The Stock Market thread: BUY! BUY! BUY! Sell, sell, sell...

Re: The Stock Market thread: BUY! BUY! BUY! Sell, sell, sell...

I decided to pick up some ATVI. I like the financials on this company, and buying on my Fibonacci moving averages. Going to play both the dividend and the release of Starcraft II Heart of the Swarm. Once earnings come out after the game has been on the market for a quarter or so, bail original investment on the earnings news. The dividend only pays yearly, but because I think the company is fairly stable on its value for the time being, I can let the winnings stick.

Looks like today's a cash in day. Might be able to pick up a deal or two.

I decided to get back in on American Eagle (AEO). I had to dump the stock because the dividend was just too low at the time (missed the special dividend, but I probably would have put it right back in the company anyway), and the price had come up quite a bit so it was a good time to take profits. Now that I'm in a better situation and the price came back to earth, the profits (I think MAYBE a little more, but nothing sold too early) are back on the board. I know that it's usually a bad idea to come back to a company you dumped unless the financials are there, but hey, the financials are there.

DELL is coming off the market. This certainly isn't the right environment for the computing industry.

Re: The Stock Market thread: BUY! BUY! BUY! Sell, sell, sell...

Sometimes I just hate the pyramid strategy... ATVI has jumped over $1 per share on earnings reports. Previous close was around $12 per share. I couldn't get the 89 or 55 SMA. Oh well, a couple bucks earned is more than $0.

Yesterday a close of DJIA over 14k, and momentum will likely carry us until the end of April for you short term players.

Remember that, when filling out those tax returns, you only get the lower dividend rate if you hold a stock for at least 61 days within a 121-day period centered around the ex-dividend date (using actual buy/sell dates, not dates on record).

If someone's brokerage isn't sending them a 1099-DIV form, I would dump them ASAP. The forms they send out now make taxes nearly idiot-proof for the VAST majority of people.

Kirby Corp. (KEX) will replace Overseas Shipping Group in the transportation sector of the Dow Index after close of trading on the 29th.

I'm not 100% sure I like the move for my company, however I can say that through this recession, we have actually made a few major acquisitions and have done quite well in a sector that has struggled overall, IMO. I may have to look at making an additional purchase above what my 401k contributions get me with company stock.

Back when I posted this, $KEX was around $55.00 a share. Today? $74 and rising. Should have done it. Oh well.

They don't necessarily do the qualified dividend rules correctly. Heck, my brokerage lists everything as a cash dividend. They not only can't get the qualified dividends correct, but they listed some of the royalty payments as dividends. Those aren't doubly taxed.

That's your personal rule to not use your money that way.

As a general rule, it compounds your risk because you tie your regular current income and future retirement income because if anything happens with your company both can be hit.

As a general rule I don't like having more than 10% of my portfolio in any one stock (if it appreciates beyond that I sell down to 10% unless I have some strong investment thesis to hold).

Never double-dip stock with employment.

That's just silly. I put 3% of my paycheck towards buying stock in my company. THey give me a big fat discount on it and it's completely separate from my retirement.

ESP programs are different because you do get the stock at a significant discount thus limiting your total risk but you still have to be careful to keep that amount to a small amount of your total assets, regardless if it outside of your retirement accounts. 3% of your paycheck is also a fairly small amount of money annually compared to what you should be putting into your 401k & IRA.

I think you misunderstand me. A person shouldn't treat an ESPP like a retirement account. If he does, he'sgoing to get burned. Fully funding your IRA and 401k is far more important. Only then should a person consider it. It should be considered a stock account and not part of retirement.

Exactly my point. Currently I'm overloaded in oil trusts, but a large reason for that is that they are taxed differently since they aren't true equity dividends (I actually claim the royalty payments at a loss due to depletion; yes it's a tax loophole), but do trade as cap gains.

Different people will say different things. Kevin O'Leary has a 5% rule. Mark Cuban will go all in on one stock and roll the dice (and by pure theoretical statistics, that does give you the best chances for maximising revenue). It's your money, so do what you wish.

Re: The Stock Market thread: BUY! BUY! BUY! Sell, sell, sell...

Wow, ATVI and AWR are kicking some serious rear right now! This time of year, I can't really fortify my stock positions; pretty much have to wait for Q3 or the beginning of Q4. Oh well, royalty trusts are always a good place around this time of year, since the oil prices jump.

BTW, is anyone out there invested in REITs? Be aware the dividends are unqualified so you have to pay full rate on them, however the reason they are unqualified is because the earnings are not actually taxed.

Dude; I have some REITs and a couple of REIT preferreds. Totally for the yield but they are also appreciating a bit. But I keep those in my Pension plan only for the very reason you stated.

Dow may have set a "record", but DO NOT BE FOOLED! Many companies aren't even close to their '07 levels.

FDude-I supect this is not a bubble-it is a balloon that is very overinflated right now. I just do not know when the pin will hit it.;)

It seems it hit the record despite the gloom and doom of sequester
