What. You don't think violation of civil rights is equivalent to a politically-motivated fishing expedition? You clearly lack Fish's vision.

I think you're both stretching. The clerk cannot compromise her faith / moral code. She cannot serve Caesar and God. Pick one.

If she waiting to play the martyr by waiting to be fired, tough poop, sister. If you're that dead set against it, then resign.

BTW is there another clerk that will issue licenses? If so, the gays should shut up and go to the other clerk. They're also playing the martyr card. And I hate people playing the victim and looking for sympathy.

The woman, Mrs. Davis, is an elected official, in charge of all who are employed in that office. She's instructed her subordinates to not issue licenses while she's out of the office. Her highest ranking employee is one Nathan Davis. Do you think he's related?

There are other counties where these people can get marriage licenses, but if this woman goes unchallenged, then it's a tacit approval by the populace of her actions. In truth, the plaintiffs should continue their actions against her and then get their licenses in the next county.

I don't get this. If it's a law you don't get to break it just because the guy sitting next to you is willing to obey it. (I know it's actually the practice; I just don't get how it can be other than saying, "throw them a bone and they won't whine.")

Yeah, and Rosa Parks should've just moved to the back of the bus, because she still would've had a seat. She was just playing the martyr, too. :rolleyes:

And you must really hate Bob then, given how often he pays the martyr card on here.

Seems like in this case, given the Constitution, she can't choose- she is the representative of the Government, and as such, can not take sides in a religion argument. Thus, as the Government representative, must give out the license.

No problem if she wants to have Faith and a moral code- but she can not factor that into her Government job if the act that she is being asked to do is legal.

Given the ability to use her religion to choose who can and can not get married is not allowed in her position. Otherwise, she should be able to not give licences to any religion she does not approve of- which are pretty numerous for Christians, in theory.

Funny how there's no outrage directed at Colin Powell, who also used a private email address when he was SecState.

The only martyrdom here is Ms. (Mrs.?) Davis'. Telling these couples to go to the next county over because of "religious objections" when she is a public servant and SCOTUS has established its ruling is discrimination, end of story. As I understand it, she has told her subordinates not to issue licenses to anyone (gay or straight), in what she thinks is a crafty way to avoid discrimination claims. Regardless, this is a backdoor boycott of issuing licenses to same-sex couples, and a failure of her public duties according to the law.

True. And if she doesn't follow the law, she should excuse herself. There are other avenues to protest.
