The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

Re: The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

The state Democratic org is dead in the water. Can't foresee anything less than an Republican sweep of the state gov't in 2018. The only positive thing going is that two years of Trumper horsedung in Washington should aid Stabenow in getting a 4th term in the Senate.

It doesn't help that state (and federal for that matter) election processes in general favor the GOP...how else can one explain there being more democratic supporters in the country, but the GOP runs most states and the federal government.

But I think MI, OH, WI and possibly PA are gone in the long run. For the first time, it appears that liberal mobility is hammering politics in the rust belt.

We also authorized the hunting of wolves. But Flint STILL doesn't have clean water.

How many people in Flint didnt vote in the last election?

They got no one to blame but themselves.

Re: The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

Sounds like an awesome idea to me. With a $15 minimum wage and 12 weeks paid leave, New York is doing a lot of things right lately.

If you think it's that awesome, put your money where your mouth is and come live in the state.

To that point, why are you living in NY? It seems like you'd be a lot happier a few miles west, living in Ohio or even northeast PA than the Evil Empire State.

Re: The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

Iowa is about to go half Kansas starting today. The only thing keeping it from going full Kansas is that the Stache recognizes it'd be bad to cut taxes with a budget deficit. The state legislature is going full speed ahead on that front, though, so remains to be seen what will happen, especially if the Stache leaves for China before the end of the session, since the lieutenant governor is a tea party nut job..

Abortion, unions, and religious freedom are all on the table as priorities. Oh, and a water quality bill that will screw over city slickers in favor of the farmers. Because why should farmers have to pay for their run off that pollutes drinking water for the state's largest metro area.

Good. The voters should get what they voted for. I'm disappointed they're not getting the tax cuts they deserve.

Yup. You bought it Iowa, so now own it. I have zero sympathy for these people. Obama won Iowa easily, so either a bunch of people decided to go full on knuckledragger over the last 4 years, or a bunch of lefties didn't bother to vote (given that Trump won the state with less votes than Obama got in 2012, I'm guessing Dems just got lazy...again). Either way, don't want to hear any complaints. Its not like being a liberal in Mississippi where you're always going to be outnumbered.

Eventually you'll run out of "tax money" to steal from the populace.

Don't care that much about what happens south of the border. But I do about north of the border. I'm hoping that a) Dayton keeps a lid on it b) Trump backlash gets us a local riptide back in 2020.

We need a riptide in 2018. If Trump turns out to be the disaster we all expect him to be, then 2018 is the time to strike back in statehouses and the House of Reps (Senate is a tough field next go around).

This, in spades.

The thing the GOP doesn't realize is that for thirty years the Democrats have stopped them from committing suicide by actually implementing the far right agenda. With us now powerless, there is nothing to stop them from blowing their own head off.

"Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake." The Democrats should unanimously vote NO to every one of these measures from destroying Obamacare and Medicare to privatizing Social Security and whatever godawful Sharia Pence comes up with, and get on the record on the right side of history. Then swoop in and attack ferociously when the measures pass and the country becomes a hellhole for everyone with less than $10M in the Caymans.

That will be something different I guess. Last time they had total control we were nice. Never again.

Well, nice again someday, but only after the right is housebroken.

When Dems govern, Republicans sabotage. When Republicans rule, Dems compromise. That is what must change. There can be no more negotiating with terrorists.

Just don't pull what the establishment did post-2010. ;)

Re: The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

Lawmakers are considering ending daylight savings time in Michigan.

Love my state, I can't stand its government.

This is still a thing? My dad sent a note to the chief rep of the legislation who was bawling about "states rights" on time zones, saying something to the effect of, "Would be great if you boys cared about something actually relevant, like mental health."

There's a lot of talk about just ending it period.
