The PPACA Thread Part V: Doctor! Doctor! Give me the news!

Re: The PPACA Thread Part V: Doctor! Doctor! Give me the news!

Drew referred to "inner city," which is similar code for black people.

Right, but I don't understand why the negative connotation of being called athletic is. I've definitely used both terms before, on white players, Latinos, and probably black athletes at some point. The Twins have a lot of scrappy middle infielders and have since the days of Luis Rivas and The Piranhas.

Re: The PPACA Thread Part V: Doctor! Doctor! Give me the news!

I've never noticed that. What's the implication here?

Sorry for being dense.

The implication is that announcers, like everybody else, has subconscious and unexamined racial stereotypes which inform their perception and color their evaluation of players. We all do this from teachers ("troubled" = white; "disruptive" = black) to cops ("erratic" = white; "threatening" = black) to everybody else. When people in authority do it they unintentionally perpetuate casual racism and negative outcomes which in turn then just feed the perceptions which become self-fulfilling.

tl; dr: Thoughts convey with actions.

Right, but I don't understand why the negative connotation of being called athletic is.

The negative connotation of "athletic" is the flipside of the black superhuman myth that causes cops to shoot black men who look at them funny because it terrifies them. The crude, overtly racist version is that blacks were bred as farm animals so they're more naturally athletic. The polite, boardroom version is that blacks have natural talents whereas whites worked hard to achieve skills and so have earned everything they can do. It's a way of stripping black men of their merits by chalking them up to biology. It's the scene in 42 in the press box where a writer is saying it's unfair to compare black and white athletes because blacks have a longer tendon in the foot or something.

These are all unconscious racist attitudes which then feed conscious racist evaluations about who works harder, is more focused, has a higher growth potential, etc.

Huh... I guess I still think it's kind of a stretch. I understand the argument, I'm just not sure I totally buy it. Maybe I'll just ahve to watch for it moving forward.

Trust me, it isn't a stretch. I may be explaining it poorly, but particularly back in the '70s you could hear it on practically every sports broadcast, and you still hear it in the stands from time to time among older fans.

Another way of talking about it.

It's used in soccer too, ala "they're well organized" vs "they play with a lot of flair".

Re: The PPACA Thread Part V: Doctor! Doctor! Give me the news!

I think you're explaining it fine. But I'm just not sure I but it.

Organization and flair are stylistic and have much to do with culture. I just don't see the racism in it. Sure, the Germans are almost certainly going to be one of the most organized because that's just the way their culture is. The Latin American and South American teams tend to play with more flair. So what?

Re: The PPACA Thread Part V: Doctor! Doctor! Give me the news!

There's a subtle undercurrent of "these folks play the right way and those people don't."

Re: The PPACA Thread Part V: Doctor! Doctor! Give me the news!

You might be right. And it might be true for a vast majority of the population as well.

I just see them as two different approaches. I prefer the German style but like watching the high-flair offenses. There are enjoyable aspects to both styles.

Is she though? One point doesn't make a line.

She seems like a saint when you juxtapose her with the psychopaths in her party.

Used to be used all the time in the NFL. Elway and Montana and Marino were natural leaders and field generals. Moon and Cunningham were athletes.
