Transfer Portal

The other day, somebody mentioned a couple BC players who may be transferring, so I went to look at when the 'transfer portal' opened for DI women's hockey. It opened yesterday morning (with the announcement of the NCAA tournament field).

And the google search also turned up a web page where somebody is tracking and posting the names in the portal (who is in the portal is not 'public knowledge' but it becomes known pretty quickly, nonetheless).

Seventeen new names added today (to those previously there with their opportunity because of coaching changes, grad transfers, etc.); neither of the BC players mentioned, BTW.

Interesting that there are no Harvard players listed on the portal. Given the turmoil with the program, I half expected to see at least three names on the list.

Keep in mind we have no idea how complete or accurate this site might be. I only stumbled across it yesterday. It goes back to August of 2021, but (for example) doesn't list Makenna Webster, who transferred from Wisconsin to Ohio State in May of 2022 (though it does say *current*, and she's obviously not currently in the portal.)

Some interesting names (e.g. Kelsey King of MSU, Mae Batherson of Syracuse, Shailynn Snow of SLU). These are the type of players that tOSU added before their title run in 2022. There are some big classes graduating around the WCHA, so it will be informative to see who does the best job of filling lineup holes.

Fascinating list. 5 St. Cloud players are recent additions. Perhaps a culture change there? One would think you'd want to be a part of the Idalski train or he said they needed to go to the terminal so they did.

There were a bunch of LIU players that went in 13 months ago, yet here they are in the ncaa tourney. I wonder how many of them ended up staying and what roles they are playing. It must have been a reaction to the coaching change.

The five St Cloud players combined for zero goals, four assists, and the one goalie got zero minutes..

I saw quite a few St. Cloud players in the portal and it reminded me when Nadine Muzerall came to Ohio State. She was hired in mid August and several players left before the first game in September. A total change in culture. Before Coach Muzerall, players didn’t attend class, didn’t attend practice, there was no accountability, no discipline, horrible team environment. Coach immediately held players accountable in the classroom, on the ice, in the weight room, etc. Several upper class men didn’t want to be held accountable and left.

I’m not saying there were problems at St. Cloud before Coach Idalski. He is instituting his program and I’m not surprised players don’t fit in with “his” program are entering the portal. He performed wonders for St. Cloud this season and I have no doubt they will improve more this next season with “his players”.

That would explain it to an extent, but there are players up and down the stat line which is unusual. Including a set of twins from Germany who were #2 and #4 statistically.
Whoever walks into this is going to have their work cutout for them.

Maine had a coach change last summer when Ricky Reichenbach left and Molly Engstrom stepped in from SCSU. Molly Engstrom was one of three candidates for coach of the year in Hockey East. The Welcke twins both were named to the Hockey East all rookie team. While they thrived this year they were recruited by the prior coach so I suspect that has something to do with it.

(Molly Engstrom?! Geez, how many former Wisconsin Badger players are out there coaching?)

If I am adding it up correctly, there are 55 women added to the portal since 2/1, of those 28 with 1 year left, 13 with 2, 13 with 3 and 1 with 4. That is a lot of women to find a new spot, and I would guess there are more to be added to the list. Does anyone know what percentage find a new home?

Bilka was teammates with Hadley Hartmetz at SSM and then for a couple of years at bc. Hartmetz transfered a couple of year ago to tOSU and I think she could have a year of eligibility left. With that connection it would seem likely Bilka would answer the Muzzinator's call.
