The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

Re: The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

AFAIK States have to balance their budgets and they have to pay their bills. They can't just print money like the Feds can.

Most states have a balanced budget requirement in their state constitutions, but there's nothing at the federal level declaring states can't run budget deficits. There's nothing prohibiting those remaining states from borrowing money to cover their operating shortfalls other than simple fiscal responsibility. Just ask California...

Feds have either an appropriation or a continuing resolution or they shut down. Apparently this does not apply to the fine state of IL.

Nothing ever applies to the State of Illinois.

There have been bills passed to keep a good portion of funding going, but with this now reaching over a year of d*ck waving by the political leaders, more agencies are taking notice. Chicago Public Schools are threatening to not open this fall. Suburban school districts are talking of consolidating to save money. Municipalities aren't performing schedule public works projects in an effort to save money for the fall/winter.

And John Q. Public doesn't give two sh*ts because he isn't affected by this.

Re: The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

The State of Illinois is approaching 12 months without the 2016 Fiscal Budget, and is now closing in on not having a 2017 Fiscal Budget.

No budget for 2017 has been presented to the governor with mere days remaining before the new budget would kick in.

God, between Illinois and Kansas, I'm not entirely sure which one is more of a pee-pee-soaked, heck hole.

Since not even a stop gap budget has been proposed, Illinois DOT head is now joining the game of chicken and claiming all State construction work will be halted July 1st. Depending how close the deadline comes, construction companies could start layoffs June 30th.

Meh. I wonder which (plural) of the directional schools they'll be closing. I believe Eastern Illinois is on the clock and Western Illinois is nervous.

Most are just looking at layoffs and cuts to their budgets. The only university that was affected the hardest was Chicago State University, which cancelled spring break so it could end the semester faster and close the doors quicker for the summer.

EIU's president has already said they're opening this fall, but may need to make some big cuts before the fall depending how long the budget impasse drags on.

That's pretty much a mercy killing.

Texas nationalists are watching Brexit in hopes that a similar approach can be applied for Texit. If so it could easily find itself invaded by Mexico. It would be ironic to see an inspiring independent Texas become Mexico's newest province.

Why would Mexico invade a Republic of Texas?
