TRP: Alcohol-Induced Impotence

Re: TRP: Alcohol-Induced Impotence

Starbucks/Caribou/etc suck. I'm not paying $5 or whatever for a goddam cup of coffee. That, and they're not SO good that you can tell the difference, unless you're comparing it to a truck-stop. That being said, Perkin's has some great coffee. Tastes good, and it really gives you a jump start. For the easterners who don't know, most Perkin's are open 24/7. And it's a full-blown restaurant, not like a Waffle House dive.

I'm staying downtown St Paul, a couple blocks from the X. I believe some easterners are at the same hotel. We reserved the rooms back in April/May of last year. :D

Oh we have/had Perkins in the east; they're great. The one in my hometown closed about 15 years ago and had a Denny's move in. The Denny's is absolutely awful, unfortunately, it's the 24/7 non fast food place within a half hour drive (maybe more?). I wish Perkins was back, or Howard Johnson's restaurant for that matter.

Re: TRP: Alcohol-Induced Impotence

If you're serious you should send me an email, I can help out with a game ticket.

I think its probably too late for me to get out there. If I had 2 more days to get a flight and hotel figured out and also to get work done ahead of time I probably would have done it. I'll still check flights in the morning, just in case.

Anytime someone wants me to fly somewhere, give me a couple days notice and I'll do my best.:p

First off, you can get a cup of coffee for less than 2 bucks at Starbucks or Caribou, which is actually the standard price for most cups of coffee. Where those places screw you is in the shots of espresso or the pumps of syrup.

Second off, I can taste the difference between good coffee and *t coffee. Foldgers = crap. Not all coffees at either Starbucks or Caribou are good, but there are some that are just heavenly. I like Waffle House coffee, 7-11 coffee, and Dunkin Donuts coffee as well though.

Finally, you suck. :p

I'll keep you updated.

Oh sure, the one weekend I travel away from the city and people are making plans to meet here. Nice. Thanks a lot.

Could've told you about this months ago. Cornell-Harvard game = fans showing up in Boston. :p

Re: TRP: Alcohol-Induced Impotence

jmh, I can get a flight for an insanely small amoun of ff miles. Are you going to be there for friday night too?

Re: TRP: Alcohol-Induced Impotence

Starbucks has mediocre coffee at best. Caribou and Dunn Brothers both have better roasts. Caribou's Daybreak, Amy's Blend, and La Minita Peaberry (don't let the name confuse you, this stuff is amazing) are all fantastic.

Re: TRP: Alcohol-Induced Impotence

Starbucks' brewed coffees are OK, if a little on the too strong side at times. Their espresso roast, though, is complete shit. An espresso roast does not mean burning the beans, mmmk? And adding waay too much syrup to a drink won't hide the taste as well as you think.
I love the Tazo teas they serve there, though, and the chai is pretty good, too.
I've never had Caribou's brewed coffees, so I can't judge there, and I've never been to a Dunkin Donuts, so I don't know anything at all about their coffee. I don't know, at the end of the day, I'd rather support the little guy and go to a locally owned place.

By far, worst coffee I've ever had? Hardees. That stuff was just plain revolting, I couldn't even drink it.

They're not so little, but both Caribou and Dunn Bros are Minneapolis based. Caribou is by far the larger of the two chains, though.

To the earlier statement, even I - a man who is not a coffee connesieur - can tell the difference between the various companies' brews. Most of the people I know like Dunn Bros of the three main competitors in downtown Mpls (Starbucks, Caribou, and Dunn Bros), but they're not as plentiful for locations. I prefer Caribou.

Thanks for the heads up on the Espresso Roast from Starbucks. A New Glarus beer for you. :) One of my co-workers owed me for covering for him so he gave me a bag of the Espresso Roast. He claims that I should drink "good" coffee. For my coffee pot at home and at work, I use Folger's Gourmet Dark Roast. It is perfectly fine for me.

When I do order at Starbucks, I usually get a Soy Vanilla Latte with an extra shot of espresso.

Eight O'Clock coffee is not only good, but it's gotten good reviews: http://shopping.yahoo.com/articles/yshoppingarticles/204/consumer-reports-picks-the-best-cup-o-brew
