Yep, and I know this is the guys forum, but our women's program lost an assistant as well. That's what happens when you don't pay your assistants like other programs do, not to mention having the worst facilities in our respective leagues (BIG Ten & WCHA). And yet, somehow, some on here debate me when I say our athletic department treats hockey as an afterthought.

not exactly disagreeing with you but something else needs to be mentioned.

I don't think that we can assume losing these two assistant coaches was just about money. Joe Exter previously worked with Danton Cole and the two are friends. Strobel is a Wisconsin grad and made no secret that his "dream job" was to coach at his alma mater. And going back even farther to Brett Larson it was a chance to return to a place his wife was much happier. I suspect that each got a raise in his new position but to say it was only about the money is wrong.

And another way to look at things is "gee, we seem to hire a lot of assistants who are sought after by other programs. Must be doing something right."

Also, our men's hockey facilities are on par with just about anywhere in the country. Definitely agree on the women's side.

Have to disagree there. When you can't practice for 2/3rds of the season on your own ice because of basketball and other events going on, that's not on par. When you get kicked out of your own building and shipped to Nationwide in favor of wrestling in your own building, that's not on par. When there are 7k fans in your own building and it still feels empty, that's not on par.

Hopefully this winter athletic pavillion comes to fruition and we can get a new arena with all the bells and whistles that go with it. Our kids proved last season they belong on the big stage, it's time we had the facilities to match.

Agree with this. Nothing "on par" about the Schott when our team almost never gets to practice there and the game atmosphere sucks because the arena is only 25% full for most games. Anyone who thinks the Schott is "on par" with other arenas in the BIG Ten needs to get to a game at some of the other arenas in the league.

The fact that I mentioned facilities and the athletic department's continued treatment of hockey as an afterthought is a clear indication that I was not implying that it was only about money. I wholeheartedly agree with you that it wasn't just money. I think some coaches prefer to be at schools where hockey is more of a priority, as opposed to how it is treated here at tOSU.

The fact that we have a weaker fanbase that doesn't fill up the arena compared to the other schools in the conference has nothing to do with the quality of the facility. Also, sharing the facility with other sports is not a problem that's unique to Ohio State. Wisconsin, the school in question, does as well. Have you actually been behind the scenes at the Schott and seen the facilities beyond the rink itself? They're top notch.

I have been behind the scenes at the Schott a couple times and yes, the facilities beyond the rink are nice, but I doubt they are any better than any other hockey program in the BIG Ten. In regard to our "weak" fan base, there was a time when the seats in the upper deck were needed and there wasn't a curtain up there for every home game. You correctly cite Wisconsin as another school that shares its facility. The difference is they fill their building and the atmosphere there is much better than the Schott. Having a sheet of ice in the Schott seemed like a good idea at first, but in hindsight, a hockey-only facility should have been built then. The Schott is actually hurting the program more than it is helping at this point.

I've been through all the Big Ten rinks from to bottom.
The facilities at the Schott are better than at Munn and Yost. Penn State & Notre Dame are the top and the facilities and dressing rooms and training and medical areas are comparable to Minnesota and Wisconsin. That being said, a building similar to Penn State (it has 2 sheets) would do wonders for OSU and Columbus hockey in general.

To get a true home ice advantage we need a hockey only building. We get 7000 fans in the schott and it seems like no one is in the place. If we can get a smaller arena it will be full or at least 3/4 full every night. We need a place that teams fear coming into like Yost and Maurcci.

I'm all for a hockey-only arena. I'm just saying I don't think our facilities had anything to do with Strobel going back to Wisconsin.

My concern is more immediate than getting new facilities, with two coaches bailing in the off season are we going to lose any recruits because of it?

With our head coach staying put and with so many key positions to fill I'd be surprised if we did. We can offer quite a lot of playing time to an incoming freshman this year.

Strobel played at Wisconsin and jumped at the chance to return home. Exter is good friends with Danton Cole and went to MSU partly because of that and partly because he wants to continue moving upward. He's been at OSU for four years - time to go learn from someone else. I wish the timing was better than losing both of them in the same offseason. Don't worry about this year's recruits leaving since most of them are enrolled in classes and would now have to sit out a year if they transfer.

Let's look at the bright side - I think JB Bittner will be as good a recruiter for hockey as Luke Fickell was for football, and I don't think JB will jump ship for another school. And if he gets the team to play with the same intensity that he did I will be very happy.

JB is probably the only person I can think of that considers Ohio State his dream coaching job. I would not be surprised if he aspires to be head coach someday. Nothing like an alumni to bring a true passion to coaching at their Alma Matter.

new associate head coach is Steve Miller from Air Force.....

Most recently, Miller served as the director of hockey at Air Force the last two seasons. In 2017 the squad won the Atlantic Hockey Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals, falling to Harvard, 3-2.

A winner of the prestigious AHCA Terry Flanagan Award, Miller helped coach Providence to its first NCAA title and was on staff for two NCAA titles with Denver. During his 19 and a half years with the Pioneers, Miller worked with all aspects of the team, with a focus on the defense. He recruited two defensemen who went on to win the Hobey Baker Memorial Award – Matt Carle in 2006 and Will Butcher in 2017.
