The States: North Dakota is Still the Worst

Re: The States: North Dakota is Still the Worst

trix and Scoobs, IMHO you guys are too focused on instant gratification. Okay so Goopers fled the state with 5 days left in the legislative session. A quick look at Ballotpedia says that the Oregon legislature can call a special session when a majority of the House and Senate agree. Do you see a solution here? Call a special session in 6 days from now until the end of the year and then reintroduce the bill at the beginning.

*** are you talking about?

I've been waiting over 20 years. I'd say longer but I don't think I really figured it out until then.

Re: The States: North Dakota is Still the Worst

The problem is the way the democrats were previously talking it sounded like they abandoned the issue altogether. If they haven't done that and rather, went through the process to force it to a vote, then I have no gripe with them.

Re: The States: North Dakota is Still the Worst

Cause Democrats believe in Government. You only get away with playing Hardball if you have nothing to lose. And, Republicans never have anything to lose. Just consider what they whine about, put it in context, and ask yourself if they actually are whining about something that matters. They aren't. And that's why all or nothing works for them so well.

in 2011 Dems did the same thing in Wisconsin when something like 14 D legislators fled the state to avoid having a quorum to vote on Walker's budget repair bill, which eviscerated public unions' collective bargaining powers. The law was eventually passed, and I don't recall how the Rs got around the quorum issue.

I remember that. I think it's childish no matter who does it.

Dems are losing in both cases. That's the problem.

As I recall, it was the "budget" aspect of the bill that required the presence of the Senators. I think the R's slightly changed the bill, or maybe just claimed it didn't affect budget items at all, and passed it without the presence of the D Senators. But I think there were subsequent challenges in court on that issue.

I think at the same time Democrats in Indiana did the same thing, although apparently there is a long history of these types of maneuvers dating back more than a century. I think it's kind of funny, although a mostly futile gesture. As a legislator do you really just want to shut down the legislative process because you lack the votes to block a bill? It seems to me effective legislators do what they can to try to minimize the "damage" of the bill through negotiations. I guess it's a hazard of the my way or the highway approach to government we now have.

I can remember many instances of this in state legs off the top of my head. IIRC there was a scandal during the Dubya admin where Dems in I wanna say TX went into hiding and the TX GOP wanted to use DHS to hunt them down. Even Dubya's hack lawyers said, "um... no."

It's one of those maneuvers that makes news and pols love news. I have no idea whether it has ever worked other than to get on the cycle but after all... that is the point of it.

I don't think we'll see it in North Dakota. You flee the capitol in Bismarck for the nearest out of state refuge, you probably end up in Mobridge, SD.

I think I'd just take the azz-kicking in the vote.

Gotta make that make full PFD payment to satisfy those campaign promises.

This upcoming special session will be fun.

Not when they get the money...
Pretty much. The rubes don't care too much about anything else except the ability to buy a new TV every October and to not have to pay taxes.

(Although we have to pay Federal Tax on them anyway)

Re: The States: North Dakota is Still the Worst

I know there are going to be replies that "bUt ThE dEmS dO iT tOo!"

... and they do, but it's still wrong either way.

Also, boy does that chart make it easy to see.

Re: The States: North Dakota is Still the Worst

Rethugs would still lose Maryland and Jersey even if the lines were redrawn, so it's no loss to the Dems if gerrymandering gets fixed.

And for every state the Dems do do it in, the GOP does it in 4, so yeah I'll take the net. And, you know, it's the right thing to do and all.
