It would have taken a 6 year player in this case, but no, nobody on the '02-03 squad played for the '07-08 squad.

That brings to mind Rick Tosto who played for the RPI 1985 championship team although he didn't play in the NCAA tourney. He then transferred to Michigan State and was on their 1986 championship team. Transfers didn't have to sit out a year then. I don't think that he played in the tourney then either.

Change of schedule...next game will be tomorrow around noon (eastern). The game? 1993-1994 Michigan (#37) against 2000-2001 St. Cloud State (#92). Only three games were requested, and they all received 1 "vote." As a result, I used a random number generator to determine that the Michigan-SCSU matchup would be next.

I am sure that somewhere in the past 249 posts there is a complete bracket, but could you tell me which team will face the 1985 RPI team in the second round (or which of two possibilities if that first round game hasn't been played yet)?

Game Update Post

The teams are just about to hit the ice for warmups, but I managed to get a quick talk in with coaches from both sides. Michigan Assistant Mel Pearson let us know that Steve Shields will get the start in net, and SCSU Head Coach Craig Dahl said that Scott Meyer will start for the Huskies. This should be another tremendous matchup, with the winner moving on to the second round to take on the #28 2004-2005 Colorado College Tigers. Puck drop is set for 12:00pm (Eastern).

Both squads are finishing up warmups, and the crowd here in Milwaukee is electric. Michigan is wearing white, while SCSU is wearing black.

The teams just finished up introductions, and who is that coming out on the ice for the national anthem? BLIND MELON!!

That was beautiful! Who would have thought that Shannon Hoon, dead since 1995, could still bring down the house. Wonderful performance!

Puck drop just seconds away, and you can feel the energy and nervous excitement throughout the crowd and on the benches of both sides. This should be a classic!

1st Period:
- Puck had dropped, and Michigan's Brian Wiseman wins the draw...Game on!
- Tyler Arnason Scores!! St. Cloud starts the game out on fire, as Jon Cullen wins a neutral zone battle, and skates the puck into the Wolverine zone. Cullen then finds Arnason at the far circle, and Arnason lasers a one-timer past Shields to give the Huskies the early 1-0 lead just 35 seconds in!
- Shields with a tremendous save! Mark Hartigan was coming in 1x2, and found enough room to get to the slot about 20 feet out, and ripped a wrist shot, but Shields flashes leather to keep this game within 1 for the time being. It's all SCSU early on here in Milwaukee. 18:00 left in the 1st.
- Now the Huskies will head to the powerplay after Rick Willis gets called for slashing Ryan Malone in the neutral zone. 17:21 left in the 1st.
- Mark Hartigan Scores!! Hartigan wins an offensive zone draw back to Jon Cullen, and Cullen skates the puck to the slot and fires a wrist shot that Shields gets a piece of, but there is a scramble for the rebound, and Hartigan gets control of the puck and slams it home to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead just 3 and a half minutes into the game.
- During the stoppage, Red Berenson was visibly upset with his team. It seems to have paid off, as the Wolverines have more of a jump in their step right now. 15:00 left in the 1st.
- John Madden with a great chance! Madden steals the puck from Derek Eastman near center ice, then beats Ritchie Larson along the near boards to come in on a semi-break. Madden tries to use his speed to get around Meyer, but the Huskie goalie is up for the task and makes a beautiful kick save to keep SCSU up by 2. 13:00 left in the 1st.
- Now Michigan will head to the powerplay, as Mike Stone is leveled into the boards by Jeff Finger, who will serve 2 for boarding. 12:41 left in the 1st.
- Beautiful job on the PK by SCSU. Michigan held without a shot on goal during the man advantage.
- Derek Eastman with a tremendous hit! Mike Knuble was trying to get by Eastman on the far boards, and Eastman leveled Knuble with a textbook hipcheck. 9:00 left in the 1st.
- Now the Wolverines will head back to the powerplay, as John Madden gets cross-checked in front of the SCSU net by Duvie Westcott. 8:05 left in the 1st.
- Mike Knuble Scores!! SCSU tries to clear the zone, but Steve Halko manages to keep the puck in with a tremendous leaping effort. Halko then rips a slap shot on net that Meyer kicks out, but the rebound goes straight to Knuble who buries the puck into the open net. 2-1 SCSU with 7:14 left in the 1st.
- Both sides are a bit tentative after that goal, and we seem to be stuck in the neutral zone. 5:00 left in the 1st.
- Ryan Malone is robbed! Malone gets a pass from Eastman just before the Wolverine blueline, and comes streaking in along the far boards, and rips a shot that seems destined for the top shelf, but Shields makes an unbelievable save with the glove to keep this game at 2-1. 4:00 left in the 1st.
- Ryan Sittler hits the post! Michigan was in the midst of a strong cycle as the clock ticks down in the first, and Kevin Hilton made a great pass from behind the net to find Sittler below the near dot, and Sittler fires a wrist shot that beats Meyer, but hits the far post. Still 2-1 with just 2:30 left in the 1st.
- Mike Knuble appeared to score, but the ref behind the net waives it off. Knuble was in front of the net, along with a couple of SCSU defenders and Meyer, and Wiseman sent a low wrister from the far circle that Meyer stopped, but Knuble appeared to score on the rebound. The officials are reviewing this one...
- No goal. Upon review, the ref determined that Knuble directed the puck in with his skate. Still 2-1 SCSU with just under a minute left in the 1st.
- That's the end of the first period, with St. Cloud State up 2-1 over Michigan.
- Shots on goal in the first: SCSU - 10, Michigan - 7.

