Re: The WJC Thread. USA! USA! USA!

What's that God awful, smelly, soft ooze coming into my state from the north? Perhaps a collective crapping from our neighbors from the north? Yeah, Canada will be back and the team was an awesome one. But, they still crapped the bed and will be remembered up there as an embarrassment.

Canada
USA
Finland
Czech Republic
Denmark
I think its a plus getting to play Canada in the group play when it isn't an elimination situation. Its a good barameter for where the teams at and give them a chance to realize how much harder it will be to beat them then Finland, Czech, Denmark...

Re: The WJC Thread. USA! USA! USA!

Glad to see our boys claim some hardware and it's always better to win your last game rather than finish second. Showed a lot as other U.S. teams at all levels have failed in this position.

Great win for Russia and awesome that the arrogant Canadian fans and media had to eat a healthy heap of Crow. Nothing against their players and Ellis was very stand-up afterwards.

Loved the Russian player reactions. Once they have their helmets off and the camera zooms in, you remember that these are basically kids, playing a game and having a whole lot of fun when they win. Wonderful! :)

extended until noon mountain time Thursday... the servers were overwhelmed today and went down or something.
The servers were down in the 1st and 2nd period. Would be interesting to see the number of hits from the end of the third period until noon tomorrow. :-)

Although ticket requests from Russia might be brisk.

Re: The WJC Thread. USA! USA! USA!

Back in '71 during the first super series (USSR vs Canada), almost all Americans cheered for Canada. It was then we all found out the Canadien pros were not so much better than teams in other parts of the world. As the USA program developed, it began to be common place for Canadien fans to cheer for ANY team playing the US, especially after US teams began having a bit of success (sort of like Sioux fans cheering for anyone who plays the Gophers). Well, the world has changed since '71; I was pleased as punch to see the boys from the North choke on the Big Apple (which is where I live), last night. While I still don't consider the Reds our friends and I still hope the Canadiens are, the Canadien fans deserve all the derision and humiliation which can be heaped upon them. Time to wake-up folks and realize what side of your toast the butter is on!!

Re: The WJC Thread. USA! USA! USA!

So, Don Cherry, how bout that Russian hockey? :D

Now THAT is funny !! I am going to have to DVR the whole NHL Network broadcast on Saturday night to make sure I get his comments / reaction.

Look, European hockey is just different than that played in North America. I played a year in Europe and took my first weeek just trying to figure out what the hell they were doing. I can also say that the level of my skill development that year went up exponentially. It has also been said on this or other threads that you never know who you are going to play when matched against Russia. They could come out and stink the joint up (they looked terrible during the 1st 2 periods of the Finland game and never should have won that), and then all of a sudden they are skating circles around everyone. Christ - they scored 5 unaswered against Canada in the last 1/2 of the 3rd period....that's just astounding. Someone else posted earlier that Russia winning is good for the sport and the tournament. There is no way that any of these tournaments start without Canada being considered one of the teams to beat. They are. Point is on any given night in any given year so is the US, Sweden (who I thought looked fantastic during their opening game against Canada), Russia, Finalnd, and so on. If Canada just rolls, the tourney is a stinker. There are 3+ pages of posts on just the USCHO site about the Canada - Russia game. Beautiful.

In the USA - Canada game last year, we filled up an entire thread.

Obviously last year we heard the "Americans play their junior hockey in Canada, so it was really us who won because we trained them" excuse. I don't know how many Russians play junior hockey in Canada. One thing I will say, though, is that there is someone on a video streaming website that posts each edition of Coach's Corner, so we should be able to see it on there. I wonder how many letters Mr. Cherry will receive about this.

Re: The WJC Thread. USA! USA! USA!

US actually ended up with the best overall record in the tourney, right? ;)

Actually, yes. Too bad they weren't using the 70's Olympic format where it's points that determine the winner as opposed to the bracket they use now.

I remember it got filled last year (especially for you and I RPI fans as D'Amigo was making a name for himself). That was to be expected give that this is a US College Hockey thread. My point about last nights game is that it was Canada and Russia and we filled 3 pages on a US College Hockey thread - precisely because it was a great tourney and great hockey. Great point about last year's comments and having players on the team that play in Canadian juniors, but no ability to use that excuse this year. Lets also keep our heads that there is all this traffic and because there probably was some expectation that Canada would win.

That is so awesome !! Classic ! I can only imagine the scene at the airport.... What a riot.
Right up until the hangover kicks in at Noon and they are still stuck in Buffalo's Airport.

Have to wonder if there are 30 seats available on a future flights or if they will have to fly home in small groups.

This will add some memories to the scrapbook...Seriously, what those guys did yesterday was one of the greatest comebacks in the history of international hockey. People in North America see this as Canada choking, and aren't giving enough credit to the Russians for scoring five unanswered thrid period goals on a very good Canadian team.
