Re: The WJC Thread that HOKYDOPE didn't Start. USA! USA! USA!

Here's what Julie Robenhymer (who has covered the entire camp and exhibition games) said on Twitter when someone asked her if Clendening got hurt. "I saw him limping at one point this weekend, but no. Just not the best option."
Regarding Saad- He'll probably be the first American drafted this spring, but he would have made this team as a checking line guy because he does play a power forward game. For those spots, Brown had an excellent camp and Callahan had a solid camp (and played all three forward positions). According to multiple reporters, Saad was invisible on the ice despite playing with Brown and Nelson who combined for two goals.
Regarding the NTDP- Iles, Faulk, Forbort, Merrill, Ramage, Bourque, Brown, D'Amigo, Etem, Morin, Palmeiri, Shore and Zucker all played there. That's 13 of the 22 players on the roster.

Rocco Grimaldi was Robbed!!

After watching the game last night in Rochester, I was shocked to see Grimaldi left off. Must have been his size and age that scared the coaches away.

I was also surprised to see Saad left off, but more because of what I heard about him.

Not too surprised about Clendening. He looked bad on the first Czech goal. Got burned big time on a one-on-one breakout. When I was interviewing him after the game, he looked despondent, as if he knew he was a goner.

Overall, there are a number of holes in the US game. They were inconsistent last night. Moments of brilliance punctuated with moments of poor play. And Campbell looked very shaky at times. And the last shootout goal he let in was just horrible, though I can see how that can happen even to the best of goalies. They need to improve dramatically and quickly to defend their gold. The only saving grace is they are in the "easier" bracket and can use the round-robin to improve. However, they start out with the tougher teams in their group.

Ha, thanks. Looks like it's not just us "BC dunces"...

Did last night's roster resemble a lot more of what the actual team is going to look like?

If IIRC in the RPI game, most of the guys, if not all that were cut played in that game.

Not really. And that could certainly be some of it. Along with the lines and defensive pairings constantly changing throughout the game.

Then again, we don't know how the Czech team make up was. There were a lot of Czech players sitting in the stands watching.

Tomorrow's exhibition game will certainly be a much better measuring stick.

Re: The WJC Thread that HOKYDOPE didn't Start. USA! USA! USA!

Oh, ok. Well, if he's now injured, I guess he won't be suiting up for BU in their holiday tourney?

Not sure yet.

Here's what Julie Robenhymer (who has covered the entire camp and exhibition games) said on Twitter when someone asked her if Clendening got hurt. "I saw him limping at one point this weekend, but no. Just not the best option."

So he was limping, but no he wasn't hurt? Why else would he be limping? Just for the hell of it?

When I was interviewing him after the game, he looked despondent, as if he knew he was a goner.

Maybe because he was hurt? He didn't play the second half of the game. Just out of curiosity, did you ask about that at all?

Re: The WJC Thread that HOKYDOPE didn't Start. USA! USA! USA!

Remember, these short tourneys aren't about picking the 22 best players as an all-star team. They are about picking the right players to fill certain roles. Typically, your top 6 forwards are there to score your goals. The third line are usually gritty checkers, and your fourth line are energy/versatility guys who can move up to other lines if you need it or just take shifts to give others a rest and don't get scored on.

Looking at the top six USA forwards, it was doubtful that young scorers like Grimaldi or Saad could crack that top 6 unit, especially with the older experienced pros the USA had this time around (Palmieri, Morin, D'Amigo, etc.). Ultimately, the US went with an older group. This is usually a 19 year old's tourney...

Well if he's healthy enough to play for BU, he would have been healthy enough to play for the US

So he was limping, but no he wasn't hurt? Why else would he be limping? Just for the hell of it?

My god, what is it with you on this Clendening thing? You admitted your source was wrong on a couple players, so it's not out of the question that he was never a lock and simply didn't perform well enough to be picked.

Maybe. It still doesn't mean he wasn't despondent over the thought he was not going to make the team.

a) I didn't know he was hurt
b) I was interviewing him for a feature that had nothing to do with that particular game's performance. A feature I had to nix because he didn't make the team.

Re: The WJC Thread that HOKYDOPE didn't Start. USA! USA! USA!

As a BU fan and a US hockey fan, I'm okay with Clendening not being picked. I've been pretty unimpressed with him thus far, so it's actually a good thing if we have someone for the WJC who can play better than he has.

BU doesn't play until Jan. 1. The US starts playing games that matter on Sunday. That's almost a full week's difference. He might've been ready to go Sunday. He might've been ready to go by Jan. 1 for the medal round. Or he might not have been able to go at all. Either way, with less than 12 hours from last night's game until the roster announcement, that's certainly not a risk Allain should've taken, and he didn't.

My god, what is it with you on this Clendening thing? You admitted your source was wrong on a couple players, so it's not out of the question that he was never a lock and simply didn't perform well enough to be picked.

You're right that it's not out of the question, but everyone else my source said was a "lock" made it. Obviously he could've been wrong about one guy, but we'll probably never know if Clendening would or wouldn't have made it had he not gotten hurt. I should not have said earlier that he would've made it if not for the injury. Obviously I don't know that for sure. I still think he would've, though.

Maybe. It still doesn't mean he wasn't despondent over the thought he was not going to make the team.

Fair enough. I wasn't trying to call you out or anything BTW. I was just curious if you (or anyone else for that matter) had noticed and asked him about it.

IF he was cut because of the injury concern.

BTW, I'm not here to bash your source. Doesn't really matter to me. That being said, I could have sworn you were being told that Samuelsson was a lock, no?

I was told that it looked like Samuelsson was going to make it, but never that he was a lock.

Fair enough. Things change. Just like it might have done with Clendening. Bottom line for me is, I like the defense they picked and think they got it right.

Anyone know if any WJC games are going to be online?

I know NHL Network has them, but that's not an option.
