Well, I guess this means Anchorage 2026 won't be happening...

Re: The official thread of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Boston

Be careful what you wish for... You just might get it ;)

It's amazing that there are that many cities bidding... They can't give away the bid for the 2022 Winter games....

Like anyone in Boston actually wants this. Mayor Walsh could sew up reelection for life right now by vowing to move the games to Belfast if Boston wins.

Re: The official thread of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Boston

The USOC was afraid that if they didn't acknowledge the awesome and majesty of Boston then certain people would whine about them on a message board. :p

Yeah....

Actually, Boston put together a good bid focusing on the colleges in the area that already have most of the facilities needed. Great day for BU and Harvard.

Buy not MIT? WHY DO YOU HATE THE BEAVERS?

What facilities does BU have, or Harvard for that matter that would work for the Olympics? Dorms? I doubt many if any of the sports venues would be suitable.

Harvard Stadium, Agganis Arena. Housing at those schools, plus UMass-Boston (proposed Olympic Village)

Take it up with the USOC :p

BC's Conte Forum was included, but nothing at Northeastern either :p

Re: The official thread of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Boston

I want the marathon run through the North End. I hope they get lost.

Re: The official thread of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Boston

I'm very excited about this. I know we won't get it because people here have already formed groups to rally against it.

I guarantee the marathon course would be the same as the normal Boston marathon. Too much history there.

Re: The official thread of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Boston

Who will light the flame? I'm betting on Eruzione and/or Craig. Possibly Larry Bird (he did win gold in '92).

No way it's a winter Olympic athlete. All the more so sincethe 1980 hockey team lit the flame in Salt Lake.

Bird is a possibility.

I'm sure it will be suggested. But it needs an exemption from the normal rules since it doesn't end where it begins (and I believe that on the whole it is slightly downhill) and it would be a logistical nightmare if anything else substantial is going on in the city. And some of the things that the Boston Marathon is very good at (like accommodating thousands of runners) don't apply here.

The Boston Globe already published a piece opposing it. And we already know how much the rest of the country just loves Boston.

I'm trying to convince locals that this will be a boon for their personal finances: rent out their apartment/house for three weeks for an incredible amount and go on vacation.

Edit: Here is a USA Today piece with 9 reasons NOT to have the games in Boston.

Storrow Drive is the single most terrifying road in North America. I will not be debated on this.
