Haula hit hard, 5 min major and game misconduct on UBC. 5 min. pp for the Gophers.

Good warm up, nice to score some goals even on the sisters of the poor, now lets get the season started.

Fairly pleased with what I saw. A little miffed the 5 minute power play looked lethargic but only have to wait a week to see some real hockey.

I think they had checked out a bit at that point. It is obvious that they want Alt to be taking slappers from the point. They were forcing it back to him during the PPs tonight. Shot seems pretty hard, when he connected. He has some bugs to work out.

Serratore was possessed. I enjoyed watching him play.

Haula looked great as well. I was most impessed with how fast he got back on a PP miscue resulting in a UBC breakaway. Haula got all the way back and got his stick on his right when he was taking the shot, taking quite a bit off of it.

Gardiner is fast. About all I saw.

Bjugstad gets himself in the right spots a lot, but wasn't able to connect tonight.

That first period was fun to watch. A couple of those goals were really nice plays. The pass by Fairchild to Hansen on his first goal was beautiful (a zinger that went about 150 feet, right onto Hansen's stick and threaded very tightly between 2 UBC players).
It would have been nice to have seen them keep their foot on the gas all game, but I suppose that's a bit difficult in this kind of game and with so many new faces that the coaching staff is trying to get out on the ice and have a look at.

Of the freshman, the 4 that stood out to me as being ready to play at this level were Bjugstad, Haula, Condon and Serratore. The combination of Serratore and Matson on the fourth line was a delight, and looked to be the basis of something we haven't had since the Fleming/Wendel/Waibel days. If Serratore can maintain that kind of play I think he will be a regular in the line-up.

I thought Alt, Holl, and Gardiner all seemed to stand out a bit as being not quite ready. Had a hard time getting a read on Schmidt.

It's going to be interesting to see how the line-up shakes out on both a weekly and a game-by-game basis. There is going to be some real competition for playing time among some of these guys, which is something we haven't seen at Minnesota for a while.

I thought the most interesting line combo was Budish/Bjugstad/Cepis. This could be a super scoring and grit line if they click. The Gophers looked a little gassed at times in their first game but that's to be expected and yeah the PP was weak tonight. I agree with everyone on Serratore...this dude is relentless and will be popping some people this season. I think we finally found a true sniper in Eric Haula.

Granted it's only UBC (sisters of the poor...uniforms), but this team has a lot more potential than they've been given credit for. Gophers sweep UMass on Fri. and Sat.

I was working this morning while the game was going on. Can anyone tell me how the overall flow of the game went, and, some of the things the team was doing right, and, some of the things the team needs to work on? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!
