Transfer Portal

Mark Johnson has quite the coaching tree. Isn't LIU's coach (Kelly Nash) a former Badger, too?

Yes, And 'associate head coach' (or something like that) Jinelle Zaugg Siergeij at St Cloud. And Carla MacLeod is the Czech Republic national team coach right now.

Another new coach situation (Molly Engstrom). Some players there are probably not going to fit in and decided to go elsewhere.

I know her hometown is mighty proud of her.

For example, both the Wisconsin (Johnson) and Minnesota (Darwitz) have coaches on their staffs who were Olympians. What do they have in common? They were both coach's kids. When that is true, I think that from a young age, you think of the game from another perspective. You are more likely to think about the game in terms of all the players on the ice, everyone on the bench, the full roster. The big picture is something you have grown up with, not something you start to think about when your playing days are over.

I agree with this 1000% percent.

I assume all the players with 1 year of eligibility left have been going to school for 4 years and have received their Bachelor’s Degree or will be receiving their Bachelor’s Degree this spring. My attitude is go somewhere else to get their Masters Degree especially if some school is going to give you some scholarship money to play ice hockey. And if you can trade up to a better hockey program all the better.

Last season The Muzinator cherry picked the portal. I'm going to assume it may well be the same this year.
I have a strong suspicion Barnes may become a Buckeye.

Another intriguing Minnesota State player in Anna Wilgren to go along with Kelsey King in the portal...
She would be a great fit for the Gophers, who have a lot of top-rotation blue line shifts available next season. I guess places like UMD do as well.

I mean, The Yuckeye fans just seem to think that the Muzzinator is going to get the best of who is looking to transfer...Sadly they probably aren't wrong.

I don't know..... It's pretty obvious if you want a Natty what school you've gotta go to. Ask Watts and Compher.

No kidding. Buckeye fans are in here saying "wow I bet all these good players really want to come play in Columbus" and then pretending like these rumors they've invented are legitimate. Give me a break

A couple of Sr defensemen from the Fighting Nurses have entered the Portal in Markowski and Wiznewski (Wiznewski being from Minnesota having played high school hockey for Wazayta)

When can players in the transfer portal sign with a new team?

I know that during the 'open period' for a given sport - and that's right now for ice hockey - schools and coaches can contact players in the portal right away. A couple of volleyball players that are transferring to Wisconsin for this coming season have talked about the process and said that within a matter of a few minutes of their names appearing in the portal, they received multiple text messages, phone call, emails, etc. I don't know whether there is any limitation on when they can then commit to a new school. I do know that such a commitment does not have to come within the 'open period'; they can take their time in finding or choosing a new school.

The 'open period' is 60 days long, and began the day the NCAA tournament field was announced. (Meaning the period is a couple weeks different for men's vs for women's hockey.)

Note that that is for the 'open period'. For a student athlete who qualifies for 'the portal' because of a coaching change or loss of scholarship outside of the 'open period', there might well be limits on when coaches can contact them.

4 Yuckeye players now in the portal...Defensman Sydney Morrow being the most intriguing

The Muzzinator most be freeing up cap space to sign some new free agents.

Ohio State players into the transfer portal
Emerson Jarvis
Sydney Morrow
Gali Levy

Jamie Grinder

I’m surprised Jarvis is in the portal. She is a Muzz type of player, she played a lot this year and has a big upside.
Morrow played early and then didn’t even dress later.
Grinder didn’t dress much in 2 years.
Levy may have dressed early.

The other mildly interesting name today is that of Kate Helgeson, from Quinnipiac. She's had a very 'uneventful' two years at Q; the reason she caught my eye is she's the sister of Wisconsin Badger defense Sophie Helgeson.

The first Harvard name to enter the portal-- freshman Jade Arnone. This is not a player who rarely played. The culture must be really bad to forego a Harvard education.
