The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

Re: The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

There's a lot of talk about just ending it period.

It'd be better if they just kept it year round. Virtually everyone would want the extra light in the evening versus the early morning.

What is that supposed to mean? Eastern and Western Standard/Daylight Time? Merge MT and CT into Western and Eastern respectively?

I like how India handled it, with one time zone set at the half-hour. Probably not feasible here though.

Not ending timezones, just not having DST.

Though personally I'm all for just going to GMT -- for that matter, going to a decimal-based time system and getting rid of hours, minutes and seconds which are arbitrary.

I'm not as convinced. It makes complete sense for Arizona, where they definitely don't want that extra hour of evening daylight in June, July, August, or September.

Otherwise, I have no problem with DST, and I fail to see why so many others do.

I will second going to UTC!!

EDIT: On second thought that makes my job easier too, so I second it all...

Lawmakers are considering ending daylight savings time in Michigan.

Love my state, I can't stand its government.

I'm guessing daylight savings would be one of those deals where if it were dropped, most people would say 'oh yeah, now I see why we did it'.

Sometimes governments/businesses just think...'well, we don't know what to do, but we've got to do something so let's do X'...as in push for a change that has no need and provides no benefit. Hence legislation to get rid of daylight savings time.

Hawthorne Effect. People will change their behavior upwards for a while, then eventually blame the change for a zillion unrelated or pre-existing issues.

This is still a thing? My dad sent a note to the chief rep of the legislation who was bawling about "states rights" on time zones, saying something to the effect of, "Would be great if you boys cared about something actually relevant, like mental health."

Please, please, please end the need to switch to DST. Preferably, move to DST permanently. I'd rather have an extra hour in the evening.

I've also seen a wacky proposal to merge ET and CT, and set the time to be the difference between ET and CT (ie: ET - 30 minutes, CT + 30 minutes = new Right Coast Time), merge PT and MT, and set their time to also split the difference (new Left Coast Time). Two national time zones. Two hour difference between coasts.

Make local time a continuous function calculated from the sun being at your local zenith set to noon. Recalculate all times every second (the zenith point will process slightly, thus correcting for the loss / gain between days).

Make local time fun again.

For anything requiring synchronizing to a specific time, just use UT, but recalculate the prime meridian to be something more scientifically objective.

The original idea behind the time zones was that for every 15 degrees of longitude you'd have a new time zone. The idea works great from a math perspective, but becomes all messed up when political maps get overlaid, and even more so when business moved from being local to regional to national, creating even more pressure to mess around with the time zone boundaries.

Re: The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

I've never once had an issue with time zones and I deal with several of them for work purposes. Not sure why it's so h-r-d.

Re: The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

"Do the needful" is an Indian (dot, not feather) expression essentially meaning "Do what is needed" or, in 'Murican, "git r dun."

Technically it's Olde English, but was abandoned in pretty much every English-speaking country except India in the early 20th century. It has now become a bit of a nationalistic stereotype to associate the phrase with the country.

The railroads would disagree.
