The Official 2013 Oswego State Post/Pre-Season Thread - "Love All, Serve All"...

Re: The Official 2013 Oswego State Post/Pre-Season Thread - "Love All, Serve All"...

Re: The Official 2013 Oswego State Post/Pre-Season Thread - "Love All, Serve All"...

So basically after a long series of near misses, finally a SUNYAC player will be playing in the NHL. I have a lot of pride for the fact that he's from Oswego State. Wouldn't have it any other way.

A Plattsburgh goalie sat on the bench as a backup with the Rangers. So, technically, he beat Selleck.

But, is there anyone else out there who got into an NHL game?

This is awesome! Congrats to Eric Selleck :) ... I wish I would have opted for that NHL Center Ice package, darn it. Hopefully he'll be up for more than one game. The following game is against the Rangers and I get the MSG Network! Would love to see him and Stu Bickel square off.

Carolina has been asked to put fresh batteries in the smoke alarms in the visitors locker room. (that's an "in" joke) ;)

still wish he finished his four years at Oswego, but good for him. I'll watch an NHL game for once to see how he does.

He was one of the extremely rare cases where he'd gain nothing from staying additional years (from a hockey standpoint). He was dominating on the ice, physically he was way too mature for the league, and he knew he'd make his money with his physical play in the pros. A no brainer to leave rather than risk injury continuing to play in D-III.

Obviously, drafted and playing are two different things. Selleck wasn't drafted, but he did sign a two-way contract with Florida, as opposed to signing a minor league contract like most undrafted players do.

Potsdam had a player drafted (Howie Vandermast with the Islanders) but never played. On the flipside, Chris Lee did not get drafted, but did play exhibiton games for the Islanders and Penguins (and was called up once by Pittsburgh during the regular season, but never suited up).
Hey Russ didnt Chuck Callahan get a shot at a try out? played vs him and with him as a kid.

Chris Panek was also drafted by the LA Kings the same year as the guy from Potsdam but never played for them. Joey Ferras was in Hartford's camp after he graduated and Rick Strack made it to the Rangers bench but never played. Jacques Lemaire coached in the NHL winning a cup with the devils after starting his American coaching career as a assistant under Herb Hammond at Plattsburgh so there has been some SUNYAC flavor in the NHL but spread out over time. I am watching the game now and they have mentioned Selleck a few times and even referenced the fact that Jerry Sinfield went to Oswego. Just a little tid bit about this Selleck from Oswego is being coached by Kevin Dineen who's brother played at Plattsburgh State in the 90's.

Way cool! Fox Sports Florida had an on-screen quiz during the game about "which of these people didn't go to SUNY Oswego?"- Seinfeld, Biden, Roker, Selleck! Selleck has been playing regular shifts.

Re: The Official 2013 Oswego State Post/Pre-Season Thread - "Love All, Serve All"...

Plattsburgh's Rick Strack was signed right after the FF in 1981 by the Rangers and finished up that season with Springfield in the AHL. He was called up to the Rangers in '82 by Herb Brooks. DIdn't get in as the Rangers were stacked with goalies(Davidson, Soetaert, Weeks, Baker, etc). He was sent to Tulsa in the CHL and finished his career there after the Rangers took John VanBiesbrouck in the draft. We also had a guy named Dennie Poulin who was signed by the Bruins and played several exhibition games before being sent to Baltimore. He could fight AND score but hated the coaches and the attitudes of guys who had been sent down from the NHL so he quit.

Chris Panek was drafted in the NHL Supplemental Draft by L.A. and played on the top farm club in Springfield. Too bad Gretzky was still hand-picking the team and brought in some of his older buddies or Panek would've made it. Joey Ferras played for Adirondack Red Wings when they were loaded and contributed some big goals but was just too small.
Great job by Selleck, all I can say is he had better win his fights or he won't be around long !! That's just the way it goes in the show.

Re: The Official 2013 Oswego State Post/Pre-Season Thread - "Love All, Serve All"...

Selleck played a solid game, but picked a fight with 3 minutes left. He took a solid uppercut, went down, and had to be helped to the locker room. Also got a penalty for it and Carolina scored, ruining the shutout. But a Panthers win at 4-1.

Missed his fight by a matter of minutes but I've been flipping over to his game while watching the Sabres game... not sure if he won it or not but nice to see that in his first game he's not afraid to drop his gloves and try to prove that he can, and wants to play there for a while!

Yeah, to be fair, Westgarth is like 6'6" 250. Selleck is obviously trying to do what he can to stick!

Didn't he do the same thing in his first AHL game with Rochester? Lost that one too.

"Welcome to the NHL, son."

Nope we won't this is from NHL's website

Selleck faces hearing for incident vs. Hurricanes
Florida Panthers forward Eric Selleck faces a hearing with the Department of Player Safety on Wednesday afternoon.

The following grounds for potential supplemental discipline are being considered: leaving the players' bench on a legal line change for the purpose of starting or joining an altercation (Rule 70.2). The incident occurred at the 17:02 mark of the third period during a game Tuesday night against the Carolina Hurricanes at PNC Arena.

In addition, Selleck was assessed a two-minute minor for instigating plus a five-minute major for fighting and game misconduct under Rule 46.12 (Instigator in Final Five Minutes of Regulation Time [or Anytime in Overtime]) and has received an automatic one-game suspension.

So he already has a 1 game suspension and I believe I saw Florida recalled Quinton Howden so if there is a longer suspension that may mean he gets sent down.
