The Potsdam Bears deserve their own thread....

Some very interesting and positive comments about Bears hockey have been posted recently, especially after winning the Times Argus tourney.
Potsdam's record could be better for a few bounces here and there, "where are you Hockey Gods?".
Big month for the Bears coming up, hosting Neumann for a pair this weekend, a road trip to Elmira on the 15th to face off against a very familiar face, and right back into SUNYAC play from then on out.
This could turn out to be a one of the best seasons in recent years for the Bears.
Perhaps some noise in the post season? Lets hope so, at least from this fans perspective.

Re: The Potsdam Bears deserve their own thread....

I agree, the Potsdam Bears deserve their own thread  - BUT - do they have any fans to support it. :(

Potsdam - under several different coaches - has rised to the occasion many times, but seldom have been able to string them together.

Is Potsdam's success the result of their opponents underestimating them (similar to this), or their ability to kick-it-up-a-notch when they feel they have nothing to lose (or both)?

Re: The Potsdam Bears deserve their own thread....

I can agree the fans of the program are few, however with the recent success hopefully more will come along. Its a tough market when Clarkson and St.Lawrence are D-1 in your backyard.
Aaron Saul and Darcy Pettie did a tremendous job with the recenting recruiting. I believe the current coaching staff are continuing that job of recruiting.
Potsdam has some been hanging in with some great competition lately and winning a few of those. I think the program is headed in the right direction.

Re: The Potsdam Bears deserve their own thread....

We at Norwich were very impressed with the coach and the way the team represented their school. On the ice they play a good brand of hockey and never give up, what else can you ask for.

Re: The Potsdam Bears deserve their own thread....

Going in the right direction they are - their best overall performance (and first time over .500) at this point in the season since 2001.

Jan. 8, 2009 - 3- 8- 3 / 2- 4- 2
Jan. 5, 2008 - 6- 7- 3 / 4- 3- 2
Jan. 9, 2007 - 5-10- 0 / 3- 4- 0
Jan. 3, 2006 - 3- 8- 4 / 2- 4- 1
Jan. 8, 2005 - 5- 9- 1 / 2- 5- 0
Jan. 9, 2004 - 6- 7- 1 / 4- 3- 0
Jan. 7, 2003 - 7- 7- 2 / 2- 4- 1
Jan. 12, 2002 - 7- 9- 0 / 2- 5- 0
Jan. 6, 2001 - 10- 3- 2 / 4- 1- 2

Thanks for the kind words, these kids enjoyed the tournament for obvious reasons.
It should provide to be a valuable experience with such good competition.

Re: The Potsdam Bears deserve their own thread....

Well, they've proven they can play with anyone anywhere and can come back from third period deficits... I wouldn't want to play them right now. We'll see how they are fairing in a month when the Cards make the trip west.

Re: The Potsdam Bears deserve their own thread....

I have said from day 1 of this season that Potsdam is a darkhorse and shouldn't be taken lightly. As far as fans go it seems to be all about who they are playing it seems as though that there they have eclipsed 800 in three games two being SUNYAC rivals Oswego and Brockport and the third being tiny Canton.

Perhaps, I should have been more specific, as they certainly have a significant fan base, including the large numbers who make the nearly 200 mile roundtrip when they play in Plattsburgh. My concern, is do they have enough supporters on USCHO to support a dedicated thread - I hope so, the more the merrier :)

For the time being, please refer to me as a Nation of One. :D

In addition to the PITA rivalry that Potsdam has on Plattsburgh (Historical Record: Plattsburgh has 73 wins - 14 losses - 6 ties), I lived in Potsdam from late 1994 to late 1997 while working as a RadioShack manager, and enjoyed many Potsdam games.

That's because you saw Potsdam during one of their best stretches ever and arguably perhaps their best player of all time -- Steve Naughton.

Re: The Potsdam Bears deserve their own thread....

I grew up in Potsdam and attended college there as well. I know from experience I have always viewed Plattsburgh as a rivalry.
Granted in hockey Platty vs Oswego is different, I am not sure Plattsburgh views Potsdam as another rival.
Thoughts?
I will take Steve Naughton with 7 please.....

Certainly not the rivalry as with Oswego, but as fellow SUNYAC schools and travel partners and also by virtue of their relatively close proximity - and subsequent high than average opposition fan attendance, a "rivalry atmosphere" generally prevails at the games (and I won't mention the timing of many of those Potsdam wins/ties).

Comparision: Plattsburgh is 65-29-5 vs Oswego and 73-14-6 vs Potsdam - A lot closer than many would think.
