Ah. I knew it was one of those eastern ones; for some reason Merrimack was popping into my head. One of these days, I'll get all of these switches straight. If anything, that makes them look even more snooty. And coming from someone like me, that's saying something. :eek:

Nobody got screwed. The beauty thing about college hockey is that it is by far the most difficult NCAA post season to get into and lets hope it stays that way. It also really allows teams that may be peaking at the right time have a shot at a national title. If you want to guarantee getting in, win your friggin tournament and quit complaining.

How about we go to a 6-team NCAA tournament: nothing but conference tourney winners. Byes go to the two leagues repesented by the most recent national champions (in the case of this year: ECAC and Hockey East).

Listen, at-large bids are necessary, honestly.

because of the nature of out-of-conference play, no two teams have the exact same schedule. That needs to be controlled for.

The fact that the weighting factors they use for bonus points and to calculate the RPI are arbitrary, a small tweak here or there would have made the difference. To be 11th in KRACH and not to make the field is a major problem with the present selection criteria. But if you want to really feel bad then go to:

They show that Bowling Green 'in fact' earned the 11th NCAA seed (100% probability) while Yale is on the outside at 18th.

These guys (contact@playoffstatus.com) know that their site gives incorrect results yet they have failed to correct it. :eek:

Stauber's list seems to show the effect of "bad losses". Losing to teams below the TUC line only hurt the RPI. Now these loses could hurt in comparisons against these teams.

I'm not quite sure I follow.
The only 3 current comparisons are: QWB adjusted RPI, record vs. common opponents, and head-to-head.
So, losing to teams below the (now fictitious) TUC line only affects your QWB adjusted RPI, and possibly your common opponents comparison against select teams.

It could (and I think should) be argued that the effect is now magnified with the QWB adjustment to the RPI, but I don't see how it changes these losses to affecting the number of comparisons won against those teams. Maybe for teams at the very low end of the PWR, but practically speaking those comparisons don't matter anyway.

What it shows to me is the change in how important RPI is. The PWR is now basically just QWB adjusted RPI. If you line the two up, they are identical except for 3 instances where teams right next to each other in the ranking flipped (Yale & QU @ 13/14, MI & Vermont @ 19/20, Union & UNH @ 28/29).
That begs the question of what purpose the PWR really serves. At least this year, we could have scrapped the PWR and just used QWB adjusted RPI to select the field, and there really wouldn't have been any difference.

That's what I get for not living in Lowell anymore and having to rely on someone else's account of the article's location. (Not that I'd even look at the Sun if I still lived in Lowell anyway.)

Like I said, that entire paper is an embarrassment. It's been beyond terrible for the whole 20 years I've been exposed to it. I'm amazed it still gets published, to be honest.

This is outrageous. Of course Lowell got screwed. Lowell and RMU should leave the NCAA and form a new league, one where every team makes the tournament. Also, they can play exclusively outdoor games and end every game in a shootout, so more fans would show up, and they'd have more revenue than the other schools. Then once the other schools realize the new revenue potential, they too would the NCAA, and no team would ever be screwed again.

Alaska (Fairbanks) got screwed - by its administration. 7-0-1 in its last eight games, but no playoffs due to NCAA sanctions. Way to mind the store.