2nd Period:
- Both sides are ready and the puck has dropped for the 2nd period. SCSU up 2-1.
- Brian Wiseman with a great chance starting off, as the Wolverine center won a battle in the corner and walked out and ripped a shot low, but Meyer had his stick in the proper position and steers the puck away to keep this 2-1. 18:30 left in the 2nd.
- Joe Motzko with a nice chance. Westcott dumped the puck into the Wolverine zone, and Motzko won the battle to the puck, and attempted a wrap-around, but Shields was read and smothered Motzko's chance. 17:00 left in the 2nd.
- Michigan headed to the powerplay, as David Oliver was crushed into the boards by Derek Eastman. The officials are talking this one over...this could be a major
- It's a 5 and a game misconduct, and Eastman is shown the door. Michigan now with a tremendous chance to get this tied and potentially take the lead. 15:40 left in the 2nd.
- Early on the major, SCSU doing a tremendous job killing this one. Michigan unable to get the puck in the Husky zone. 3:45 left on the powerplay.
- Brendan Morrison hits the crossbar! Jason Botterill cycles the puck behind the SCSU goal, and comes out along the far post and finds Morrison streaking to the near post. Morrison beats Meyer, but the puck rings off the crossbar. 2:15 left in the major.
- Brendan Morrison scores!! Morrison doesn't miss this time. Botterill again has the puck, this time below the far circle along the goal line. Westcott comes out to challenge him, and Botterill finds Morrison backdoor once again, and this time Morrison buries the puck to tie this game at 2. Still over 90 seconds left in the major.
- Michigan is buzzing, but the major is nearly over.
- Chris Purslow Scores!! Michigan's powerplay ends, and Purslow, who was serving the major, comes out of the box. Joe Motzko gets control of the puck and finds Purslow, and Purslow comes in on Shields all by himself and rips a wrister over Shields' blocker to put the Huskies back up. 3-2 SCSU with 10:35 left in the 2nd.
- Purslow's goal has the Huskies and their fans back up on their feet, and we have yet another momentum shift in this one. All SCSU right now. 9:30 left in the 2nd.
- Ryan Malone nearly puts the Huskies up by 2. Michigan launches a long shot from the blue line, and Meyer steers it aside to Westcott who finds Keith Anderson coming up the near boards. Anderson pushes into the Michigan zone, then leaves a beautiful drop pass to Malone, who fires a slapper from just inside the near circle that Shields just gets a piece of with the glove and it trickles over the Wolverine net. Still 3-2 SCSU with 7:45 left in the 2nd.
- Nate DiCasmirro with a tremendous chance. DiCasmirro finds the puck following a draw in the Michigan zone, and launches a wrister that fools Shields, but the puck sails just wide. Still 3-2 with 5:30 left in the 2nd.
- SCSU will head back to the powerplay, as Jason Botterill trips Tyler Arnason behind the Wolverine net, and SCSU will have a 2 minute man advantage.
- John Madden with a great chance shorthanded. Michigan cleared the zone, and Brandon Sampair tried to get by the feisty Wolverine, but Madden stripped the puck, and came in 1x1 and let fly a slapper from the slot, but Meyer made a great glove save. About 30 seconds left on the SCSU powerplay.
- Michigan kills the rest of the powerplay. 2:30 left in the 2nd.
- Pretty even play here at the end of the 2nd, but nothing in terms of scoring chances right now. 1:00 left in the 2nd.
- SCSU back to the powerplay. Jon Cullen dumped the puck into the Michigan zone, but Mike Knuble leveled Cullen well after he dumped the puck, and Knuble gets called for interference with just 20 seconds left in the 3rd.
- SCSU gets a great chance just before the end of the period, but Arnason rips the puck over the net and the horn sounds. 3-2 SCSU after 2 periods.
- Shots on goal in the 2nd: Michigan - 11, SCSU - 8.

