The scores of Saturday 1/16/10 - Who's going to punt football for hockey?

Re: The scores of Saturday 1/16/10 - Who's going to punt football for hockey?

If Norwich didn't have those ties to Potsdam and Colby, you have to wonder if they'd be the #1 team in the nation ahead of Oswego :p

Anybody can play what if
If the stats inputter at Plymouth State had looked at the names on the scoresheet instead of the numbers, my son would not be wondering if his medical redshirt request just went down the crapper. (SIGH!)

UW Eau Claire 5

Blugolds go 4-6 on the power play, SNC goes 1-9. EC's other goal was a shorty.

Slightly incorrect scoresheet

Hopefully, the NCAA will look into more than erroneous scoresheets when deciding on that request (you know there's a problem when a player is written in as a skater and a goalie).

On the bright side, James gets an assist added to his stats.

Also, Nichols beat Worcester State 5-4.

Elmira 3-0 over Cortland State...they are playing as well as anyone in D3...would love to see my two teams in Lake Placid...

Oswego would still be ahead of them because the CCCP sucks;) :p

Tell that coach that if he wants his star goalie to be there next year, he'll stop putting in anybody with James' number! I'm sure if he realized the complications, he'd fix it immediately (or at least prevent it from getting worse). So, just tell him, see if he does anything.

Re: The scores of Saturday 1/16/10 - Who's going to punt football for hockey?

Collegehockeystats fixed it. Thanks to the Plymouth SID Ken Cherrington.

Cards - James is not the star goalie, he is a goalie. A pretty good one, IMO :), but to say that he is the star is unfair to Sam Avione and the rest of the Vikings. It's still a team game and nobody wins or loses a game by himself.

Cardinals looking for revenge (Plattsburgh Press-Republican article from 1/12/10)

It's still a team game -- goalies don't score goals and depend on the rest of the team to put the puck in the opposite net and to make sure the shots at them are low risk shots. A dominant team does both while others may excel in one and be weaker in the other.

A team is only as good as the goalie behind them and the goalie is only as good as the team in front of him. All a team asks for a goalie is to put them into a position to win the hockey game. All a goalie asks is that his team clean up his mistakes and bury the puck at the other end.

A goalie can have a 50 save performance and lose 2-0. People may say he played a great game, but he missed two and gets hung with the loss. Conversely, he could stop 20, let in 5, and still win 6-5. In the former, the team suffered, in the latter, the team team succeeded.

In the end, all that matters is who won and who lost. Individual stats don't matter when the season is judged on W's and L's.

Elmira won 3-0 over Cortland.

Darren McDonald made his first career start for the Soaring Eagles and picked up a shutout and the win.

Casey Tuttle didn't start at all this weekend as Bolin got the start yesterday against Potsdam. Nice to get Casey a weekend off and still pick up two wins.

12-3-1...not too shabby heading back into the ECAC West.

Once again, If Elmira didnt have that loss to Morrisville, you have to wonder if they'd be the #2 team in the nation right behind Oswego.

I thought McDonald had the loss vs Morrisville?

Elmira had their hands full, the loss of Willard and Vailancourt really showed tonight. Once they settled down, game over. Cortland has few "Goons" numbers 9,15 & 19.

19 is the brother of Buffalo Sabre Pat Kaleta - so that should be no surprise.

Alas, in aggregate, it is a team game, but a team that starts with its goalie; a hot goalie can steal an occasional win (and conversely loose a game that otherwise would have been won). An off night for the goalie and the players start squeezing their sticks to tight and begin trying too hard, a good night and it opens up the offensive to do their thing. I agree, you need a team to win, but without a sufficient goalie, the season is not going to be pretty.

I apologzie Jim. Good catch! You are correct McDonald was saddled with the loss against Morrisville but IMHO on not fault of his really. The team in front of him let him down that night.

Were Willard and Vaillancourt ejected from the Potsdam game? Is that why they couldn't play?

Still no Schrank this weekend too right?

Re: The scores of Saturday 1/16/10 - Who's going to punt football for hockey?

Norm, what the heck are you talking about?

He's trying to downplay the impact of someone he knows personally, and you're *argueing* with him?

Schrank is done for the rest of the year

I don't mean it to be "arguing", I do agree hockey is a team sport, and a good team can save a goalie's bad night and conversely. But in all my years of watching DIII hockey, the goalie's success has defined the team's confidence and effectiveness.

****.

That sucks. Tough loss for Elmira. That kid is animal on the puck and around the net. Very tough to move.

Get better soon Rick and hopefully we'll see you next year fully healthy.

With a healthy Rick Schrank I'd be much more confident of Elmira's chances making it to Placid. But they've played without him all season and been pretty successful so we'll see.

No Schrank, he's done for the year. My understanding is that he will retain one year of eligibility.
I was on the opposite side of the arena so I couldn't tell but I think Willard was the one wearing a cast/splint on his finger.
Vailancourt? He should be back for Leb.Val. this coming weekend. NO he was not ejected, as far as I know
