Both bands are in full form, and the game is about to begin. Minnesota is wearing their famed Maroon, while the Spartans are in White. State traveling from Right to Left.
1st Period:
- Puck has dropped and we're underway from Lake Placid!
- Dave Snuggerud nearly puts the Gophers up, but Ryan Miller with a tremendous save. Snuggerud was wide open in the slot, but his wrister was gloved by Miller.
- Both sides are playing physical, and the boards are shaking here in Lake Placid. 18:00 left in the 1st.
- Now Larry Olimb nearly buries a chance on a wraparound, but Miller gets his leg over just in time to keep this game scoreless. 16:30 left in the 1st, Gophers are buzzing.
- Michigan State really struggling to keep up with Minnesota's speed, but Miller is keeping them in this one. SOG: Minnesota 4-0 Michigan State. 14:30 left in the 1st.
- Oh my! Minnesota's Todd Richards takes an ill-advised penalty in the neutral zone as he lays a huge hit on a Sparty defender and is called for interference.
- Adam Hall Scores!! The Gophers fail to clear the zone, and Brad Fast, whips a pass over to Hall in the slot who roofs it over Stauber. It's 1-0 State. 13:19 left in the 1st.
- Michigan State with all the momentum now. Woog is still yapping at the refs about the Richards penalty...
- Andrew Hutchinson hits the post!! Michigan State cycles the puck around to the point where Hutchinson blasts one past Stauber, but off the crossbar. 10:00 left in the 1st.
- Grant Bischoff scores!! Randy Skarda feeds a beautiful pass up to Bischoff who comes in all alone and beats Miller five hole. 9:44 left in the 1st.
- Miller makes another nice save, robbing Olimb with the glove. 8:00 left in the 1st
- Miller comes up big again. He's single handedly keeping State in this game. Could easily be 3 or 4-1.
- Uh oh, Michigan State to go back on the powerplay, as Ben Hankinson takes a Roughing penalty after Miller's save. 6:39 left in the 1st.
- Stauber under siege. Michigan State's powerplay is electric right now, but so far Stauber has come up big, stopping 3 or 4 good chances.
- Minnesota kills the penalty, but Michigan State keeps putting on the pressure. Under 3 left in the 1st.
- Stauber with another big save, this time on a State 2x1. Under a minute left in the 1st.
- John Nail scores!! Nail fires a wrister from the top of the left circle, and the puck trickles past Stauber. 2-1 State with just 16 seconds left in the 1st.
- That's the end of 1. State up 2-1. SOG: State outshooting Minnesota 11-10.
1st Intermission Update: The Bands Are Fighting!!! As the Gopher band was making its way around the arena, a Michigan State tuba player gets taken out. Instantly (well, as instantly as a band can) the Sparty band comes to his rescue. The melee lasts 4-5 minutes until Woog and Mason come out to center ice to implore both sides to stop. This game's intensity just got ratcheted up another notch. ask and ye shall receive.
2nd Period:
- Puck has dropped, and the 2nd period is underway
- Once again, Minnesota comes out of the gates flying, and Skarda nearly scores on a blast from the blue line, but it sails just wide. 19:00 left in the 2nd.
- Dave Snuggerud Scores!! Tom Chorske takes a pass from Jason Miller, puts it on net, Miller is unable to control the rebound, and Snuggerud scores. Game tied at 2.
- The Minnesota band now plays 'The Victors', and the Sparty band is outraged!
- The tension in the stands now carries over to the ice, as both squads are upping the physicality right now...16:00 left in the 2nd.
- We've got matching minors, as Randy Skarda and Jon Insana mix it up after a whistle. We'll skate 4x4 for two minutes, 14:46 left in the 2nd.
- Matching minors are over. Both teams are paying cautious right now...Just over 12:00 left in the 2nd.
- Michigan State to go back on the powerplay, as Olimb hauls down Rustyn Dolyny after a long cycle. State is 1 for 2 on the PP today. 9:58 left in the 2nd.
- Damon Whitten Scores!! Whitten picks up the rebound left by Stauber after a blast from John-Michael Liles, and Sparty is back on top. 8:29 left in the 2nd.
- It's all Sparty right now...Stauber standing on his head to keep this game within 1. 6:30 left in the 2nd.
- State draws another penalty, this time Lance Pitlick gets called for interference. Woog livid at the refs. 4:24 left in the 2nd
- Brian Maloney Scores!! Once again, Minnesota fails to clear the zone, and Maloney picks the puck up, and fires one past the screened Stauber. 4-2 State
- Under two left in the 2nd, and Sparty is looking for the kill. All State right now.
- State back to the powerplay, as Hall is tripped up by Ben Hankinson. Just 41 seconds left in the period.
- Oh boy! Michigan State appeared to score at the buzzer, but after review, the puck never crossed the line, as Stauber was able to get his glove on it.
- At the end of 2, It's Michigan State 4, Minnesota 2. State will have 1:19 left on the powerplay to start the third
- Shots on Goal in the 2nd: Michigan State - 15 (for a total of 26) , Minnesota - 7 (for a total of 17)
3rd Period:
- Puck dropped for the start of the 3rd. Michigan State with 1:19 left on the powerplay...
- Tom Chorske Scores Shorthanded!! Chorske breaks up a pass at the blueline, and races in all alone, and roofs the puck over Miller. We got a 4-3 game!
- Minnesota kills the remainder of the penalty, and the Gopher crowd is going insane. 18:00 left in the 3rd.
- Both sides playing somewhat tentative here following the Minnesota goal...16:30 left in the 3rd.
- Stauber with a huge save on Dolyny on a 2x1. That keeps this one within a goal. 15:15 left in the 3rd.
- Troy Ferguson Scores!! Tic-Tac-Toe on a 3x2, as Jeremy Jackson drops it back to Joe Markusen, who finds Ferguson at the dot, and Furguson puts it home. 5-3 Sparty.
- Stauber makes a nice play, this time diving out of the crease to poke check the puck away from Whitten to prevent a golden chance. 13:00 left in the 3rd.
- Minnesota starting to put on some pressure. Just over 11:00 left in the 3rd.
- Minnesota will go on the powerplay for the first time tonight, as Olimb gets crushed behind the net by Sean Patchell, who gets called for crosschecking. 10:29 left
- Now Minnesota will go on a 5x3 for over 1:30! Andrew Hutchinson slashes the stick out of Chorske's hands, and gets the minor. 10:05 left in the 3rd.
- Snuggerud Scores!! Snuggerud cashes in on a juicy rebound left after a Chorske slap shot to make it a 5-4 game. Gophers still have 1:09 left of a 5x4 advantage.
- Olimb Scores!! State wins a draw in their own zone, but Olimb steals the puck, and puts one towards the net that deflects off a Sparty d-man, and in the net. Tie Game!
- Stauber comes up with a huge save! Liles lets a shot rip from the blue line, and Stauber gets a piece of it, then robs Hall's rebound attempt. Under 8:00 left to play
- Now it's Ryan Miller's turn to make a big stop, this time on Ben Hankinson. 6:30 left in the 3rd.
- Oh boy! Michigan State to head back to the powerplay, as Peter Hankinson gets called for Charging after laying a huge hit in the neutral zone. Woog not happy again.
- Minnesota kills off the penalty. We're under 3:30 left in the 3rd...
- Minnesota putting on the pressure, but so far haven't been able to generate that great chance...Under 2 left in the 3rd.
- Chants of "Hobey Baker" ring out from the Spartan Faithful, as Ryan Miller absolutely stones Larry Olimb on a great chance from the slot. Just 30 seconds left...
- Overtime here we come! Minnesota scores 3 times in the third to tie this game at 5...Wow!

