I don't think that there is a good reason. Because its and it's are both very common, I think it was just decided that one of them should have no apostrophe to distinguish. If at the library or bookstore, trying looking up the appropriate section of Lynn Trusse's Eats, Shoot and Leaves, one of the precious few funny grammar books. I think that she does talk about the reason for the lack of apostrophe in its.
And re: Renaissance Fairs, I never went growing up because the one for the Chicago area is in Wisconsin, and well, why would I want to go there?
Grammar nerd question: Normally an apostrophe is used to make a word possessive or to forma contraction, not to make a word plural. So why does "its", which is a possessive, not get an apostrophe?
