Rebuttal: Utah.

The entire West, except a narrow urban strip on the coast, has the same problem. It's the most beautiful place in the country, and among the most beautiful in the world, and is populated by the secondmost* stupid people in the country, if not the world.

It's still beautiful. The (barely) human infestation does not detract from that.

Depending on the metric and/or study you look at, Idaho is certainly giving the south a run for its money. Dead last in education spending, and I've seen at least one study that ranked us the "stupidest" state in the country. Living here now for almost 7 years I certainly can't argue against that ranking. But yeah, it is pretty. My company brought in a bunch of new technicians from out of state over the past few years. All of them came in with Bachelor's at the least. Some with Masters. Several labor crew type folks wondered out loud why there wasn't more promoting from within and why the techs and new out-of-state folks were also getting promotions into management positions. I just kind of looked at them like "are...are you serious?" (I was the 1st of the new crop of educated people they brought in as a technician and then further promoted to management; this is in the fish farming industry, a pretty major industry in the area).

And Alaska is quickly working towards that as well. Probably faster soon enough as we’re destined for a fairly far-right Legislature this fall.

LOL. This is so true of VA and NC. The local yokels are beyond p-ssed off they are passed over year after year by every crop of fresh young things that fall off the Ivy conveyor belt and move down from Syracuse to escape the slush. Meanwhile, the local idea of a fine education is either a tech MOS from the army, a lab slave degree from VA Tech, or the occasional moneyed blonde from Duke who flashes Olde Family trim to get a tokenist promotion (to be fair, this still works in my ultra-aggro industry).

I am surprised by this. I genuinely thought of Alaska as a completely different world where people were not so much left or right but just plain weird.

For example I thought it was extremely environmentally conscious which is the opposite of the right wing dumbsh-t. I also thought they did not care about your skin color as long as you were freezing to death next to them, which again gets you booted from the GOP.

Oil company profits are to be protected above all else, followed by Permanent Fund Dividend payments to people. Given that, gerrymandering, and the general insanity of the GOP, and you have Alaska’s current political situation.

Gerrymandering? I thought all of Alaska's Members were statewide?

The UP is 30% of the State of Michigan's land mass, yet has 3% of Michigan's population.

Unless the cost of iron ore and copper skyrockets, the State of Superior would be an economic welfare state that would make Alabama look like California.

*edit* One former Michigan lawmaker tried (jokingly?) pushing for the State of Superior, and its oft mentioned in conjunction with some Northern Wisconsin and Northeastern Minnesota counties as joining together to form the state.

Realistically, never happening. Downstate will continue to fund the UP, and Yoopers will continue to b*tch about downstate-ers getting all the state funding.

If they want the Red parts of Northern Minnesota I am fine with it. Canada might hate that whole part of the order though :-p ;)
 
Alaska Division of Elections sends out ballots with wrong name on them.

Suzanne LaFrance, a registered nonpartisan, is the Democratic nominee for House District 28, running against Republican James Kaufman and independent Benjamin Fletcher for the seat currently held by Rep. Jennifer Johnston, R-Anchorage. However, on the ballots emailed out, in place of LaFrance’s name was the name of the previous Democratic candidate Adam Lees, who withdrew from the primary August 31 and was replaced by LaFrance.