- Very slow start, as both teams are nervous. Under 16:00 left to play in OT
- Skarda hits the post!! Oh my, Skarda lets a wrist shot go from just outside the circle, and it beats Miller short side, but rings off the post. 14:00 left to play in OT.
- A lot of play in the neutral zone, as neither team wants to give anything up. 12:00 left to play in OT
- Chorske with a nice chance, as Richards found Chorske open in the slot, but Chorske fired it wide. 10:00 left to play in OT

- Now it's Hall's turn to be stoned by Stauber, as Hall comes in from the circles, makes a nice deke from his backhand to his forehand, but Stauber gets his leg out to stop the shot. 17:30 left in the 2nd OT.
- Minnesota starting to mount some pressure. Miller forced to save three consecutive shots in the span of about 8 seconds, but he's up to the task. 16:00 left in 2OT
- Woog up again to jab at the refs. Apparently, Woog felt that the refs missed an obvious hooking call behind the net. 15:00 left in 2OT
- John Nail hits the post!! My goodness, Nail comes in on a clean breakway, dekes Stauber, but his shot rings off the crossbar!! 13:30 left in 2OT

Thanks. I figured I'll bring in some of the "hit bands" from around the time of the home team to sing the national anthem.
And I too thought it was odd that both Stauber and Miller allowed that many goals, but they were largely due to special teams (each team had 3 Special Teams goals)

Pretty easily actually. For example, based on their ranking and point value, Michigan State was only a 51.72% favorite to win the game. That means that in 100 games played, They will likely win 52, while Minnesota will win 48. The simulator plays the game out based largely on the formula, but also on certain characteristics of teams (ex. how often they take penalties, how good each team's powerplay/penalty kill is, etc.). Basically, I input the data that the simulator requires, and it then spits back to me a box score of sorts. I then relay that box score back in the form of updates.

I don't know if anyone (else) is of an age to remember the old Strat-O-Matic simulator (cards with odds on them and a set of dice). Every now and then someone might roll a low probability score several times in a row....like playing backgammon when you're way ahead and then the other player gets doubles three times out the next four rolls.

I still play stratomatic baseball on through their website...used to be on sportingnews.com but they moved last year. 2012 baseball cards should be out soon!

The next game that will be done will be between the 2004-2005 BC Eagles (#63) and the 2006-2007 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (#66) at Madison Square Garden. No word yet on puck drop (Sometime between Saturday and Monday). The winner will move on to play the 1969-1970 Cornell Big Red (#2).