SCSU up 3-2 after 2 periods

3rd Period:
- Puck has dropped for the start of the 3rd, and SCSU has 1:40 left on the powerplay
- Mark Hartigan nearly puts the Huskies up by 2, but his wrister from the near circle whistles just wide. About 45 seconds left on the powerplay.
- John Madden Scores!! Tyler Arnason tries to hold the puck in along the far boards, but the puck bounces over his stick, and Madden is off to the races. Madden fires a wrister through Meyer's five hole and we're tied up at 3 early in the third. SCSU still has about 20 seconds of powerplay time left.
- Michigan kills the remainder of the powerplay, and the Maize and Blue in the stands go bananas. 18:00 left in the 3rd.
- Play has slowed a bit, and there is a lot of play in the neutral zone, as neither side wants to make another mistake. 15:30 left in the 3rd. 3-3 game.
- Tyler Arnason with a great chance, but Shields makes a great save. Arnason and Sampair break free at center ice on a 2x1 with Halko defending for the Wolverines. Arnason carries the puck into the zone, and passes over to Sampair who fires a wrist shot that Shields gets a pad on, but the rebound comes out to Arnason who tries to go top shelf, but Shields makes a tremendous glove save to keep the game tied at 3. 13:30 left in the 3rd.
- All SCSU right now. The Huskies have been cycling the puck and have had a couple of decent chances go wide of the net. 12:00 left in the 3rd.
- Now SCSU draws a penalty as Warren Luhning slashes Matt Hendricks in the corner, and the Huskies will have the man advantage with 11:17 left in the 3rd.
- OH MY! Jon Cullen had a glorious chance to put SCSU back up, as Mark Hartigan's wrist shot gets deflected in front of Shields and lands on Cullen's stick with a nearly wide open net. Cullen tries to jam it home, but the puck trickles just wide of the net. About 1:00 left on the powerplay for the Huskies.
- Brandon Sampair gets robbed by Shields! Arnason wins a faceoff to Sampair who fires a wrister through traffic. Shields reacts late, but just in time as he is able to get his glove on a shot labeled for the top shelf. SCSU has about 20 seconds left on the powerplay.
- And Michigan kills the penalty. 9:00 left in the 3rd.
- Ryan Malone with a nice chance as the Huskies came in on a 3x2. Malone gets the puck right at the near dot and rips a wrist shot on Shields, but Shields gets the blocker on it and sends the puck into the nets. 7:30 left in the 3rd, and SCSU has the momentum.
- Michigan finally gets some momentum going, but Duvie Westcott makes a tremendous play, blocking a slapshot from the point by Harold Schock. The puck sails out of play, and Schock and Westcott exchange words and a bit more following the whistle. Looks like we'll have matching minors here as Schock and Westcott each receiving a 2 minute minor for roughing, and we'll skate 4x4 for the next two minutes, as just 5:44 is left on the clock.
- Jason Botterill Scores!! Brendan Morrison dumped the puck into the Husky zone, and Botterill was the first there. Botterill circles behind the SCSU cage, and finds Morrison at the near circle. Morrison fires a wrister on net, and Meyer gets a piece of it, but the rebound comes to Botterill at the far post, and he jams the puck home to give the Wolverines a 4-3 lead with just 3:53 left in the 3rd.
- The matching minors are over, and we're back to 5x5. The Husky faithful have not given up, but there is a look of despair for those in black and red. 3:00 left in the 3rd.
- Arnason and Cullen nearly connect, but Arnason's pass from behind the net just jumps over Cullen's stick as he was streaking into the slot. SCSU putting on lots of pressure here down a goal. 2:00 left in the 3rd.
- SCSU heading to the powerplay! The Huskies draw a penalty as Ryan Malone was held by Mike Knuble as Malone was trying to make his way to the net. Just 1:02 left on the clock. Coach Dahl has called his timeout, and Meyer is on the bench. Huskies will skate 6x4!
- John Madden nearly ends it. The Wolverines win the defensive zone draw, and Madden gets control of the puck and tries to take it up the far boards. From center ice, Madden fires it at the net, but it just misses wide. About 30 seconds to go here, and SCSU needs to get something going.
- That's the game! Tyler Arnason fires a slapshot from the point with about 2 seconds left, and it gets deflected into the corner. The buzzer sounds, and the 1993-1994 Michigan Wolverines advance to the second round to take on the 2004-2005 Colorado College Tigers.
- Shots in the third period: SCSU - 12, Michigan - 9

