Trouble at Boston Marathon?

Re: Trouble at Boston Marathon?

While you can't rule out a highly motivated individual here, I'm inclined to the view that more than one person was involved. Four bombs at four locations. All apparently designed to blow up the huge marathon crowds, strikes me as too ambitious for one person. We should all be grateful those additional two devices failed to go off.

Atlanta bomber Eric Robert Rudolph also planted four bombs, but they didn't go off at the same time. One killed a lady at Olympic Centennial park. Another went off later at a gay bar. And two went off at an abortion clinic. The second timed to go off after first responders arrived. But these four bombs didn't go off simultaneously. Rudolph was a serial bomber, not a mass bomber.

As far as the so-called "person of interest" is concerned, I've got two words for you: Richard Jewell.

Reminds me of a professor from my alma mater saying "I'd rather be last and right than first and wrong."

The problem is the absence of deadlines and the vast ocean of time that needs to be filled.

If you're producing a half hour network newscast you know when you have to have that thing ready to go. And you're able to be more selective in what you select for air. You've only got half an hour to fill. So you only select the "A" material. The less informative, less credible information is not used. Not so during wall-to-wall.

Re: Trouble at Boston Marathon?

Tomorrow's Celtics-Pacers game at the Garden has been cancelled and will not be re-scheduled.

Re: Trouble at Boston Marathon?

USA Today just sent a push notice that it is now up to 3 dead.

Re: Trouble at Boston Marathon?

Also, there isn't a suspect (Muslim or not) who was taken into custody as was reported earlier.

Edit: This was reported during the press conference.

Edit 2: The older runner that's been seen in a number of videos knocked off his feet is on CNN right now.

Now we're up to 5 unexploded devices (according to the WSJ and others). So a total of 7. Sounds like a mass attack to me.

Re: Trouble at Boston Marathon?

Source?

At the press conference, didn't they say they didn't find any unexploded devices?

Re: Trouble at Boston Marathon?

Now CNN is reporting that a Saudi woman was injured in one of the blasts. No official source was given by the reporter.

What a cluster****** of reporting today...

Jewell says that he still has problem getting work because of being reported as a person of interest in that bombing. He was completely exonerated, and arguably a hero during that event, his life has been torn asunder by irresponsible journalism.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887323346304578424950102614148.html

Counterterrorism officials found five additional suspect devices, but a law-enforcement official said late Monday that investigators now doubt the devices were bombs.

Two people briefed on the investigation said officials initially believed that the five additional devices could be undetonated explosives. Later Monday, a law-enforcement official said subsequent closer examinations led investigators to doubt that they were bombs.

Update on story.

I think the fact that he's dead is a bigger impediment to his job search.

Okay, I didn't realize that, but the point still stands. I remember him in an interview he gave sometime after 2001, during a program about terrorism in America. He had issues finding employment getting work because people associated that bombing and the fact that he was a person of interest. That fact that he's dead now doesn't detract from the point.

He'd fit right in in Congress.

Coming through South Station was surreal. Absolutely no one downstairs except a traffic cop and only a handful in the terminal. So strange to see a place that is normally a hive of activity completely lifeless.
Made the bus by 3 minutes. I love Boston but I am happy to have it behind me tonight.

ETA: I don't have the ability to post pictures right now but there is a picture of Joe Andruzzi carrying a wounded woman to the hospital. Andruzzi is a former New England Patriot who is from a family of New York City firefighters greeted as heroes at Gillette Stadium after 9/11. Nice to see some things run in the family.

Amalia Barreda of WCVB (NBC Boston) is reporting that a search has been executed in Revere, MA.

Federal agents in Revere search include FBI, Homeland Security, ICE, also state police Boston police and bomb squad. Agents are coming in and out of building but there's no indication yet of what they may have found
Federal state and Boston police at 364 Ocean Ave in Revere. Searching apartment on 5th floor. Not clear what if any connection there is to marathon bombings

We'll see what, if any, connection this has to the explosions and whether it's playing out like she's describing it. I can't find any other sources reporting it.

Re: Trouble at Boston Marathon?

The thing that's driving me nuts when the doctors are being interviewed is that the reporters aren't working to confirm with them that things such as ball bearings were found in the patients. I feel like this is a detail worth asking only because it's been reported but never confirmed officially.

Edit: Sanjay Gupta asking the good questions that gets into the details.

WCVB is the ABC affiliate. And wow, Revere??? No wonder I heard a bunch of police cars blow by my building earlier! That's not too far from where I live.
