The States. It's 10th Amendment or bust!

Re: The States. It's 10th Amendment or bust!

The Democrat won the special election in WA SD-45, so the WA State Senate has flipped from R to D control. Dems now have a clean sweep of state house, senate and governor there.

Across the entire west coast. I guess we need an updated "United States of Canada vs. Jesusland map.

I hate being in Jesusland and am jealous of Virginia for maybe the only time in my life.

This would be so fun if it could carry over to next fall too.

PS The new Virginia governor is a complete dork and a personality black hole.

The dirt and shrubs 80% of VA is still Jesusland. This state is basically the US writ large: a vast backwater of unemployed fundy crackers counterbalanced by a handful of gated oases of literate, employed liberals who generate all the tax dollars.

It's going to be an interesting moment someday when the liberals look at the demographics and say, "Yeah. F-ck welfare!" and the conservatives say "Wait, what!?"

It would but it's going to take a ton of work in the teeth of an enormous voter suppression push.

One thing this is doing: since the GOP doesn't seem to be getting the message that they are on a lethal trajectory, their double-down on TEH BROWN FEAR is going to make Latinos the next blacks (85/15 D). The difference is, blacks were never more than 15% of the population. Latinos are headed towards a 40% plurality.

Thanks for rover’ing us :p

Boring candidate too. He was in the Gore/Kerry/Clinton mold. I doubt this means a boring Democrat could win the White House in 2020, but it might mean that any competent Democrat could win in a lot of places if they just run a nice clean, logical campaign. That's a good sign.

My main political show thought Gillespie as well. A lot of people didn't see this coming.

Re: The States. It's 10th Amendment or bust!

2020 is a long ways away. Focus on winning 2018.

I'm sure they will. And 2018 is looking good. The best thing about last night is the Democrats made inroads in the areas that they have failed the most. City and State government.

Re: The States. It's 10th Amendment or bust!

So you won states that went Hill-dawg. No one to blame now. Or are you still going to blame your predecessor for the first few years of the term?

But the vast majority did.

From the NY Times.

Maine voters approved a Medicaid expansion in direct defiance of Republican Gov. Paul LePage, and as a show of support for the Affordable Care Act.

That's a big deal.

Looking at the VA county vote totals. Basis did not change. Dems won the cities and the DC suburbs (which is getting bigger and bigger) while GOP won the rural (flyover?) counties. What appears to be the key was the Dem voters were motivated to vote in 2017.

Let's see what happens in a year with a mini national referendum on which way the country is headed.

Yep. There was only a sliver of change overall. Suburbia though went heavy Dem and I heard that all the missing women from 2016 were in line at the polls. Ed appeared to hold on non-college whites and Men.