I'm tried looking, but have you described in this thread how the three sided dice simulator and TI SR50 slide rule calculator are used to perform the outcomes?

Well, it's not my simulator (it was designed by the guys at College Hockey Weekly before they closed up shop), so I don't know exactly what is in it. That being said, it uses the statistics from the team, their point value from my formula, and then a bunch of other statistics from the years of the two teams (such as average penalty minutes/goals scores/shots attempted). It was originally designed to predict games within the current season (using KRACH instead of my formula, it was correct about 70-75% of the time, and close to 85% by the end of the season...and no, it did not predict a Yale title, but did have QU playing for the National Title against Lowell), but they tweaked it for me. Basically, I plug in the data from the two teams, and it creates 100 events (ex. 1. Shot Missed - High - St. Cloud State - Tyler Arnason or 36. Penalty - Major - St. Cloud State - Derek Eastman - Checking from Behind). I then take the data and turn it into a script of sorts for my update posts.

Hopefully that helps answer some of your questions about the process. I wish I could explain better, but I'm simply not a programmer guy.

Game Update Post

The crowd is starting to pour in here in Cincinnati, as longtime rivals North Dakota and Minnesota are squaring off in the First Round of the Top 100 Tournament. I just talked with first year head coach John Mariucci, and he let me know that James Mattson will get the start in net tonight for Minnesota. In the other net, assistant coach Dave Hakstol informed me that Karl Goehring will get the start. This should be an intense classic, with the winner advancing to the second round to take on the 2010-2011 North Dakota Fighting Sioux. Puck drop expected at 11:30am (Eastern).

Both teams are out on the ice, and the atmosphere in an already filled arena is electric. North Dakota is wearing white, while Minnesota has on their maroon sweaters.

Teams are back out for introductions, and the maroon and green crowd is going crazy.

