The Showdown Behind the Mall - Cadets/Spartans Friday 2-11

Re: The Showdown Behind the Mall - Cadets/Spartans Friday 2-11

No word yet. I don't think we'll hear anything about it until next season.
You could save keystrokes by not responding to him. He is never going to get it, and will ask the same thing over and over like it is everybbody BUT St. Mikes anws St. A's fault.

Re: The Showdown Behind the Mall - Cadets/Spartans Friday 2-11

Let me take another spin on having an Eastern team in the Primelink --

With the death of the interlock, the ECAC-E will play 4 conference games that do not count towards the selection criteria. Why play, or have the possibility of playing, another non counter?

Which is probably why Elmira ended up in next year PL rather than a Western team, and I bet there won't be a Western team in the NSB tournament either.

Re: The Showdown Behind the Mall - Cadets/Spartans Friday 2-11

As to the Primelink it really is Primelink's call ... Primelink is a New York based Telephone and Internet provider ... they do not need another Vermont team in the tournament ... nothing against Castleton ... from Primelink's business perspective there would be a lot more value in having a Skidmore in the tournament than a Castleton (Although clearly Skidmore's Rink would kill that idea too).

Here you go again talking about the 4th team of the Prime link.I thought Hawk had rode this horse dead 4 times already oveer the last 2 years. Now it starts up agian, can we please stop this now before Hawk starts FOAMING AT THE MOUTH:D:D:D. Oh by the way Hawk have you picked out your GREEN OUTFIT for the weekend. If you have not misplaced you green UVM hat, then you can wear that with your green Packers jacket.

Well, remember, those two schools have one more year to get D-III classified or they are out.
Not quite. They have to get the games played by D-II schools to count towards D-III selection. There are two ways to do that:
(a) reclassify downwards, but, IIRC, that is a 4 year process with the 1st two years in "probation"
(b) get a national collegiate championship at D-II/III.

(a) takes the whole school out of the NE-10 and into the GNAC(???). That takes conference votes and NCAA mandated stuff
(b) takes 3 pieces (I think) of legislation. One @ D-II and one @ D-III to establish an NCC in men's ice hockey, and one piece to lower the amount of athletic schollys for mens ice hockey to 0.

Dunno which one is easier, but time is running out.

We now return to the snowball fight....

I think plan b) is doable, but the involved schools need to get cranking. Another benefit - the NE10 hockey conference plus the ECAC W = 1 Pool B spot, which would be a plus for the ECAC W

AQ's under a NCC = 6 teams. Still no Pool B. :)

I would think that if the ratios worked like they did for a DIII tournament, you would have a total of 77 teams (still 11 teams in the tournament since it takes 78 to get to 12), and AQ for ECAC E, NE, MASCAC, NESCAC, SUNYAC, MCHA, MIAC, and NCHA (a total of 8, encompassing 66 teams for an access ratio of 1:8.25 there would be 4 NE 10 teams and 5 ECAC W teams, just enough for a Pool B, because 8 wouldn't be enough, but 9 would be.)

If thing work differently for an NCC, I retract my comment.

Yes, but Joe has a point. If only 6 teams is required for an AQ in a NCC, what in the world would stop St. Mike's and St. Anselm from jumping to their NE10 brethren, and fighting for that AQ?

I think this game is the biggest sporting event Rutland has ever had. Castleton has never been considered good at anything let alone sports until this years team has put them on the map. Growing up and playing hockey in this state it is somewhat suprising how little Northfield and Middlebury youth hockey is involved with the college teams and those are some of the weakest programs in the state in regard to youth hockey. Rutland has done a great job getting behind this team and making the youth teams (named the Jr. Spartans) apart of it all.

I don't think the score matters at all, I just think the fact that two teams in the top 5 in the country playing in Rutland is great for the state but also great for the Rutland hockey community as they have never had a chance to get behind a winning sports team in this area or in sothern vermont in general.

I look forward to a great game, with two very accomplished teams. My prediction (im not expert) is that Norwich has more talent and (especially the sophmore class) but Castleton is tougher and more productive on special teams. Castleton uses a sell out wild home crowd for the edge in a 4-3 finish. Norwich, given an easy schedule in their last 3 games will still compete for the division because Castleton has to face Middlebury and Williams in their final weekend.

The end of the interlock certainly doesn't make the West look any more tantalizing as a Primelink contender, and I think it's a confluence of this and the desire for non-conference opponents noted by Jerry that makes the ECAC-W a no-brainer as the fourth team. To provide a quick summary of the options mentioned:

-Western teams: understandably weak fan support given the distance, very little upside for the two teams they play under the current selection process

- Castleton: Norwich is already guaranteed at least two conference games against them starting next season, Plattsburgh might make them a long-term replacement for the Elmira game they've dropped, Middlebury pretty much openly dislikes the program

- Elmira (and other ECAC-W members): would be crazy to turn down two (usually) quite valuable non-conference games, stronger fan support than the West can draw; from the Platt/Midd/Wich standpoint, the three permanent members can more or less put five names in a hat and know they'll pick a solid fourth, allows access to high-quality opponents without getting stuck in reciprocating agreements that produce high travel costs (I know this last one sucks, and plays on the scheduling needs of ECAC-W teams, but it's the reality of the situation)

Seems like a home run to me.

After seeing the first NU/Castleton game, I never thought it would get to this level. Good on them ... however, they won't win this one
