The Top 25 College Hockey Teams of the NCAA Era

Re: The Top 25 College Hockey Teams of the NCAA Era

I’m jumping on this thread hella late, and the domain from FS23’s earlier posts is kaput. I’ve yet to comb through all of the replies for other links.

FS23: Did you plop any of the write ups for the top teams anywhere?

Unfortunately, I think they are lost in the infinite internet tubes. I will boot up my old computer when I get a chance and see if I can find anything. However, I believe in my previous attempts I couldn't locate them. It's too bad...I spent a lot of time researching and drafting those write-ups.

Re: The Top 25 College Hockey Teams of the NCAA Era

#459 - Michigan - 56.7406 Points

The Wolverines came just short of this season's national champion Minnesota Duluth, and finished just ahead of the 1994-1995 New Hampshire squad. Michigan went 7-10-0 against NCAA Tournament competition, and was 7-7-3 in one-goal games. Their inability to dominate in close games was ultimately their downfall, as they fell in the closing seconds against Notre Dame in the National Semifinals.

While that is not an excellent ranking I'll take it. It's pretty safe to say that every Michigan fan was not expecting anything from the team this year. Just making the tournament far exceeded our expectations but to make The Frozen Four was astonishing. I know that I was more than thrilled with their performance in the second-half of the year. I wasn't even deathly depressed after we lost to notre dame (and the heartbreaking way we did) in the National Semi-Final.

This years Michigan team doesn't deserve an elite ranking but I'm still very proud of them.

What a bummer.

Sadly it does not appear that the Wayback Machine caught the actual team writeups...if FS23 does have them, I'm more than willing to host them on THG's site.
Here is the list of top 25 teams back in 2013: https://web.archive.org/web/20130122193405/http://www.collegehockeyweekly.com/Greatest-Teams.html

Re: The Top 25 College Hockey Teams of the NCAA Era

Yeah, unfortunately I don't have anything. I sent an email to the guys who ran the College Hockey Weekly site, and they didn't keep anything either.

Perhaps someday I will recreate them (or attempt to recreate them).

I was researching online and I came across another webpage capture site: archive.today. Unfortunately, it only had one of FS23's write ups, the #15 1966-67 Cornell Big Red. I assume that the page will be there "forever," but anyone interested may want to save it.

Yes, all the team writeup links on the list are dead. But there is ONE that survived >> HERE ;)

Aaron Broten's 106 points and 47 goals are still amongst the most ever scored in Minnesota history. Neal Broten took home the first ever Hobey Baker Award, and the Broten-Broten-Erickson line may have been the greatest line that ever played. One thing is for certain, this Gopher squad was one of the greatest college hockey teams of all-time.

Re: The Top 25 College Hockey Teams of the NCAA Era

Well, I'll start punching in all the data now that the season is over, and I should have an update to this thread with some rankings in the next couple of weeks. However, based on an initial look, it appears that there are three strong contenders for a top 100 season: Minnesota Duluth, Massachusetts, and St. Cloud State. I don't believe we will have any Top 50 teams, but overall it looks like a pretty strong performance in college hockey this season...and much better than last year.

Re: The Top 25 College Hockey Teams of the NCAA Era

As anticipated, it was a pretty well-rounded and strong NCAA Tournament field this season. While no team cracked the Top 25, three teams cracked the Top 100, a very impressive feat in itself.

#77 - Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs - 152.5047 Points
The Bulldogs put together their third-best season in program history, and their best National Championship campaign. UMD was a distant second in the race for the NCHC regular season title, which likely limited their ceiling in these rankings. However, Duluth more than made up for that when it came to the pressure cooker of March/April. The Bulldogs captured the NCHC Tournament championship and the NCAA National championship, becoming the first program to win back-to-back NCAA titles since conference-mate Denver in 2004-2005. All told, this season's UMD squad finished 77th, just behind the 1978-1979 Bowling Green Falcons, and a spot ahead of the 1977-1978 Denver Pioneers.

#86 - Saint Cloud State Huskies - 148.2236 Points
The Huskies had their best ever season according to this ranking. St. Cloud dominated the NCHC in record setting fashion, en route to capturing the NCHC regular season title. Unfortunately for the Huskies, they were once again snake bit in March, and unable to put the finishing bow on an otherwise incredible season. Had SCSU been able to capture that elusive first national title, they would almost certainly have been a Top 50 team, and perhaps even a Top 25 team all-time. As it stands, St. Cloud will have to settle for sitting in 86th, sandwiched between a couple of national champions: the 1964-1965 Michigan Tech Huskies at 85th, and the 2001-2002 Minnesota Golden Gophers at 87th.

