Things to do in St Paul

Re: Things to do in St Paul

Between beer and burgers, apparently the rules don't apply to things you like.

Wrong. I admitted that I like Chick Golden Light, and I should be made fun of for that.

There are rules. Sometimes I break them. And I should be ridiculed in those situations. The rules remain the same, though. :p

Re: Things to do in St Paul

St. Paul also has the best Juicy Lucy, at Shamrock's. Everyone freaks about Matt's or the 5-8, but that is just hype off of "who invented it."
I think by ShamRocks, you mean the Blue Door Pub. Nook/ShamRocks are good, BDP is amazing. Also get the cheese curds at either place, because **** they're good.

Other food/dining places:
-Bulldog Lowertown
-Boca Chica, across the river - very good Mexican food
-seconded about the University Avenue places for Vietnamese. If you don't have a car, find the 16 bus which will take you along the length of University.
-ice cream - again you'll need a car or bus, but Grand Ole Creamery (Grand Ave.) and Izzy's Ice Cream (Marshall Ave.) are both remarkably good.

Other sights:
-the Xcel :D Also, a hockey geek might want to look at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium (nee St. Paul Auditorium), where various Minnesota professional hockey teams have played.
-the aforementioned museums. Add to the list the Landmark Center, and also make sure to get up to Summit Avenue for a view of downtown and some really huge houses.
-Did we mention that the Summit brewery tour is free? I recommend the Oatmeal Stout - it's an excellent example of the type, and not available outside of the Twin Cities (keg only.) The 54 bus will get you close enough to walk there.

.
BDP is better for stuffed burgers, if that's what you want. I've tried several and never once did the word amazing come to mind. It's like they just want to see how many combos of stuff they can stuff inside a burger. The triple b and lodge burger at the Nook/Shamrocks are way better than anything at BDP. Oh, and the wait will be long and you'll probably get bumped and nudged while trying to eat ;)

Re: Things to do in St Paul

I see from the schedule that the meeting goes to the 24th so the State Fair will be going on (it starts the 23rd). It really is worth a visit. Link here: http://www.mnstatefair.org/

We are going on the 24th as we always try to go the first Friday of the fair.

Re: Things to do in St Paul

It is too bad you will probably be staying in the downtown area...the best bars in St. Paul are up on the hill. If you have the chance check out The Muddy Pig, WA Frost or The Happy Gnome.

As for the Jucy Lucy talk they are a bit overrated. That said the best menu of burgers is Shamrocks. The Blue Door sucks unless you like crappy service, claustrophobia and the smell of stale Summitt ;)

Re: Things to do in St Paul

Although he indicated a willingness to drive beyond downtown, meaning he's probably going to have a car. If so, the places you mention are very, umm, handy...

For earlier in the day, Bread and Chocolate on Grand Avenue is a bakery/cafe with good food.

Lots of great places in the Twin Cities; hope to get back soon myself.

Re: Things to do in St Paul

Back from St Paul. Didnt take my computer so I wasnt able to get on here. With the way the conference was set up I didnt get to do too much exploring. We did hit Mickey's twice. I enjoyed it when I went but my boss went another time and said it wasn't that great (poor service mostly and bad coffee...though she is a coffee snob). Went to Tanpopo which I thought was awesome. Sakura near the hotel had ok food but service was poor the night we were there. Mostly ate at places on west 7th since the conference was at the Rivercenter. Ate at Eagle Stree, Liffey, McGoverns, Burger Moes. They were ok. Also got to the Alary one night with some vendors who were buying me drinks and also bought me a shirt. Had to teach the bartender how to make an old fashioned but she did ok. All in all I the town was nice and I know that if I had the chance to get away from the area a bit more and drive around (it wasn't my car we took up and there just was no time) I might have enjoyed it a bit more. The conference was good though and I suppose that is what matters most.

EDIT: only went to places during lunch really since we had events going on in the evenings that provided food and I was trying to be cheap for the most part.

Were you there for a conference about fish? A good friend of mine from Michigan Tech, now in the EIU grad program, was up for that. Also, I would have recommended Claddagh Cafe for your boss, a little further down West 7th - Mickey's coffee kinda does suck, even though the food is good. :p

I was indeed there for the Fisheries conference.

Hey, you got one big winner (Tanpopo), that's great. RE: Sakura, we were just there recently for lunch, and service was really slow, too. And it wasn't busy. What's up with that? Anyway, glad you were able to explore, even if it was just a little.

Re: Things to do in St Paul

I have yet to find a diner that actually has good coffee. Or restaurant for that matter...

Bad Waitress (associated with Spyhouse Coffee, but has a full diner menu.) There are some others, but most of the really good places are standalone coffeehouses.

EDIT: but that's in Minneapolis. Otherwise, Nina's Coffee Cafe serves sandwiches and isn't bad - it's on Selby and Western.
