Re: TRP: Hail Marys And False Hopes

I'm not really sure....I'm guessing a few hundred dollars...I can come up with it to lend it...

Re: TRP: Hail Marys And False Hopes

I'm sorry, but in my mind for that you've got to know the person pretty **** well. This is the kind of thing that friendships/relationships/family ties get strained and ruined.

It's a matter of comfort for you.

A few hundred? Well, even for my best friends, they had better need it bad (not like for a concert or vacation or something) and I'd still be cautious about it.

That amount of money is what sometimes messes up friendships.

I don't want to say who it is...bottom line is I feel really bad and want to help out...knowing that I will not get the money back anytime soon is not a problem

creditors are knocking on the door for him...

Re: TRP: Hail Marys And False Hopes

Who it is, is strictly between you and that person. That's a question you've got to ask (and answer) for yourself. And judging by that response, it sounds like you already have.

Re: TRP: Hail Marys And False Hopes

If the creditors are calling, is a couple hundred bucks going to solve a problem, or just band-aid it until next month? If the money is truly going to help, and you can afford it, then I would highly consider it. Money sitting in my bank account is better spent to help someone else if I can, and it really is going to help.

That said, and as was mentioned, you need to consider what happens if you don't get the money back. If it has the potential to strain the relationship, maybe you should think twice? The persons character and integrity will probably tell you all you need to know in making the decision.

Re: TRP: Hail Marys And False Hopes

serious question for everyone...when do you lend someone money?

what if you're not sure you'll get it back...

Speaking from experience, only provide the cash if you're ready and willing to lose it with no hard feelings. That last part can be harder than it sounds. We've done it before, with mixed results. The last time I did it (last year), my friend had been out of work and needed to move. We gave him $200 or so, and so he wouldn't stress out about it, we just said to pay us back if/when he could. We had lent him money before, and it had been paid back very slowly. The guy was screwed, though, and is a good friend. I told my wife we'd never see the money, and we both agreed it was the right thing to do. I still think it was, but when the tax return came in and he bought a big screen TV with no mention of the $, it kinda rubbed me the wrong way. I got over it, though, because from the beginning I was more or less considering it a gift.

Markt beat me to it. Consider it a gift, already spent, gone - if it comes back, awesome.

If you can't do that, don't lend it. Also, if he can't pay it back the first time, there shouldn't be a second time.

Re: TRP: Hail Marys And False Hopes

Just joined Netflix. Rip me, fine. I wanted to get an uploading DVD player (and CC) before I joined, hence the long wait. But I said fuggit, and plunged.

This should be interesting. :o

I just had to find a place to post this:

Yes, that's "Macho Man" Randy Savage dropping the flying elbow out of one of the Twin Towers. :D

Who and how much are the big questions. I'll echo what Markt said with consider it a gift.

If your friend is having problems with creditors...it's probably a big hole to climb out of and you may not see your money back ever, and probably not soon.

Good luck making a decision you feel comfortable with.

Re: TRP: Hail Marys And False Hopes

well, I found out he needs nearly 10K to help him out...so a few hundred dollars would be thrown away. So my decision was pretty easy. Sucks to see someone in this situation, but nothing I can do.

I get the jitters any time I fall below a certain large number in the black (which I will with the next rent payment until my first check kicks over)... I really don't understand how people end up so far in the red... on the other hand I suppose I'm homebuying age now so that's one way.

Yeah, you really can't truly help him at this point.

As for the situation with Markt, what his friend did was a no-no. That loan payback should have come before a TV, of all things. I'd understand if the guy used his refund for bills or whatnot, but not something like that. That would do a little more than rub me the wrong way.

I'm always in the red, just due to student loans. It also doesn't help that I bought a $45000 truck. I just always make sure that I can afford to make my payments each month. My 2 checking accounts usually don't have a very big balance, because I siphon off as much as possible for 401k and employee stock purchase plan, and whenever I get above a certain amount I transfer some into a money market savings account, though I haven't had to do that in a while.:p

I'm sorry, I just can't imagine having big outstanding loans and then buying a $45K toy. Not in my frugal Norwegian nature at all.