Now it's time for the national anthem...why do I hear dogs barking??? UH OH!!! Ladies and Gentlemen, singing the national anthem today is the BAHA MEN!

What a beautiful performance...that should certainly get this party bumpin'. Puck Drop coming up next...

1st Period:
- Puck has dropped and we're underway! Jeff Panzer wins the draw for North Dakota.
- Ryan Bayda nearly puts the Sioux up early, but Mattson makes a great save on Bayda's shot from the slot.
- And the Gophers will head to the powerplay early. John Mayasich was coming into the zone along the near boards, made a nice move, and was headed for the slot when David Hale tripped up Mayasich. Minnesota with the man advantage for 2:00 here early on in the first.
- Richard Meredith with a great chance, but Karl Goehring was up to the task, getting his blocker on Meredith's writer from below the far dot. 1:00 left in the powerplay.
- John Mayasich Scores!! Mayasich wins an offensive zone draw as the penalty was nearing its end. Kenneth Yackel picks the puck up and flips a shot on net that gets deflected in front. Mayasich wins the scramble for the puck, and slides it in the net to give the Gophers the early lead. 1-0 Minnesota. 15:54 left in the 1st.
- North Dakota putting on pressure, but Minnesota is doing a tremendous job in front of their net to prevent any chances from getting to the goalie. 14:00 left in the 1st.
- Bryan Lundbohm with a great effort, but Mattson is up to the task. North Dakota was changing lines, and instead of dumping the puck in, Lundbohm challenges the two Gopher defenders. Using his speed, he splits the two through the slot, gets a step and is in on Mattson. Lundbohm tries a forehand-backhand deke, but Mattson is not fooled, and Lundbohm's backhand is ripped out of the air by Mattson's glove to keep the Gophers up 1-0. 12:00 left in the 1st.
- A lot of play in the neutral zone ends when Tim Skarperud gets checked from behind and into the boards by Wenell Anderson. The officials discussed the hit, but decided that it would be 2 minutes for boarding. North Dakota to the powerplay with 10:27 left in the 1st.
- Minnesota does a tremendous job on the kill, limiting North Dakota to zero shots on goal thanks to some timely blocked shots. 8:00 left in the 1st. 1-0 Gophers.
- Despite the lack of success on that powerplay, North Dakota is still controlling play. Gophers struggling to get the puck out of their zone right now. 7:00 left in the 1st.
- North Dakota draws another penalty, this time Jeff Panzer gets slashed by James Tschida, and the Sioux have the man advantage once again. 6:02 left in the 1st.
- Travis Roche just misses a great scoring chance. Jeff Panzer wins an offensive zone faceoff, and Bayda passes it over to Roche at the point, and Roche rips a slapshot that beats Mattson, but the puck sails wide. Minnesota then tries to clear the zone, and Aaron Schneekloth tries to pinch in to keep the puck in the zone, but it sneaks through. Mayasich would have had a clean break, but Schneekloth hauls him down and draws an interference penalty. We'll skate 4x4 for about a minute, and then a short Gopher powerplay. 4:58 left in the 1st.
- Minnesota back to full strength, and they'll have about 55 seconds of powerplay.
- North Dakota kills the short Gopher powerplay. It's still 1-0 with about 2:30 left in the 1st.

