Time to drop a deuce: the second MN Gopher Offseason Thread

Re: Time to drop a deuce: the second MN Gopher Offseason Thread

Nick Leddy...

Evidently he was well coached but the credit for his development seems to have gone to Phil Housley.

Based on a couple of summers of AAA hockey? Wow, I knew Phil was good, didn't know he was THAT good.

Re: Time to drop a deuce: the second MN Gopher Offseason Thread

Not a suprise, I talked to some people in the athletic department and they are all saying a Big Ten Hockey Conference is a done deal. The majority of non conference games (95 to 99%) will be home against WCHA schools.

Those that sold for oil rights do...:D

That is true.... North Dakota has the most millionaires per capita than any state in the country. They and Montana are the only states with budget surplus(Thank God for Oil). In fact they are shipping in people to work petty jobs such as waitress, cook, janitor, ect.... because all of the residents are RICH BEEEEEAAAACH.... Now is they only had some scenery and wasn't so **** cold and windy it wouldn't be a bad place to live..... Maybe throw in a few million trees as well :p

Re: Time to drop a deuce: the second MN Gopher Offseason Thread

The UMass ticket manager came through for me and got seats for both games. I'll be Section 9 Row 4. Feel free to stop by and say hello at intermissions -- look for a short guy in maroon UMass jersey and baseball cap. If he responds to a greeting with a Russian accent, that's me. :)

I am excited about this trip even though my buddies bailed on me (thus I am coming alone). It's going to be an awesome weekend of hockey -- and, to address HarleyMC's point, yes, I am aware that UMass has lost a lot of production from last year. We have a very young team and I will be completely shocked (albeit pleasantly) if we win both games.

A couple of questions, since CHTG is down:

1) Can you give me some recommendations on what's there to see in Minneapolis (besides Gopher hockey) during that weekend? I will be arriving to MSP around noon on Friday and leaving around 3 pm on Sunday. Suggestions would be appreciated...

2) What kind of food is Minnesota famous for? Are there eateries you folks would recommend to a visitor? What about local brew pubs?

Thanks for your help!

You'll find that much of the food in Minnesota is on par with what was available in Stalingrad in '44.

The Lutefisk and Lefse are two popular dishes.

Bull, it depends on what your tastes are. The Twin Cities area is gaining popularity as one of the food hotspots in the country, and rightly so. There's plenty of great places to eat, no matter what you're in the mood for.

If you want a never-ending meat fest, check out Fogo de Chao. You'll pay a pretty penny, but you can eat all the best meats you want until you can't take any more. Fun atmosphere too.

Sushi: check out Seven. Never been there but I've heard great things.

Asian: Plenty of places downtown, but since you'll be on campus anyway, check out Village Wok on Washington Ave south of Mariucci arena. Ate there on a weekly basis when going to school, and it can't be beat. If you're more into Vietnemese, check out Pho 79 in St. Paul. Eaten there several times. Best spring rolls in the universe, and great Pho as well.

If you just want a burger, try American Burger Bar in St. Paul. There's also lots of pubs that serve great burgers and bar food.

Drinks: On campus, I highly recommend Stub & Herbs before game time (but get there early). Keegan's in downtown Mpls is fun, as is Hubert's or Smalley's.

I could go on, but I'll let others fill in the blanks.

Depending on what else you like to do there is plenty of things to see.

- Visit the new Twins stadium. Even if it's not open there is plenty of places to see into it from.

- Visit Mall of America. If you only ever go once, that is plenty. Although they do have a decent aquarium there.

- If it's not cold there is plenty of lakes within the city to visit and people watch.

- If you just want to check out different bar/restaurants I would start with Downtown (Brit's, The Local, Kieran's) and Uptown (Cafeteria, Slim's, Stellas) as they will have the most variety of choices. Unless you are looking for a specific location, such as dive bars or unique spots (Gasthofs).

- Visit the capital area in St. Paul. It's just outside the downtown area which also has a few museums (history, science, etc.).

Goofer fans are most famous for eating their words, I would skip the dissention and fire lucia talk and have the roadhouse burger at Ike's, any burger at Matt's Bar (famous for stuffed burgers), Seven has some of the best sushi in the twin cities, and McCormick & Schmick's has really good seafood and happy hour.

And after the game a short drive to Alary's in Saint Paul is WELL WORTH THE 10 min drive..... The hottest ladies around http://alarys.com/ and you won't have to worry about duchebags at the bar because 95% of clientel are cops.

Booted for being a pothead, thus violating the code of conduct.

Williams pub on Hennepin in downtown Minneapolis is a good brew pub. Around campus you'll get a different crowd, more students. Loring Pasta Bar on 4th street is near campus (Dinkytown), Kitty kat club is next door, Bars are across the street (4th Street). The library, and Blarney Pub and Bar, do a google search for dinkytown bars.

Things to do depend on the day. There are some museums like Walker Art Center, Weisman museum (strange stainless steel building on campus).

As to what to see and do - what are you looking for? There are plenty of cultural options including music venues, theaters and museums. Most of those will conflict with the games, except for the museums. Like JF said, the new Twins ball park is pretty cool, the new Gopher stadium is across the street from Mariucci and you might try to get a closer look at it.

As to food, the Twin Cities don't have a signature food worth seeking out (other than Juicy Lucy burgers already mentioned by others), but there is a surprisingly vibrant foodie scene here. One possible reason being the also vibrant rehab scene with Hazeldon Clinic located here - many big city chefs have came out here for the dry-out program and stayed to contribute to the food industry.

You also might try a river cruise during the day on Saturday. There are a number of companies that run them and the colors should still be very good one is here: http://www.riverrides.com/

You'll miss the TC Marathon by a week, it's considered the most beautiful urban marathon in the country. The Gopher women play hockey Saturday afternoon next door at Ridder arena at 2 PM vs Wayne State. Most other sports are out of town that weekend. As mentioned, the Wild are in Finland then.

Have fun!

Re: Time to drop a deuce: the second MN Gopher Offseason Thread

The discussions regarding where to eat in the Twin Cities area was interesting but, did anyone else notice that Gopher hockey had a media day?

Regardless of how well the Gophers season turns out, having 10 incomming freshmen should in itself be entertaining, and we should all be excited about this:

The University of Minnesota will host the 2011 NCAA Men's Frozen Four from April 7-9 at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn.