#95 - Massachusetts Minutemen - 145.7614 Points
The Minutemen also put together their best ever season in program history, capturing the Hockey East regular season title for the first time. UMASS also had its first Hobey Baker winner, and swept most of the major awards in Hockey East. Massachusetts also advanced to its first ever Frozen Four, and came just short of the program's first national championship. It was a tremendous run for the Minutemen, who wind up as a Top 100 team of all-time, sitting at 95th, sandwiched between two other powerhouses that nearly captured it all, the 1978-1979 North Dakota Fighting Sioux and the 1999-2000 Wisconsin Badgers.

The Best of the Rest
#208 - Quinnipiac Bobcats: 105.5272 points
#263 - Minnesota State Mavericks: 93.256 points
#311 - Clarkson Golden Knights: 83.6004 points
#331 - Cornell Big Red: 78.8253 points
#333 - Providence Friars: 78.6332 points
#392 - Northeastern Huskies: 68.1245 points
#408 - Ohio State Buckeyes: 65.9864 points
#453 - Denver Pioneers: 59.2973 points
#483 - Bowling Green Falcons: 54.9887 points
#538 - Notre Dame Fighting Irish: 45.8362 points
#559 - Harvard Crimson: 42.1181 points
#574 - American International Yellow Jackets: 39.4202 points
#582 - Arizona State Sun Devil: 37.4402 points

Out of the 660 ranked teams, the average score is 89.4156 points, with a midpoint of right around 79 points. So we had 5 above-average teams, with 8 teams in the field basically at or above the midpoint. The average from this year's field totaled 81.2215 points, which is just below the average, but over eleven points above the average of last year's field (70.1047 points).

Re: The Top 25 College Hockey Teams of the NCAA Era

I thought this might be interesting...here are the "Top 10 Teams of the 2010s"

1. 2016-2017 Denver Pioneers - 209.325 Points (#12 overall)
2. 2015-2016 North Dakota Fighting Hawks - 206.293 Points (#15 overall)
3. 2016-2017 Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs - 194 Points (#22 overall)
4. 2010-2011 North Dakota Fighting Sioux - 192.042 Points (#24 overall)
5. 2011-2012 Boston College Eagles - 189.4434 Points (#27 overall)
6. 2015-2016 Quinnipiac Bobcats - 176.7368 Points (#43 overall)
7. 2017-2018 Notre Dame Fighting Irish - 170.95 Points (#46 overall)
8. 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - 170.7909 Points (#48 overall)
9. 2013-2014 Boston College Eagles - 155.4853 Points (#72 overall)
10. 2014-2015 North Dakota - 155.409 Points (#73 overall)

------------------------------------------------------------------
Honorable Mention:
2018-2019 Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs - 152.5047 Points (#77 overall)
2009-2010 Miami Redhawks - 149.2784 Points (#83 overall)
2018-2019 St. Cloud State Huskies - 148.2236 Points (#86 overall)
2012-2013 Quinnipiac Bobcats - 145.9547 Points (#93 overall)
2018-2019 Massachusetts Minutemen - 145.7614 Points (#95 overall)
2016-2017 Harvard Crimson - 145.4874 Points (#97 overall)
2015-2016 Boston College Eagles - 144.9792 Points (#100 overall)

A pretty impressive group. No top 10 overall teams, but:
4 in the top 25 (average decade = 3-4)
8 in the top 50 (average decade = ~7)
17 in the top 100 (average decade = ~14)

So average to above-average for the very top echelon (Top 25), and well above-average for the greatest squads (Top 100). While nobody cracked the Top 10, both Denver and North Dakota were pretty close (Denver ~ 2.25 points from Top 10; North Dakota ~5.25 points)

I believe they are at #112 overall with approximately 142 points. The "honorable mention" were the remaining teams from the decade that are currently in the Top 100. The 2014-2015 BU squad sits just outside that club.

It's interesting that only 5 of the Champions and 5 of the Runners-up made it into the top 17 for the decade.
Maybe evidence that winners of one-and-done tournaments aren't necessarily the "best" teams in a given season?
Although I will note that all but one of those 17 at least did make the Frozen Four, the exception being this year's St. Cloud State who didn't even get out of the first round.

I love this thread...

Connects us to prior Ice Ages.:D

Happy Summer!

Re: The Top 25 College Hockey Teams of the NCAA Era

Out of curiosity:

Has anyone ever back-calculated RPI, PWR, and/or KRACH rankings on historical seasons?

Like if I wanted to see a PWR from “selection” in 1982 or what-have-you…

Re: The Top 25 College Hockey Teams of the NCAA Era

I mean, if we have game data it’s just a matter of someone who can run the calcs.

full game data exists on CHN back to 1987, but it gets dicey because in that span from say 87 to 97 there were often games against D3 teams and such, which counted in a team's record. But then you'd need all the data for those teams too, and it gets hairy. Unless you just throw all that out.
