The States: Why does Minnesota wanna be Kansas?

Re: The States: Why does Minnesota wanna be Kansas?

Well, look at this:

http://www.startribune.com/bond-rating-agencies-give-minnesota-top-marks/489186601/

Two bond-rating agencies gave Minnesota top marks Wednesday, confirming that the state is in good financial health 10 years after the Great Recession.

"Our state government has made a complete financial turnaround in the past 7½ years," Gov. Mark Dayton said in a statement. "The credit for Minnesota's success belongs to the people of our state. I thank Minnesotans for their many contributions to the strength of our economy and the stabilization of our State's budget."

Standard & Poor's and Fitch both gave Minnesota its highest rating, AAA, while Moody's Investors Service continued to rate Minnesota at Aa1, its second-highest rating. A higher bond rating means Minnesota can borrow money for projects at a lower interest rate, saving taxpayer dollars.

Dayton, a Democrat, has emphasized the need to bolster the state's reserves and improve its fiscal health during his past two terms. He and Management and Budget Commissioner Myron Frans recently visited the bond-rating agencies to make their case, highlighting a bill passed this year that overhauls the state's pension system and puts Minnesota on a more stable path to provide benefits for retirees and public workers.

Both S&P and Fitch downgraded Minnesota a notch in 2011, the year Dayton took office. Minnesota was still struggling with the aftershocks of the Great Recession when the agencies lowered its bond ratings. At that time, the state's reserves were empty and it was facing a $6.2 billion deficit, according to the Dayton administration.

Former Gov. Tim Pawlenty, the Republican who led the state before Dayton and is now running again for his old job, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

That's because Tim Pawlenty destroyed the bond rating while he was governor.

Yeah that is not something he wanted to see as he tries to fight and claw his way to the MNGOP Nom. He doesnt want any reminders to how bad he screwed us up the last time.

Michigan Supreme Court allows the anti-gerrymandering reform measure to stay on the ballot in November. State GOP has been fighting to keep it off for months.

Huh. That's a kick in the pants to the state GOP. These things usually pass via ballot initiatives even in rightish states (AZ, FL).

Only matters if we vote, but between that and the weed proposal, the GOP is in a much tougher spot when it comes to suppressing left-leaning voter turnout.

Lake County, IL? There's something in the water up there regarding sexual predators.

Typical. However the door swings both directions. The tweet seems to lean one direction. This is why Democrats will continue to lose.

The tweet swings one way because that's the narrative we keep hearing from people around here as well as from the party elite, not to mention we can see the DCCC doing that as well with who they choose to give funds to. And to be fair they have far more power than any one single voter.

That said I'm not gonna defend anyone who abstained, voted green party, or voted for Trump in 2016. Those people are idiots that goes without saying.

The Bernie Voters walked out on Hillary. The only narrative is this. Whoever wins the primary gets my vote. Period. And that's the way it should be for everybody. As long as it isn't we're going to have tax cuts for the rich, global warming up the ***, and rising health care costs, no access to abortion, etc. etc. etc.

The GOP doesn't have this problem. Never has.

Re: The States: Why does Minnesota wanna be Kansas?

I really don't see a deluge of "centrists" abandoning lefty Dems yet. AOC will win her seat easily and beyond that Dems seem to be enthused about Stacy Abrams in Georgia for example based on the latest polling showing a close race down there. If there's another high profile contest that a Sanders-like nominee has won but is getting pushback from moderate Dems going into the general election let me know because I'm curious about it.

Re: The States: Why does Minnesota wanna be Kansas?

The Maryland Gov race in that tweet is the example being used.

Ah, couldn't access the tweet. I'm not sure if the problem is Jealous' progressivism or Hogan's overall popularity. Here in Mass is a similar situation. Lizzy Warren is going to kill it in her re-election, and those same voters are going to send GOP Gov. Charlie Baker to a landslide victory over his little known Dem challenger. Can't speak directly to the Maryland situation however.

Re: The States: Why does Minnesota wanna be Kansas?

IDK, it sounds like Jealous won his primary fairly easily and you'd hope the party would give them its full backing. But as we've seen in other instances the party doesn't always support candidates and it's pretty clearly for ideological reasons at this point.

Anyhow this was the article the guy who was retweeted linked to: https://t.co/yAw9vZjG9Z

I don't think she has much of a chance but given how badly she's being outspent, how seriously Cuomo is taking the election, and the fact that his stances on certain issues have shifted ever so slightly to the left, that in itself is a win.
