The Ugly Helmets are going down the TUBES

Re: The Ugly Helmets are going down the TUBES

Why? Just because it's Michigan?? That might be . . . optimistic (another word comes to mind). Red played for UM; Mel played for Tech. Also, I believe Red's base salary for 2012-13 is $225,000 while Mel's is $275,000.
Wow that is surprising. i wonder what their wages come to with the bonuses and things. Plus how much cheaper is it to live in Houghton compared to Ann Arbor? Could there be a greater disparity in Michigan?

I'm just surprised they are both being paid in dollars. I thought shell casings was the accepted currency in Michigan.

"Base salary" is very misleading. I remember researching this recently, but Red makes boatloads more in other areas.

And I thought they took Loonies?

Yeah that's why I asked about "bonus pay"

MGoBlueHockey:I can't believe I'm asking this question but here it goes-
Who would Michigan go after should Red retire? I'm guessing Mel Pearson would be the #1, and then maybe Jeff Blashill as a #2?

Arpod: Mike Babcock (heard it from a U of M athletics insider...). Not sure they would get him, but intriguing nontheless.

UMICH: I've heard that too, stemming back a couple of years. Babcock has been to a lot of Michigan games over the last few years too. This year with the lock-out you'd think nothing of it but the two years prior he was also there several times.

Everyone... clearly Michigan has already hashed this out on their thread... Mike Babcock is going to leave the Red Wings to coach Michigan...duh:rolleyes:

Re: The Ugly Helmets are going down the TUBES

Yay, we have a new thread! At least someone still cares about this team.

Oh wait, it's a bunch of dolts bagging on us.

Color me surprised.

Babcock has a salary around $2 million per year thru the 14-15 season. It is among the highest in the NHL and at least four times the highest college compensation.

Re: The Ugly Helmets are going down the TUBES

There's no ax to grind. It's merely a statement of fact. It's no different than saying UM should dominate MAC schools in football or basketball.

That's ignorant. Complete apples and oranges. If that was the case, Minnesota, Wisconsin, MSU and OSU should have perfect hockey records against anyone that isn't a D1 football school. There is a distinct disparity between major D1 football and basketball talent vs. non-D1 basketball and football talent. Smaller pool/smaller number of teams for D1 hockey.

Re: The Ugly Helmets are going down the TUBES

As for ugly helmets, though I would root for THE Ohio State University any time the play Ann Arbor in any sport, their attempt to re-create their football helmets on the hockey helmets is far more visually unappealing. It's just plain bad. The blue and yellow hockey version actually works.

I know.. it only took 20+ seasons for M hockey to appear to not make the tourney. No one else has come close to that kind of streak. Add in a bunch of FF's, conference championships, 2 NC's during that time. Yeah, we really suck tubes.

Edited for a more accurate definition.

That's rich coming from the land of buffalo chips.

We actually stopped using those for currency during the Great Buffalo Chip Scare of '86, but thank you for your concern even if it is nearly 30 years behind.

It's pretty much a given it's either gonna be Pearson or longtime assistant coach Billy Powers that will get the job.

We're very cautious here about outsiders to the system coming in and coaching any of the varsity sports.

You mean like John Beilein? Kevin Borseth seemed to do a pretty good job with women's hoop too. Kim Arico came from the outside to replace him and has had success as well. Now as for that Rich Rod guy...I was sad to see him go...

I didn't say they don't work. I said people are cautious of outsiders here.

You should've heard all the people calling for Beilein's head midway through 2010-11. And then Stu Douglass hit a shot up at breslin center, and that was the turning point. As for women's basketball, the program has not been successful. At all. Any change from it's history is good change.

It will be interesting to see just where UM goes when Red does retire, and he has said he doesn't see himself coaching past the end of his current contract. Either Mel or Billy would be a very good place to start.

Well, there it is. More proof why you are called "dirty".

Yes, but the allure of becoming a Michigan Man is worth at least 1.5 million dollars.
