Re: The Official Maine 2009 season thread:The Revenge of TIMMAY!!!

They WERE overrated at #4,no doubt in my mind. They can skate and have solid 'tending, but this is the typical collection of ham-handed goons Cornell trots out every year, and nothing to get all excited about.

BTW,anybody watch that CU/UNH travesty yesterday?UNH laid down like a bunch of little girls,as they always seem to do when I'm rooting for them in an OOC game. That team desperately needs to grow a set,FCS.They played afraid for the last 40 minutes or so...That "effort" was an embarrassment to Hockey East.
UNH,now that is a team that is OVER-RATED,not now in the polls...but listening to Melrose you would think they are signed/sealed and delivered to the Frozen 4...........lets hope Maine give's them a thumping up at the Alfond on Feb.5/6...........

The exhibition game with UNB will be made up on either the 19th or 20th of January. A rare mid-week game.

at least it's a week where they only had one game scheduled on the weekend, and another exhibition game at that...

UNB wanted this game to be played. According to Whitehead, their coach loves the atmosphere at the Alfond. Apparently, they don't draw fans in those numbers at home. This UNB team is very good. Will be a good test for Maine.

Re: The Official Maine 2009 season thread:The Revenge of TIMMAY!!!

Someone on the BC/BU Fenway thread mentioned they though NU had by far the best section in the Northeast (Because that's what we talk about on BU/BC threads) and I remembered I forgot to stop by and say on my first visit to Alfond for the BU game earlier this year I became convinced that spot belonged to Maine.

Also wanted to say the overall atmosphere was incredible. I know Alfond is probably the kind of rink a lot of people want to see replaced with some modern type thinger to promote the program but I loved it and hope it stays there as long as possible (I actually liked the put-together feeling some BU fans had told be was ugly). It was also the first hockey east arena I've left and had somebody kindly ask me where I was from and wish me a safe ride home.

Truly, Black Bears... A+ stuff up there, we should all model ourselves after most of what you do.

That being said... fire Timmay!

You should have seen it 20 years ago, before the renovation.

Oh, and fire Jack! :p

Oh, and fire Jack! :p

he should have been there 6 years ago, when it was rocking

and Jack actually coaches... gets recruits to show up, works the refs to his advantage and knows how to get talented players not to leave ultra, mega early.
(I wonder if you ever knew a coach who did any of that stuff... or even made sure his socks were laundered appropriately)

Gardiner MacDougall does love bringing the Varsity Reds to Alfond ... there is no atmosphere like that (or similar Div I rinks) anywhere in the CIS. UNB has the second best attendance in the CIS, and yet they only average 2500 fans in their 3700 seat rink. However, they will come close to filling it in for a big game, playoff game, or when a NCAA team is visiting. No one in the CIS has a band in the stands ... it is just not a Canadian thing.

University sport is just not a "big deal" in Canada. There's little TV coverage, no TV money, and Canadians, like their stereotypical image, don't usually show a lot of passion at CIS hockey games. Now if we're talking Major Junior, and more importantly the World Juniors, than Canada gets kinda bonkers.

After saying that, the Varsity Reds are a pretty big deal in Fredericton and the local area. They don't compete for fans in their market with a Major Junior or minor pro team (although back in the 80's and 90's they shared their building with the AHL's Fredericton Express and later the Fredericton Canadiens). They actually get kids now asking them for autographs. The University Cup (for the CIS championship) they won back in March and display prominently (at times) is a fairly big deal. If Fredericton wasn't such a white-collar government/university town you'd probably see a lot more passion in the stands, but hey, it is a great place to live and fairly immune to big swings in the economy.

Re: The Official Maine 2009 season thread:The Revenge of TIMMAY!!!

Thanks for the info on UNB, Freddy.

You're welcome. What I meant to add is that the UNB hockey program takes 'exhibition" games against NCAA opponents pretty seriously, as they only get a few opportunities a year. There's a lot of pride on the line for them. In the national media CIS hockey is ignored in Canada - the focus is the NHL and then the CHL (Major Junior), and after that the NCAA. Last year SportsNet East started carrying NESN's broadcasts of the Bean Pot and Friday night Hockey East games - but no CIS games.

Part of the problem is the centre of the Canadian media universe is Toronto, and there are no nationally competitive (i.e. Top 10) CIS hockey teams in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). So with no exposure, which they could help develop, it is cheaper for them to carry the feed of a NESN NCAA broadcast as opposed to producing their own CIS games of the week. At least in the Maritimes some UNB games are show provincially on Rogers TV, and in Nova Scotia and PEI Eastlink Cable does some AUS conference hockey games.

2. do you know any good newfie jokes?

I got one... This talented Newfie played hockey at Maine for more than one season..... just kidding.

Touche

with the exception of Guerin, you are correct, but I did knot know that Shawn asked you to do away team laundry too.

That's because he didn't.

Laundry was done by Pic and Jonesy over in the gym.

Curious as to what the layoff will do to Maine. Merrimack is pretty good and Maine can't afford a letdown

I'm going to be in the area, and I can't wait to see them, at least on tv, for the first time this year. Edit: this season. I guess it will be everybody's first time this year.

I don't think the layoff will hurt them at all. I think it helps by way of healing up some injuries etc. They will spank the Mack Saturday. Maybe I haven't had enough coffee this morning but I am going to make a New Years prognostication. Maine finishes 2nd in HE.

I have to agree that this is very possible. Maine is hands down playing the best hockey in the league right now. The power play is gorgeous. The only way I see Maine not continuing its current level of play is if we run into some inconsistent goaltending. Turning out to be a great year in Orono.

As for Friday's game, I still don't think this is an easy win. Merrimack is a tough team and I hope our guys don't underestimate them. 5-3 Maine.