2nd Period:
- Puck has dropped for the second period!
- Jeff Panzer Scores!! Panzer wins the opening draw, and Travis Roche dumps the puck into the Gopher zone. Minnesota tries to clear, but Ryan Bayda stops the puck along the far boards, finds a streaking Panzer into the slot, and Panzer rips a wrister over Mattson to tie this game up at 1, just 14 seconds into the 2nd.
- Bryan Lundbohm Scores!! Jason Notermann gets the puck in the neutral zone and takes it in along the near boards, fires the puck around the boards to Bryan Lundbohm in the far corner. Lundbohm fires what looked like an innocent wrister, but it beats Mattson shortside, and less than a minute into the second and the Sioux take a 2-1 lead.
- Coach Mariucci takes his timeout. The North Dakota crowd is going bananas right now.
- Mayasich showing his leadership right now, as he basically took over that last shift, but it didn't lead to a scoring chance. Minnesota looked stunned after the back to back goals by the Sioux, but they have regained their composure here after the timeout. 18:00 left in the 2nd.
- Gophers earn a powerplay after Chris Leinweber gets called for elbowing Linder Peterson...Mariucci wanted a 5 for that, but it's only a 2. 16:38 left in the 2nd.
- Gene Campbell Scores!! John Mayasich wins the offensive zone draw after the penalty, and Campbell gets the puck, skates to the point, and fires a low wrister that gets past the screened Goehring, and we're tied at 2! 16:31 left in the 2nd
- Minnesota is really controlling play right now, but North Dakota is limiting any quality scoring chances. 15:00 left in the 2nd.
- The Gophers will head back to the powerplay, as Mayasich received a nasty slash from Jason Notermann. Mayasich is shaking his wrist and is heading back to the tunnel to get that looked at. Hopefully he'll be okay. 13:18 left in the 2nd, and Minnesota is on the man advantage.
- North Dakota kills the powerplay. Mayasich is back on the bench, but didn't see any icetime during the powerplay.
- Lots of back and forth in the neutral zone right now, as neither side wants to give up an inch.
- OH MY! Looks like we'll have matching minors. Mayasich made his way back on the ice, and Travis Roche lays out the star Gopher forward. The refs confer, and give 2 minutes to Roche for cross-checking and 2 minutes to Mayasich for embellishment. Mariucci and Blais are both livid over this one...but we'll skate 4x4 for the next two minutes, with just under 9:00 left in the 2nd.
- Neither side able to do much skating 4x4, and both sides are back to full strength.
- Dump and chase is the flavor of the action currently. It seems the second one team dumps the puck in to the other's zone, that team gets the puck to center and dumps it in the other zone. Rinse and repeat. 4:00 left in the 2nd.
- North Dakota is really pressuring the Gophers right now. A few shots from the point and a great look by Lundbohm have all been stopped by Mattson. 3:00 left in the 2nd.
- Quinn Fylling hits the post! North Dakota was cycling the puck behind the net, and Tim Skarperud found Fylling just below the near circle. Fylling lifted a wrister up, and it beat Mattson, but rang off the crossbar, and we're still tied at 2 with about 90 seconds left.
- Jeff Panzer Scores!! North Dakota traps Minnesota in their own zone, unable to change, and a tired Gopher squad was unable to stop Panzer from unleashing a Howitzer to the top shelf from the slot, following a great feed from behind the net by Ryan Bayda. North Dakota is now up 3-2 with 1:08 left in the 2nd.
- That's the end of the second period, as neither side was able to mount much following Panzer's goal. North Dakota leads 3-2.

Well, it's not my simulator (it was designed by the guys at College Hockey Weekly before they closed up shop), so I don't know exactly what is in it. That being said, it uses the statistics from the team, their point value from my formula, and then a bunch of other statistics from the years of the two teams (such as average penalty minutes/goals scores/shots attempted). It was originally designed to predict games within the current season (using KRACH instead of my formula, it was correct about 70-75% of the time, and close to 85% by the end of the season...and no, it did not predict a Yale title, but did have QU playing for the National Title against Lowell), but they tweaked it for me. Basically, I plug in the data from the two teams, and it creates 100 events (ex. 1. Shot Missed - High - St. Cloud State - Tyler Arnason or 36. Penalty - Major - St. Cloud State - Derek Eastman - Checking from Behind). I then take the data and turn it into a script of sorts for my update posts. Hopefully that helps answer some of your questions about the process. I wish I could explain better, but I'm simply not a programmer guy.

Yes thanks, was just curious and the 70% plus sounds surprising. That is only for picking the winner or the score as well?
