The Official 2013 Oswego State Post/Pre-Season Thread - "Love All, Serve All"...

Re: The Official 2013 Oswego State Post/Pre-Season Thread - "Love All, Serve All"...

I'm sure the Lakers will have a representative team this year. I look at it this way.....if I am a talented junior player from Ontario and D1 is not happening for me, I'm signing on with Oswego before all others. The Coach is a good guy by all accounts, the best facility in the league and a great atmosphere to play in. By contrast, some other perennial powers don't have all those things going for them.

Plattsburgh only recruits a "certain type" of player and passes on a lot of good ones. Over the years there have been countless guys who had a hard time deciding between Oswego and Plattsburgh. Ryan Scott, Craig Neilson and Justin Fox come to mind. I also think Digby has become an excellent recruiter as is Moffat at Plattsburgh.

Those Canadian scholarships helped, too.

A bunch yes, but 7 Americans standsout big time for a team thats only had 9 total the past 4 seasons. I know OSU lost at least one to another SUNYAC school. Its not a question of who they have but who they COULD have had. When you are use to getting all 5-star recruits and now you are getting mostly 3s and 4s with only a couple 5-stars it will put pressure on Gosek to get the most out of his kids.

Check out the first goal! Not sure he will be doing that at the next level but we can hope!

Nice Clip of this young man. Hoefully his skills will carry over could be the next Bomber McFall from years past.

Re: The Official 2013 Oswego State Post/Pre-Season Thread - "Love All, Serve All"...

In as much as we are still in the summer months, many of us are excited about the upcoming hockey season this fall. We are all aware of the many recruits coming in this season. Not unlike other years.
I have been reading posts from one particular PSU fan that is taking great delight in the fact that the lakers will have a down season because of a young team. Let me be the first to say who can predict the outcome of a hockey player's four year career?
many of us did not expect Paul Rodrigous to become the great player that he was. With great coaching and recruiting you throw the dice and you work hard towards a successful year.
This year we celebrate our 50th year for Oswego Lakers Hockey .
WIN or Lose we will have a successful year at oswego. Come to the Campus Center for any game to see the fan base. For that matter come to any away game to see the Oswego fans .
We all look forward to another great year of Hockey

Many of who didn't expect Rodder to be a great player? He averaged about a point and a half a game in the OJHL including back to back 90 plus point seasons. I fully expected him to be a great player as I did most of the recruits they brought in that year. I don't think many really were surprised to see that team rattle off four straight final four appearances, the only thing that surprised some was the fact that they couldn't seal the deal at least once. This incoming group will likely need to win a lot of close games like most teams have to do. If they are able to get there, they will probably be more prepared to win post season games than the last crop was, getting to that point will be their problem.

Thank you for understanding. I dont I ever said Oswego will be horrible. The issue is people of the new Laker tradition dont remember the years when it was an accomplishment to win the SUNYAC, not an expectation. Its not about Oswego being young, its the players they can only get now do to the loss of FA (which having already 7 American new recruits is a big eye popper). As Laker28 alluded to, these incoming FR (for the most part) are not your high end Jr 5-Star recruits. Eddie will have to take 3 & 4-star recruits and make them 5-stars. Can he? Probably. But these Laker teams will be built more on hard work then pure talent. Gone are the years where Oswego was a few games over .500 team. This team, fans, school have come to expect greatness where winning the SUNYAC is not a big accomplishment, this team, school, fans expect Championships...The NCAA kind. It was expected to see Oswego in first place come March. Will they be last in the SUNYAC? I dont think ANYONE has said that. The issue is will your average Laker fan A. Understand WHY Oswego is not fighting for a SUNYAC title in March? and B. How long before they call for Goseks head? Im not so sure on either one. We saw first hand at Plattsburgh what the loss of FA does. For those of us who understood it, we just waited it out. Hooefully Laker fans do the same as Im sure they will. People are construding the comments as Oswego will become the next Morrisville, which is 100% not true. History, facility, school, support ect will keep Oswego afloat in the hardest of times. But thinking you will see the offensive firepower Laker fans have been acustomed to seeing for seemingly the past decade or so will probably not happen.

Re: The Official 2013 Oswego State Post/Pre-Season Thread - "Love All, Serve All"...

My point was not that Paul was not expected to be a great player and contributor to Laker hockey, but first team All American and voted the best player in the country? Thisis all semantics about how good a player becomes. If coach Gosek was lucky enough to recruit as you say a 4 or 5 player there is no guarantee that that player becomes great.
You state that Plattsburgh has not got the breaks in recruiting because of the FA? Well I have to say I guess you really have not been watching your team play hockey the last few years. Plattsburgh has had sensational hockey players , maybe not their typical offensive players, but great defense, especially at the net.
Let's see how this season unfolds before we make all these educated predictions.

