What the hell is wrong with people?

A Michigan woman said she was denied a medication for her miscarriage by a pharmacist at a supermarket who refused to fill the prescription because of his religious beliefs, then declined to help her obtain the drug elsewhere.

The woman, Rachel Peterson, 35, of Ionia, Mich., became pregnant earlier this year, but an ultrasound at the end of June revealed that the fetus no longer had a heartbeat. She and her husband headed to a family member’s home in northern Michigan, more than three hours away, to decompress.

Her doctor prescribed her misoprostol, a drug that would make the miscarriage process happen faster and could help her avoid an invasive surgical procedure.

She explained to the pharmacist, whom she identified as Richard Kalkman, that her fetus was no longer viable and that she needed the medication to complete the miscarriage safely.

But “he didn’t believe me,” Ms. Peterson said, and told her that he “couldn’t support an abortion.”

He also refused her requests to speak to another pharmacist or to the manager, she said.

She reported the episode to a Meijer manager, and received a call from a regional director at the company, who said the company would be investigating.

But nobody from corporate contacted her, she said, so she approached the American Civil Liberties Union, which filed a complaint on Tuesday.

if you can't dispense any medication prescribed by the patient's doctor then you need to find another job.

It's worse than that.

He also refused her requests to speak to another pharmacist or to the manager, she said.

That's the procedure.

I agree find another job if you're going to be an asshat.

I know what the procedure is supposed to be, however I don't think you should even be able to refuse and refer to another pharmacist. This religious freedom stuff is bull **** when it affects your ability to actually do your job. This person should be fired.

Yeah, here's another case though where if the procedure had been followed there would not have been a problem.

I don't disagree. The ******* obviously should have had another pharmacist fill the prescription. But that doesn't change the fact that by refusing to fill the prescription and making someone else do it he's shaming the patient and projecting his b.s. religious beliefs onto her.

I don't think they should even have the right to refuse to fill a prescription even if they refer it to a different pharmacist that will. If you won't fill a prescription you should get fired.

I know someone around here who is probably giving this a standing ovation.

Since I'm an Atheist can I refuse to help anytime I see wearing a cross cause it goes against my beliefs?

I know tons of people who would applaud. They all make me sick.

You’d be scraping Republican brainmatter off the ceiling if this was a Muslim refusing to pick up someone in a cab because they had alcohol.

The cabbies here tried that, if you remember (I bet you do). The cab companies were taken to court and the cabbies were told that they could not discriminate based upon the content of a person's luggage.

It makes me wonder, and if I had time I might look it up, does MN have the same pharmacy/medical laws here that were on display in MI?

I do. It’s why I posted it :).

But I have a feeling that things have changed drastically. If it happened in say, Alabama or some other state where we don’t have a more pragmatic approach to things like this, I expect a full-on riot.

My insurance went up this year. Coinsurance went from 15 to 20 percent after deducible. It went from 10 to 15 the year before.

A-sholes. Gotta pay those shareholders.

Curious to see what happen to me this year. I usually expect the worse and it ends up being more than that.

My insurance went up. Then I got a new job and my contribution is down. None of this matters.

We should join other 1st world countries and have single payer. Then I wouldn't have to put off doctors visits while in between jobs or waiting for insurance to kick in at the new job. Having healthcare tied to employment is terrible.
