Re: The Power of the SCOTUS Part VII - The Bedrock of the Republic!

Watching FOX right now.

Scalia flipped today from yesterday. So did Roberts.

On Fox Roberts flipped. Scalia is consistent.

Whatever.
Oh and this is a win for conservatives. Because personal freedoms are what they are all about.

Re: The Power of the SCOTUS Part VII - The Bedrock of the Republic!

Holy crap. I had no idea that Baker v. Nelson was precedent set on a Minnesota law banning gay marriage. Interesting.

What do you mean? That Roberts was originally for it?

The logic that Scalia and Roberts used for Obamacare they reversed on Gay marriage. That's what I'm saying. Yesterday words mattered to Scalia. Today they didn't. Yesterday intent mattered to Roberts, today it didn't. It's an illustration of how partisan the Court really is.

Protestant propaganda. :)

No doubt. Fear of Popery and such. :)

I highly recommend the show if you haven't seen it. The religious argumentation is interesting, and the acting is outstanding.

And if MLK were alive he'd be a Republican.

But it's a good sign; they know it's over and done with. Whatever they need to tell themselves.

The five stages of the political 180:

1. That's laughable.
2. That's monstrous!
3. It's too soon.
4. I was for it all along.
5. It was my idea.

3. It's too soon.
4. I was for it all along.

Given the South in MLK's time, I doubt he espoused the principles of the Democratic party. Jackie Robinson was a Republican.

Or the reverse in the case of the Iraq war.

Your schtick of ignoring the southern strategy and the resulting realignment of the parties is getting old.

He died in 1968. The Democratic party in the South in 68 was pro segregation. Nixon desegregated the South.

Today? Who knows? Was MLK pro life? What would his stance be on SSM? We can wish all we want, but we're guessing.

Re: The Power of the SCOTUS Part VII - The Bedrock of the Republic!

The Democratic party in the South in 68 was pro segregation.

The Democratic party in the South in 68 was the Republican party in the south today. SSDP.

Ike, JFK and LBJ desegregated the south. Nixon and Reagan used white southern anger to flip the Dixiecrats to the GOP.

Re: The Power of the SCOTUS Part VII - The Bedrock of the Republic!

The Constitution and its amendments are collectively a living, breathing document open to interpretation. If they weren't, only white, male, Protestant, property owners (the definition of "men" held by most of the Framers) would have voting rights today, amongst many other differences.

Times change, public opinions and attitudes change, and you either adapt or die off. Today it's gay rights, tomorrow it'll be something else.

Robots. I just don't trust those toasters!

The southern democratic party of 1968 is the bread and butter of today's GOP. There's no chance in hell MLK would be a republican today.

You're right, but I'm guessing most of us here that are conservative don't really want the GOP we have today. I know I don't.
