimentary questions about our job that they're outclassed, and start talking like they're writing an English paper. Those are the ones that lose right away, but then there are others who do put on a good show, and you get suckered in. It's happened to us once in the last two years. He now agrees that a potato is a vegetable.

Re: TRP: Hail Marys And False Hopes

I actually had a girl tell me that we meat eaters were to blame for the hole in the ozone because if we didn't eat cows they wouldn't need to breed so much of them and their methane producing gas. She said we should all be vegetarians because it would stop global warming and save the planet. She then asked how I was saving the planet. My response...

*holding up my bacon cheeseburger*

"I'm eating the ****ing cow. They can't produce methane when they're in a patty." :D

It's a shame that she was serious...she was cute.

Yes, the fact she was a vegetarian was the reason nothing happened between you two. :D

Re: TRP: Hail Marys And False Hopes

Well, the week is over half-over, and I can still walk. Sorta. :(

I fear what my back is gonna feel like after Friday.
