The click to read button doesn't work Kepler.:(

That's because it's a captured image, Bob. :)

BTW, my wife and I read the book in the bookstore Sunday. It's great.

Sounds like a real page turner. Maybe I can track down a copy at the local library!

Re: The Rapture is scheduled for May 21!

They prayed so hard that God changed His mind. But the apocalypse is still coming!
Debunked doomsday prognosticator Harold Camping finally answered the door of his compound last night to sheepishly acknowledge that the apocalypse was late. Harold Camping, the 89-year-old fundamentalist radio preacher who erroneously predicted that the Rapture would happen Saturday night at 6 p.m., told a reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle that he was "flabbergasted" the Rapture didn't happen. "It has been a really tough weekend," said Camping.

And how are Camping's still-earthbound followers coping? Well, anyone easily persuaded the world would end at a specific date and time—instead of the less climactic Apocalypse-In-Process we see unfolding every day—probably doesn't have much trouble coming up with a rationalization for its postponement. "Judgment Day has come and passed, but it was a spiritual judgment on the world," one believer told NPR. "There is no more salvation. Salvation is over with. The fact is we have 153 days, and on the 21st of October, the world will end." Another says we were spared because of the prayers of Camping's flock, and that God "delayed judgment so that more people could be saved, but the end is 'imminent.'"

But a rival Rapture group was less forgiving; gathered outside Camping's compound yesterday, they urged mankind not to give up on eschatology just because of that charlatan Camping. "He's in big trouble with God," said "Rapture blogger" Jackie Alnor. "It's given people who hate Christianity an excuse to hate it even more." Alnor contends that the world will end, but no one—not even Camping—knows when.

"I don't think I am going to stop listening to him," one acolyte told the Chronicle, before sighing and adding, "I don't know, I gotta listen to him on Monday, see what he says on the radio." Yes, let us withhold judgment until we listen to his broadcast, shall we? Certainly there's a perfectly rational explanation for all of this.

No! Not October 21! My birthday is the next day and I have plans!! Can he re-schedule?

It's not really a schedule, more of a guideline really. ;)

This guy is kind of a mix of Jon Lovitz' character with the "yeah, that's it, October 21st", Bullwinkle pulling rabbits out of a hat and Charlie Brown kicking footballs...maybe next time he won't be front page of every internet site and lead every news story...otherwise he'll be coming up with dates for years and we'll have 9 other whackos coming up with their own dates.

Although, it gives a new tag line for all work that is delayed "yeah, sure, let me check the calendar...based on our calculations, we'll be getting that to you October 21st {snicker}".

Or, "we had that penciled in for October 22 but with the world ending and all, we may have some revised milestones"

To be fair, October 21 was always the date he said the world was going to be destroyed. The Plan before was that the Saved would get teleported leaving the rest of us (let's be realistic) 5 months to mend our ways. Now it's all gonna happen in one walk off homer.

From everything even the guy's detractors have to say about Camping himself, he seems like one of the few of these types who isn't just in it to fleece the flock and shag every girl in the congregation. He seems to genuinely believe what he's saying, his non-profit really is non-profit, he's actually nice to people unlike most televangelists. He's sincere. Which sounds nuts... but then again something like 50% of Americans think "Jesus will return in their lifetime," 90% of people believe in angels, 35% don't believe in evolution, etc. We live in a very superstitious country.

from the article; why are houses called "compounds" when they're inhabited by crazy false prophets? He doesn't have any kind of Koresh style setup does he?

if his ol' time relgion is getting 100 mill from this end of the world stuff, i have to imagine before all this he was clearing some serious cash in his ministry... not 100 mill serious... but maybe he does have a good sized house.

But yeah, "compound" is probably being used for its cult allusions.... Koresh, Jeffs, etc.

edit: I will say that Camping doesn't appear to want to use his members for much more than self-assurance and self-worship.... message appears limited to the end of days... doesn't appear to abuse members in rather psychologically twisted ways (aside from the end of the world)... a lot of straight up cult leaders like the powers and trappings of using theology to bind up a person to act to the immediate desires of the leader... which is usually why they go to the whole concubine and para-military model... after all, what guy who thinks they can string people along doesn't want a military and a youthful harem.

It does have its appeals.
