The Religion Thread: A Believer-Atheist Alliance

Re: The Religion Thread: A Believer-Atheist Alliance

I have a "Charlie Brown" tree - about 2.5 ft and pre-lit. It was a gift. I put it out to satisfy my family that I still give a rip.

Re: The Religion Thread: A Believer-Atheist Alliance

Even if I did know, I'm not putting a tree up this year. My cats will totally knock it over.

Cat in the tree pics is one of the best parts of putting one up. :)

Also, you'd be surprised. Kitty's balance is so amazing that she will probably keep the **** thing upright. I have watched my cats ride them like surfboards, as long as they start from the base and move upwards along the trunk. The only time you're at risk is if the cat stands firmly on the ground and reaches up to pull the lights. Then you're screwed because the cat does not give a crap, he's after the mouse he KNOWS is at the end of the cord.

that may be fine for cats, but it doesn't work for toddlers. Mrs. Les nailed it (no pun overtly intended). Tree stands aren't enough. We do pretty much what she does, except it is green twine and a picture hook behind the tree where you can't really see it.

With two toddler grandchildren (19 & 16 mos), we've take the steps to leave the bottom 2 feet of the tree without ornaments.

Between our toddlers and our dog, we once resorted to a playpen -- for the tree, not our toddlers.

We will have the opposite situation this year. Our grandkids are going to "help" us decorate the tree. I suspect ALL the ornaments will be in the bottom two feet.

This is brilliant!

10 foot tree in my livingroom and so far the cat hasn't tipped it over. No fishing line or anything. After I get it straightened in the stand I push the tree from a few different directions. I look to tip it enough to lift one side of the stand at least and inch off the ground but not have it tip completely over.

Re: The Religion Thread: A Believer-Atheist Alliance

I find this a good way to bring the tree into the religious aspect of Christmas. If one of the kids or the cat tips the tree over, it means that God is punishing us for something--most likely too much Holiday partying or greed. If a tree went down, I usually figured we were lucky if one of the colored bubblers didn't burn the house down, with the way we like to enjoy good booze and open presents.

Today in derp; a Christian college suspends a professor because she repeated the theological fact that Christians and Muslims both worship the same God (the God of Abraham). That apparently violates the college's Statement of Faith.

Does holding tenure at Wheaton not mean the same thing as it does at other universities?

Re: The Religion Thread: A Believer-Atheist Alliance

Other than the minor dust-up over the Starbucks cups, those alleging a War on Christmas have been kind of quiet this year.

One of our cats, Chen, just loves our tree, he practically lives under it. The other cat, Paprika, could care less. She's too busy cowering in fear in some dark corner of the house.