Check 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 season. Ive seen my team play the past 25, and understand the dynamics of DIII pretty well thanks. Those were the years Plattsburgh was unable to hand out FA packages much like (as been reported) Oswego is unable to do. Its pretty clear when Plattsburgh lost their FA and picked it back up again.

Why would we wait till the season is over to make predictions? Do you play the lottery after its been shown on the 11 O'clock news? A lot of us have been around the block long enough to pick out decent recruits, sorry. There are more times when recruits pan out to be those All American type players then those who flop at the DIII level.

Re: The Official 2013 Oswego State Post/Pre-Season Thread - "Love All, Serve All"...

The success of the past four years has created high expectations - nothing wrong with that IMHO...using the old financial aid package as the only reason top recruits came to Oz - uh, no not really...is that the reason we have more incoming players from the "lower 48"? - You would have to ask the ones that "got away" to know for sure.

Is it possible this crop of American born players want to come and play at Oz because of the recognition and success of the previous four years - and that the school wasn't on the radar of those players before? Is it possible that the 4 star and 5 star system isn't the only way to judge the potential of an incoming class?

Don't get me wrong - I love to follow the summer banter, so keep it up...it's an entertaining buildup to the coming season - none of us will know if it really meant anything until March, anyway.....

Was it the only reason? No but it was clearly stated by a few players (especially transfers) that the FA package was a MAJOR factor. In fact one transfer said it was the deciding factor. Talk around and hear what they tell their friends. And I have heard from one of the ones who "got away", hense the statement.

Comical LEL haha. So you're telling me Gosek woke up last season and this spring and said "hmmm Im going to change my way of recruiting and the type of players I get." and the loss of FA had nothing to do with it? Keep smoking that pipe dream lol Im sure they do want to come to Oz, now that they dont have to compete with the larger Canadian pool of hockey players.

You must share a room with laker55 with your predictions AFTER the season is over.

I defer to your sources as I have no direct knowledge - I was just asking questions...so I should not be surprised they got answered...

I enjoy watching college hockey...probably not as many games as you and I don't pretend to know more about the game - I'm just a fan...an Oswego fan first, but also a fan of Coach Emery and his body of work at Plattsburgh...I don't make predictions...no need to take the conversation down a few pegs...:D

Twitter post today - RJ Berra leaving Oz after 2 yrs, transferring to Marian University...must be a helluva financial package...

Like I said LEL this isnt a bash on Oswego, thier incoming players, returning or coaching staff. As a hockey fan, much like yourself, you appreciate solid programs like Oswego. Rival or not.

Bob had to change his recruiting when the FA packages went away. Plattsburgh lost a lot of players those seasons. Even now the package, while at least some, is still not a top 5 FA package. Its forced Bob (and Moff) to go after different players in different regions. Yes Plattsburgh still made the SUNYAC Championship game (as could Oswego) but as you said there are high expectations now at Oswego, much like Plattsburgh in the late 90s early 2000s. When, Plattsburgh who has an average of .740 winning %, goes from .790 to .581, .607, .609 the next three back up to .833 and .893% it doesnt take rocket science to see where the loss of FA happened and picked back up. And I know how you say that FA isnt a big deal when you have the facility, support, and winning ways. In 2004-2005 Plattsburgh was just three years removed from a National Title, had a Top 3-5 rink, Top 2-5 in attendance, won the league title 6 out of 7, Final Four 5 out of 7 years..,point is everything Oswego "has" going for them Plattsburgh had too and they went from Top of the SUNY to mid pack. Does it guarantee Oswego will do the same? No. Emery wasnt told about the loss of FA till late into the recruiting season, it seemed as tho Oswego gave Gosek more time. American Jr systems have gotten better also. Could Gosek pull off the next Miracle on Ice? Sure. But I would not be surprised to see this team come close to the total number of losses the past three Laker season have had combined. Hopefully the Admin can work things out and give some back much like they have done in Plattsburgh.

Re: The Official 2013 Oswego State Post/Pre-Season Thread - "Love All, Serve All"...

I could look it up, but you seem to know. What are the real FA $ for both schools. Is FA package thousands of $ difference or hundreds? What does it cost for out of state/ foreign student at Oswego? Same for Plattsburgh? Thanks

I know it was a few thousand as of last year. Ask Norm to pull it up. Hes done so many times, but it was still a pretty big margin. But now with zero FA grant Oswegos cost of tuition just went up, big time for Non-Americans. Thus you see 7 Americans on their roster which as I said earlier is almost as many as the past 4 to 5 years combined.

Only New York State students entering STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) are eligible for consideration, with priority given to high achieving students with significant financial need.

Co-op Scholarship
Freshmen entering SUNY Oswego in Fall 2013 who have a desire to participate in our eligible co-op opportunities can apply for one of fifteen $24,000 ($6,000 annually) Co-op Scholarships available through our partnership with WACE (World Association for Cooperative Education).
