Top Freshmen

Re: Top Freshmen

I'm not doubting or saying that holds no water, however their numbers were very, very even last year, and that has to count for something, whether that means Iles could have performed as well as Campbell did in the international competitions, we'll never know. Iles will put up excellent numbers at Cornell, partially due to the system they play.

Quit while you're ahead here. Iles was not the top goalie there and while you said it was "arguable" that only proves that someone can argue anything. He wasn't the top goalie there. Let's move on.

Re: Top Freshmen

For LSSU, I think Colin Campbell (forward) should be the top freshman, and he was an under the radar type guy when it came to recruiting.

Interesting how your arguably top goalie didn't play against any of the top teams, Iles is behind Lee and Cambell by a considerable margin.

Re: Top Freshmen

if the team played 56 games and he played 14, hard to say they had him as top goalie. Campbell was the top goalie by a mile and where he was drafted supports taht. That and his huge international wins and championships

Isles is good but might be to small for D 1
You might be right. Campbell didn't seem to play that many games but I don't know who faced the better competition. As a first round pick though I'm sure he's great. I'm just saying Iles might be an under the radar frosh who has a positive impact at the D1 level.

To address the whole Campbell/Ises/Team USA thing:

The posters who are simply looking at the stats from the USHL stat page and trying to draw some parallels really don't understand how the US Development team works. There are two teams (U18s, U17s) but they play as one entity in the USHL - that is why you'll see 4 goalies listed on their team stat page. The U18s only play about 25% of the USHL games, while the U17s play the majority, so that is why it appears the Campbell had such few games. The U18s played against college teams and internationally for most of their games. You also have to look at the teams that each goalie played against - Campbell frew most of the tougher games.

One could argue that this past season's U18 were the deepest, most talented team to ever come thru the Dev program, so both Campbell and Iles benefited from having a great team in front of them, but Campbell proved he's the best North American goalie of his age group in his international play. Not a knock on Iles at all he I would expect he'll be a very solid player for Cornell, but Campbell simply the better of the two.

Re: Top Freshmen

I'm not disagreeing with any of the Campbell discussion. But aren't they the same age roughly? Didn't Iles play against college competition too? And didn't Campbell de-commit from Michigan? Iles will be a college hockey freshman next year so I think he's the one to talk about on this thread. I'm sure that Campbell is much better as evidenced by the fact that he was a first round pick.

Mike Garman at Cornell is taller and over four years older than Iles. But he has played sparingly the last two years. I think it will be interesting to see who plays at the start of the season and who's the #1 goalie by the end of the season.

Re: Top Freshmen

Nick Bjugstad for UM will have a big year if he gets put on a line with some decent players he will be considered but not chosen for Rookie of the Year because he'll get stuck on a line with Patterson and Okposo's ghost.:D

Re: Top Freshmen

For St. Cloud the impact freshmen are likely to be Cam Reid, Mitch Macmillan, and Nic Dowd on offense and Nick Jensen and Kevin Gravel on the blueline.

Campbell did de-commit and will be playing for Windsor this season.

Is this the same Mitch MacMillan that played in the BCHL last year? If so, I'm sure he's going to Northeastern unless I'm wrong.

Yes, it is the same Mitch MacMillan.
He decommited from Northeastern and is playing for SCSU starting this fall.

Re: Top Freshmen

For Northeastern:

Cody Ferriero, Brodie Reid, Braden Pimm on offense.

On defense, a number of potential quality players- Anthony Bitteto is probably the best of the class.

Re: Top Freshmen

For Alaska (Fairbanks), Freshman Cody Kunyk, Canada's Junior A Player of the Year is wearing a Nanook sweater!

Re: Top Freshmen

For Tech, Ryan Furne and Dennis Rix highlight the forwards.
Daniel Sova on D is expected to be a big contributor.

Also, Daniel Holmberg is an import from Sweden with size and skill.

The hope is these guys fit right in and give Tech some badly needed depth.

Looking forward to seeing how the Tech team meshes.
